Combining Building Integrated Photovoltaic / Thermal (BIPV/T) system and Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) with a thermal storage potentially can increase the efficiency of the heat pump and therefore reduce cost of heating and cooling for the building. In addition, this system potentially can reduce the GHG emission.
A hollow core concrete floor can be used as a heat storage. Excess heat during the day can be stored in the concrete and be used during the night when the heating demand of the building is higher. This thermal energy can be used to increase the temperature of the inlet to the ASHP and as a result increase the efficiency of the heat pump.

Lenmark Industries LTD-Digital Marketing Assistant-Ashley

Founders Leonard and Mark Buhler have started Lenmark in 2016, with buying and selling equipment auctions, but they have quickly realized that there must be a better way for people and businesses to transact equipment and assets. This is how the idea was born and the development moved on from here, towards growing a business focused on e-commerce and digitalization. Lenmark understands there has been a shift in technology. We took the hard work out and have created an automated proprietary software to help us store, manage, and list our products on all of our marketing channels. When it comes to e-commerce, branding becomes an inevitable need. Brand development for online businesses can be very complex, as it has so many different facets. This project is aimed at building a branding process that will stand out and will situate our organization apart from our competitors. The Digital Marketing intern will utilize her knowledge and in-class learnings to build a real life strategy and increase our online market exposure by using Search Engine Optimization. This project will support more effective e-commerce processes will support the optimization of our current platforms.

Flywheel Digital-Junior Growth Strategist-John

A technical marketing agency, Flywheel Digital provides data-driven SEO and digital advertising services. We specialize in “feedback loops,” i.e. using data from customers’ behaviours online to inform our strategy. To illustrate, we would often launch several test campaigns and then double down on the “winner” based on the highest number of conversions. In the last year, numerous changes in data collection and privacy policies have changed the nature of the data we can access, which in turn reflects our need to change strategies. More often than not, we can no longer determine precisely how many conversions our campaigns drive. This has led to lower ad spending and less business across the industry. This represents a challenge and an opportunity to differentiate ourselves. This project will allow the intern to conduct research on improving digital advertising feedback loops and make a presentation recommending changes to data practices to Flywheel leadership. The Digital Junior Growth Strategist will experiment with applying the recommended changes in data practices in a controlled, friendly “test” client environment. Once the recommended changes are validated, the intern will work with the Flywheel team to roll them out across all Flywheel clients.

Digitalization and automation of lab processes for life science companies to improve efficiency

Scispot is on a mission to help life science companies including Canadian biotech companies automate and digitalize their lab processes while keeping track of all of their resources (samples, inventory, equipment, etc.). The goal of this project is to improve and grow our platform to support as many life science companies as possible. This project aims to improve the current platform’s features while also creating new features to support different workflows for different companies. The aim is to further improve the UX and UI of the platform while being intuitive as digital solutions not being intuitive enough is a major concern in this industry. While the platform is being improved on, this project aims to expand the product’s market presence and outreach to reach life science companies far and wide. We believe our product has the potential to have a significant impact on the bioeconomy and help bring new life-saving products to market faster.

Digital Wallet Integration with Multiple Blockchain Networks

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is a remarkable trend that the documents on papers are replaced by digital documents. The partner organization, MyLaminin, has developed a new blockchain-enabled document sharing and verification service platform, that enables individuals, organizations, and governments to securely share important personal and business documents using blockchain. This project aims to extend MyLaminin’s platform to support multiple different blockchain networks that issue their credentials securely to a single digital wallet. The intern will understand the scope of change and/or modifications that would be required to enable different blockchain networks. The new functions of the envisioned platform include credential management for different networks, document request and sharing for multiple organizations, and document sharing on different blockchain networks. In the project, MyLaminin will acquire the comprehensive solution of the platform extension, including the documents of requirement analysis, design, development, and test plan.

Analysis of the best performing technologies will be conducted relative to the areas of buildingintegrated energy generation and storage of such energy at the building/community scale.Relevant product and other technological literature will be collected and various areas of performancewill be used for comparison. Such metrics of performance for generation/harvesting technology willinclude (but may not be limited to) conversion efficiency from the energy source to usable energy, costof installation and useful operating life span. Metrics of performance for storage technology will include(but may not be limited to) total energy storage capacity, losses and other factors (such as durability)affecting storage efficiency, cost of installation and useful operating life span. Limiting factors such asinstallation requirements and building code requirements will also be explored. This will provide S2E with a useful resource for implementing such technologies into Project SmartCommunity and other future projects while also providing a framework for a database of products.
