Optical shot noise squeezing to improve signal to noise ratio in dual comb spectroscopy.
Multiple applications in dual comb spectroscopy are limited by low signal levels with respect to the noise. This limits the quality of the spectroscopic measurements. The goal of this project is to develop a new measurement technique that allows us to increase the signal to noise ratio in dual comb spectroscopy by exceeding the semi-classical shot noise limit. Multiple techniques will be studied, such as chirping and electro-optic combs modulated in phase. These techniques allow us to put the noise of the comb in quadrature with the signal of interest by manipulating the electromagnetic field produced by the frequency comb. This improvement of the signal to noise ratio would be a crucial advancement in dual comb spectroscopy, because it would allow for a better characterization of green house gases contributing to climate change.
