How the Ronald Lake Bison Herd (RLBH) interact with wetland meadows

The purpose of this research is to further the understanding of how wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) interact with wetland meadows. This includes examining the environmental factors that contribute to the structure of these wetlands, determining what environmental factors influence bison selection of foraging sites within individual wetlands, and showing to what extent individual bison display site fidelity to wetland foraging locations within their range. This research conducted under the support of this grant will contribute to a body of knowledge on the Ronald Lake Wood Bison Herd located in northeastern Alberta. The funding partner (ACFN-DLRM) is committed to continuing research with a goal of protecting the RLBH and their habitats, this research will enable strengthened protection and understanding.

A computer-vision assisted system for on-site construction to monitor safety and track productivity

Construction sites are accident-prone sites and despite numerous efforts to reduce incidents, they continue to occur. Among others, fall accidents, in particular, account for the majority of these incidents, necessitating the implementation of proper management strategies. Traditional techniques for providing safety and preventing accidents are adequate and appropriate for improving safety, however, they are not able to adapt to the changing environment. In this proposal, a computer vision based system is proposed that is able to detect workers and take appropriate actions depending on the situation. The system will be able to prevent accidents by alarming the workers about the hazardous situation.

The potential to produce lower carbon intensive (CI) transportation fuels via co-processing at existing oil refineries

Co-processing has been commercialised by Parkland Burnaby refinery which allows the refiner to produce lower carbon intensity fuels. Significant amount of process data has also been generated. The intern made use of the commercial data and evaluated the impact of these alternative feedstocks to existing refining operation, like yield, operating conditions. More importantly, the intern is exploring the possibilities to develop new method (beyond simple correlation) that can quantify the renewable content in different streams (tracking the green molecules). The expected results hope to incentivise refineries in Canada and the rest of the world to co-process and lower the overall carbon intensity of petroleum products while helping policy makers to credit these producers.

Lab2Market West: Advancing echocardiography scanning through multiview fusion using robotics and machine learning

Echocardiography is widely used for scanning cardiac patients to assess the health of their hearts. Despite its wide use, echocardiography suffers from a few limitations, including the limited field-of-view and longer scanning times. We propose a product using a collaborative robot arm to overcome these limitations. Our project allows scanning the heart from different locations and fusing them to get a combined single scan. It also makes the overall scanning process efficient by moving the ultrasound probe to the desired locations quickly. In this project, an internship student will perform the market analysis by consulting numerous stakeholders to prepare a business plan for product development.

Domain incremental learning in forgery detection

Digital image forgery has become a worldwide pandemic, with many forms of forgery (e.g., insurance fraud, fake news, identity theft) negatively affecting our life. This effect could be attributed to the accessible costs of mobile phones and digital cameras, which has led to an exponential proliferation of digital images, and the availability of many image editing tools that allow easy manipulation of images, resulting in high-quality forgeries. In this project, we intend to leverage the powerful representation capabilities of deep models to address the problem of forgery detection in realistic and challenging scenarios, such as incrementally learning across continuously evolving domains.

Development of a support tool for product maintenance using augmented reality

Augmented Reality (AR) provides real-time interactive instructions to improve efficiency and accuracy of product maintenance processes. Although different methods have been proposed for the AR-based product maintenance, there is a lack of methods of automatic product disassembly and assembly planning under the AR environment. This project develops an AR-based tool for product maintenance instructions. The maintenance targets are modeled, tracked and simulated in an AR user interface developed to facilitate the guide and visualization of maintenance operations. The maintenance detail is provided by an AR device in the operation. The developed tool can be applied in industrial maintenance and operation training.

Toxplainer : Bias identification and explanation in a toxicity detection language model

Online multiplayer games continue to see an increase in their popularity and their playerbase is becoming increasingly diverse. At the same time, there is a concerning amount of harm and harassment found in text chat which prevents games from being safe and inclusive online spaces. Current detection solutions and moderation systems falls short of addressing this issue at scale. More innovative automated detection tools, that use machine learning to consider the context of the chat rather than a list of keywords, are the first steps towards a solution that can treat a large quantity of data easily. However, these tools use large language models that are known to perpetuate social biases in their applications which hampers their effectiveness and can harm the very communities they are intended to protect. The purpose of this project is to identify identity-based biases and explain their sources in language models trained to detect toxicity in online multiplayer games’ text chat. The findings from this research are expected to contribute to the creation of more inclusive online spaces in multiplayer games through effective and fair harm detection tools.

Le projet de développement d’une solution robotisée pour l’application d’étiquettes dans un contexte industriel permettra à Premier Tech Systèmes Automatisés (PTSA) de mettre sur pieds (Étude de faisabilité technicoéconomique, Conception et réalisation) un système d’étiquetage modulaire pouvant s’intégrer à des lignes de production. Ce projet est important et captive l’attention chez PTSA parce qu’il permet de mettre une solution canadienne sur le marché nord-américain; il permettra à moyen terme d’exporter le savoir-faire canadien. La nouvelle donne économique et le manque de ressources humaines actuel a entrainé une demande accentuée des solutions robotisées en industrie et par conséquent une augmentation du besoin de systèmes d’étiquetage des palettes de produits. Ce projet fait partie de cette chaine de solution; il comblera le besoin d’indépendance de l’industrie canadienne et mettra une solution moins onéreuse que celle existante sur le marché car elle sera fabriquée localement.

Relating Quantitative ESG to the Evolving ESG Regulatory / Reporting Landscape

The field of responsible investing is rapidly expanding, with even greater attention on the importance of responsible investment in 2021, as seen in the aftermath of the hugely impactful COP26 summit. Directing our financial resources in a sustainable direction has the potential to have a massive impact on helping us meet the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN. Though the importance of better alignment between finance and sustainability is clear, and now has a very strong consensus around it, investors still lack the right tools to support their research process in terms of sustainability. They rely on high level data that is largely known not to be reliable, which leads to massive misallocations of capital. RiskLab at the University Toronto has been a contributor to the growing body of work on quantitative Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) investing, and is now looking to round out its research capabilities by bringing in the functional and regulatory perspective on the rapidly shifting landscape of ESG.

Alliages à haute entropie TiZrCrMnNi et TiZrVFeNi pour le stockage de l’hydrogène

Les hydrures métalliques sont un moyen sûr et efficace pour stocker l’hydrogène. Ce projet porte sur une nouvelle classe d’hydrures, les alliages à haute entropie. Deux alliages seront étudiés : TiZrCrMnNi et TiZrVFeNi. Dans un premier temps des calculs théoriques seront effectués afin de prédire la structure cristalline et la capacité de stockage d’hydrogène de ces deux alliages. Dans un deuxième temps, les alliages seront synthétisés et leurs structures cristallines avant et après absorption d’hydrogène seront évalués. Les capacités de stockage de l’hydrogène seront aussi mesurées. La recherche vise à vérifier si la méthode théorique proposée est fiable pour être utilisée dans la sélection/conception de nouveaux alliages à haute entropie pour les applications de stockage d’hydrogène.

Transformational Specification of Out-of-Thin-Air Memory Models

Much of the performance in today’s computing devices such as mobiles, desktops, supercomputers, etc. can be attributed to concurrency – the ability to perform more than one task simultaneously. In addition, performance of software that run on such devices greatly benefit from the compiler (software that translates our code to be run by hardware) that optimizes them. Interplay between compiler optimizations and such concurrent devices have been known to cause erroneous software behaviors, which can been fatal. The goal of this project is to explain these concurrent behaviors precisely in terms of the optimizations that are done by the compiler. We will utilize this information to synthesize a concurrent model which can help us rule out optimizations that can cause software behave erroneously. We will use such a model to develop reasoning techniques which will help in testing and verifying pieces of critical software.
