Exploring the digital divide: The use of digital tools in Ontario public schools

Governments around the world are investing to bridge the “digital divide,” which refers to the gap among populations in terms of ability to access digital tools and the Internet. This effort is especially evident in public schools, because education has been identified as one contributing factor of the divide. Thus, it is of great public interest to investigate whether schools are providing enough opportunities for youth to engage with ICT as an effort to bridge the digital divide. This proposed research seeks to develop a deeper understanding of ICT use in Ontario’s public schools. By combining new data from the People for Education annual school survey with Ontario’s EQAO data, this study will tackle important questions surrounding the use of digital tools in Ontario’s public school system. In particular, this study will investigate the pattern of computer use for students by socioeconomic variables. Results will be synthesized in the People for Education’s annual report to provide strategic suggestions to address the digital divide in Ontario public schools

The effect of bioceramic textiles on skin temperature in older adults

When absorbed through the skin, far-infrared radiation increases body temperature by improving blood flow. Bioceramic textiles are fabrics that emit mild, safe levels of far-infrared radiation, and clothing made from these materials may improve blood flow to increase body temperature. As we age, our body’s ability to regulate blood flow and control temperature is reduced, and whether bioceramic clothing can still improve body temperature in older adults is unknown. This study will test the effectiveness of Mark’s Work Wearhouse’s bioceramic clothing on improving body temperature in older adults from 45-65 years of age. This research will improve our fundamental understanding of the effects of far-infrared radiation on temperature control in older adults, benefitting Mark’s Work Wearhouse by scientifically evaluating the thermal performance of their bioceramic clothing line in older adults.

Clinicial Archive for Data Science

Till this time the data of patients in clinics are not saved in a way comfortable for further research especially if it is some specific disease, which has not been studied enough yet, it is hard for a doctor to collect all the data correctly to see the whole picture of the patient’s health.
The solution is a platform with a user interface that helps to collect the data properly. The project provides clinics with an interface where the doctors can manipulate a lot of objects – etc. filled out forms, questionnaires, and subjects like patients and their tumors. For each patient, the doctor can create new personalized surveys. With all the data which is saved in the system, it can be easily created a statistic of all the patients of a doctor, or history of taking surveys, visits, passing some analyses of the patient.
My goal working here is to add some new visualization features to make the manipulation of data in the database simpler which will significantly facilitate further development in such a way the data can be easily analyzed.

Mechanical dewatering and modeling of gasification processes to attain more green fuels from wood waste materials

Bridges Environmental Solutions Inc. and Deadwood Innovation Inc. have developed a novel and low-cost process for dewatering wood and waste wood materials and extracting a lignin-based solution useful in subsequent wood reforming and laminating processes, which we have helped develop. They use this lignin product to both chemically modify cellulose structures and permanently reform wood for improved mechanical properties. Their technology reduces the chemical and energy investments needed for attaining lignin and offers an environmentally friendly alternative to adhesives and laminates used in other manufacturing processes. Their dewatering process also represents a means for taking wood waste materials that have very low value, such as legacy sawdust piles and bush grind with high moisture content and converting them into useable feedstock for biofuels and syngas production.
To further develop their technology, they need to 1) validate the energy balance and cost recovery of their novel dewatering process; 2) chemically characterize the composition of the lignin product they produce; and 3) improve the colour, purity, and stability of that lignin product to better serve the product quality requirements needed by other industries.

Aptamer-facilitated Virus Shielding (Apta?ViSh) Technology and Aptamer-facilitated AntivirusShielding (Apta-AntiviSh) Technology to extend the in vivo action of oncolytic viruses. Year One

This project aims to develop an aptamer?based technology to enhance the in?vivo survival of oncolytic viruses and thus the efficiency of virotherapy. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) can selectively replicate in tumor cells, leading to lysis of the tumor. OVs are particularly effective against metastatic cancers, which are especially difficult to treat conventionally. However, OVs can be deactivated by antiviral neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) and cleared from the circulation. In this project we plan to use virus?binding aptamers to modify the surface of OVs via Apta?ViSh technology, in order prevent their recognition by nAbs. Furthermore, we are planning to shield the nAbs via Apta?AntiviSh technology, using different aptamers, to enhance the anticancer activity of OVs by a dual mechanism. This research project will allow biopharmaceutical companies to engineer new aptamer?based anticancer drugs. This project will make cancer treatment more efficient and will alleviate the burden of cancer on the national economy.

Turkey Vulture Migration, Ecology, and Health in the Pacific Northwest

This project is examining the movements (migratory and local), status, and health of the Turkey Vulture in the Pacific Northwest, with a particular focus on Vancouver Island. This is at the northwestern edge of their relatively recent (and continuing) apparent range expansion and population growth locally. Through a process of trapping, tagging, monitoring, and observing vultures, we aim to learn about various aspects of their life history. These aspects include their local movements, foraging, and breeding habits/habitats, including details of nest sites and roosts. Data collected on their longer distance movements in spring and fall will contribute to a broader study of vulture migration in the Americas being conducted by Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. We are also examining baseline health parameters of our local vulture population, including their general body condition, exposure to contaminants such as lead and microplastics, and the presence of parasites.

Equivalent stress formulation for stress design of pipelines

This project aims to provide new stress-design equations based on the equivalent stress criterion for the design of pipelines. The first part of the project will evaluate the safety levels of the stress-design equations already existing in the design standards. The second part will focus on the proposal and calibration of the new stress-design equations that ensure an appropriate safety level for the designed pipelines. The new equations will be proposed to the CSA Z662 design technical subcommittee (TSC) which the primary supervisor is a member of. In addition, TC Energy can use the new equations that will be more reliable at predicting the yield capacity of the pipe steel material.
