Evaluation of Settlement Workers in School (SWIS)

Newcomers Employment and Education Development Services (N.E.E.D.S.) Inc. is a non-profit, charitable organization. The agency was established in 1999 by immigrant and refugee women for newcomers to Canada. The organization enhances the integration of newcomers into Canadian society by providing employment, mentorship, education, and social recreational programs as a means to support clients in the development of life skills, confidence, and positive social support networks. Settlement Workers in School (SWIS) is an holistic program at N.E.E.D.S. Inc., which includes a range of activities to promote successful settlement and integration of newcomer children and youth in the Winnipeg community. The internship project will enable N.E.E.D.S to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the Settlement Workers in School (SWIS) to measure its effectiveness in achieving its proposed outcomes, identify gaps, and recommendations for improving the design, delivery and effectiveness of the program.

Tectonics, deformation, fluid flow and gold metallogeny during Cretaceous inversion of the Selwyn basin

Gold mining is an important industry for the Yukon economy and provides minerals critical to the Canadian economy. However, most of the historically mined deposits have targeted a relatively small portion of Yukon territory related to the formation of a volcanic arc about 100 to 90 million of years ago. This project will characterize a new type of gold mineralization located in the sedimentary rocks of the Selwyn basin of eastern Yukon, near the city of Mayo. It will bring a new understanding of how the gold mineralization formed with respect to the different episodes of mountain building events related to the formation of the Cordillera mountains. Ultimately this strategic knowledge will help facilitate the development of new gold resources in western Canada.

Personal Transportation Vehicle for use in Local Neighborhoods

The main objective of this project is to provide the growing elderly population with a means of transportation, which will allow them to get around the community to perform their daily activities. This project will focus on designing a personal transport vehicle that will be safe, easy to drive, and user friendly. This vehicle will be designed in a manner so that it can provide transportation to anyone in the society. Existence of such a vehicle will decrease the need for public transit improvements, and provide people with a sustainable mean of transportation. This will also decrease the amount of cars on the road, clearing up traffic and pollution.

Le laboratoire d’innovation en transfert
? assurer l’accès à des ressources ayant un effet levier pour documenter et systématiser des innovations porteuses.
Le projet “Récit de la transition et innovation en transfert” permettra de décupler l’effet du TIESS et ultimement de mieux appuyer la transformation des pratiques des organisations de l’économie sociale et du développement territorial en vue de la transition socioécologique de la société. Il vise à l’articulation d’une trame narrative qui démontre la cohérence des différents projets, outils de transfert et connaissances développés par le TIESS et leur inscription dans une perspective de transition sociale et écologique. Le stagiaire aura pour mission de créer des outils synthétiques et accessibles qui contribuent à ce récit de la transition.
Plus spécifiquement, le projet va:
? créer des outils de transfert réellement innovants;
? accroître la diffusion et le rayonnement des outils créés;
? Participer à la construction de chemins clairs et cohérents pour accéder à l’information ;

Student Support for Housing Programming

North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC) serves the community within the geographic area north of the CP tracks, south of Carruthers Avenue., east of McPhillips Street, and west of the Red River. The mandate of the corporation is to promote the social, economic, and cultural renewal of the North End of Winnipeg. It does this by improving the quality and accessibility of housing, creating jobs, upgrading commercial and industrial areas, implementing employment development programs, improving the overall image of the community, and through crime reduction initiatives. Some of the challenges that the organization is facing revolve around their housing programming. Challenges such as making sure tenants know their rights, that members of the community are well-equipped with the right documentation to apply for housing, and working on decreasing eviction rates. The deliverable will be to complete a project under one of the program areas. In consultation between the supervisor and student, the project will be developed with sensitivity to the current COVID-19 public health guidelines. Examples of projects could include organizing and running an online workshop series, completing a data analysis project, or completing a neighbourhood housing audit.

Depth estimation on wet roadways using RGB stereo

Computer vision systems are a key component for autonomous vehicles and driver assistance. To be
robust, such systems must be able to handle challenging conditions such as night driving and rain.
Previously Algolux proposed multimodal sensor fusion using RGB, gated and lidar for robust object
detection and dense depth estimation under low light and adverse weather. This project will address the
problem of wet roadways which produce elongated highlights that we call ‘specular streaks’. Specular
streaks can cause problems for stereo depth estimation because they give rise to disparity estimates that
are inconsistent with the roadway depth. The goal of this project is to segment these streaks and to infer
the roadway depth in their presence. The project will explore a combination of supervised, semisupervised
and self-supervised learning, and will combine learning-based approaches with physically
based image formation models process to enforce consistency between different prediction tasks.
Evaluation will be performed using manually annotated streak segmentation, lidar-based depth data, and
simulated data under different weather and illumination conditions in urban and highway scenarios.

Supporting Best Practices to Collecting Information and Measuring Social Impact in the Non-Profit Sector

This project was developed to attend to Merchant’s Corner Inc. (MCI) needs. MCI is a non-profit organization situated in Winnipeg’s Inner-city area that opened in 2018 to support and empower the North End community through housing, community development, and education opportunities. The building was a 20-year in the making community hub that was re-developed and transformed into a safe and positive environment for children, youth and families. The location comprises 30 affordable housing units, shared classroom spaces, and shared community areas. The purpose of the project is to help the organization by supporting community initiatives and assisting in designing a database system for Merchant’s Corner Housing program. The main goal is to create a searchable database containing important information from tenants about their experience with the organization. The information will be collected from residents using different tools and following Community-based Participatory Research and Indigenous Research methodologies, focusing on relationship building. The database will contain valuable information to measure social impact and strengthen Merchants Corner’s portfolio. As a secondary goal, this project will also help with community development initiatives, increasing opportunities for tenants and community members to connect.

Innovation and application of energy-economy-emissions models

The goal for this project is to support the research of three master’s students whose work would help advance the methods for estimating – using energy-economy-emissions models – the likely emissions, economic and equity impacts of GHG-reducing policies by governments at three levels in Canada: federal, provincial-territorial, municipal. The modelling innovations and applications from these three interns will improve Canada’s ability to achieve its GHG commitments, notably its net-zero by 2050 target. After graduating, the students will be highly qualified personnel likely to play key roles in the efforts of Canada and other countries to accelerate the global energy transition that is essential for preventing a catastrophic outcome for humanity.

Mental Health Support for Newcomers Qualitative Research

Sara Riel wants to improve organizational support to newcomers to Manitoba with their mental health needs.
“Past studies suggest that immigrants, generally, arrive in Canada with better self-perceived mental health than Canadians, but it declines after a period of time (Salami, 2017).” This has deteriorated further during the Pandemic. (Stats Can).
There are linguistic and cultural barriers to mental health expression. As a result, newcomers do not readily seek mental health supports, despite facing multiple challenges in their transition to a new country. Newcomers may have their own stigma of mental health issues, differing cultural perceptions of the definitions, causes, and handling of mental health, and a lack of awareness of supports offered in the community.

Career Trek is a registered charity whose goal is to educate, help, and inspire youth to access education, employment, and life-long learning opportunities through hands-on career exploration, mentorship, and workshops. Career Trek empowers young adults to understand how to get where they want to be and gives them tools for success, such as skill development and career-oriented programming, which engages young adults and encourages them to get excited about their future. This internship project will work to increase awareness and recruit more youth and young mothers to join the Career Trek programming that runs throughout the school year. The final written report after the two programs completion will document successes and create an outline for best practices and areas that could be improved upon to ensure success for next years summer camps and other types of programs.

Cloverdale Curling Club-Marketing and Administrative Intern-Kirk

Curling has been described as the ‘Roarin’ Game’, with the ‘roar’ coming from the noise of a granite stone as it travels over the ice. The Cloverdale Curling Club (formerly known as Valley Curling Club) has been home to the sport of curling in Cloverdale since 1954. The club offers a variety of curling leagues for men, women and youth.
The project’s objective is to create a strategic plan to overcome the continued decline in the numbers of players and members in the Cloverdale Curling Club and an aging player/member base. We are trying to figure out ways to attract newcomers and people of different ethnicity to curling. Our club is situated in the Surrey/Cloverdale area, that’s a young, growing and culturally diverse community. This project will help us create a marketing plan to increase our customer base and generate interest in the local community about the game of curling. The Marketing and Administrative intern will research our local community and demographics to develop effective marketing strategies to generate awareness, attract the audience, and create learning interest in curling. The purpose is to encourage people to join the Cloverdale Curling Club.
