Employing Data Mining and Visualization Strategies for the Analysis of Well-being Indicators: A follow-up

In this project, an online, interactive map visualization tool will be built to illustrate trends of community wellbeing indicators across Nova Scotia using the 2019 Quality of Life survey as the primary source of information. The goal is to empower residents and decision-makers to understand unique well-being trends in communities, providing an invaluable resource for planners, researchers, and policymakers. The Engage team does not have the personnel resources or expertise required to build such a visualization tool and collaborating with experts in this field will make this possible.

Post-traitement statistique des quantiles extrêmes de prévisions issues de modèles météorologiques d’ensemble

Le projet de recherche s’inscrit dans le contexte précis du besoin d’Hydro-Québec de mieux estimer la probabilité de
manifestation de vents de forces dites extrêmes et potentiellement dommageables pour le réseau d’infrastructures électriques.
Il aura pour objectif de développer des modèles statistiques permettant de corriger les biais dans les prévisions de vents afin
de mieux prévoir quels horizons temporels et quelles régions sont à risque de subir des pannes nécessitant l’intervention
d’équipes de réparations. Une meilleure estimation des risques permettra également une meilleure optimisation et gestion des
déplacements des équipes de telle sorte que les délais des pannes s’en trouvent réduits.

Multiobjective and distributed optimization algorithm for the economic dispatch problem

The project concerns the development and validation of a distributed multi-objective optimization algorithm for the economic dispatch problem (EPD), guaranteeing an individual optimization that leads to the global optimization of the system. The algorithms to be developed is based on the multiagent framework.
Many distributed optimization techniques had solved the original EDP, i.e., minimizing the sum of the energy fuel cost generated by each agent. But this problem is incomplete from an environmental standpoint. Minimizing energy emissions is essential to the environmentalists as minimizing the cost is to the users and stakeholders. Multi-objective strategies have been proposed to minimize the emissions and but few- almost none of them, from a purely distributed optimization standpoint. Thus, the important need for distributed multi-objective optimization algorithms for minimizing the energy cost and energy emission cost is still unmet. The proposed project aims at developing a decentralized optimization strategy that deals with time-varying objectives that measure the economic and environmental costs while guaranteeing the global optimization of the entire system. The algorithm will explore the Pareto set and select the best solution for the current state of the system.

La santé dans le cadre des mandats français et britanniques au Liban et en Transjordanie

Mes recherches de doctorat portent sur les systèmes de santé au Liban et en Transjordanie durant le moment très particulier de l’entre-deux-guerres. Durant cette période, ces deux états sont créés et placés sous la tutelle de la France et de la Grande-Bretagne, respectivement. Je m’intéresse à quatre acteurs principaux: les missionnaires, les médecins locaux, les autorités européennes ainsi que les organismes internationaux et philanthropiques. Au travers de leurs réseaux, tous ces acteurs échangent, communiquent, entrent en compétition ou au contraire dans une relation d’entraide en plus de circuler entre les différents espaces. L’objectif de cette thèse est de comprendre en quoi la région nous permet de mieux identifier les débuts de la santé globale, la formation de réseaux entre les acteurs, à la fois au niveau local, régional et global ainsi que la création ou l’amélioration de structures sanitaires au Liban et en Transjordanie.

L’impact de la phénologie de la neige et de la glace sur la qualité de l’eau des lacs alpins

Le projet vise à mieux comprendre les effets d’un couvert de neige et de glace sur le fonctionnement des lacs alpins (en termes
de biogéochimie). Dans ce contexte, l’étudiant réalisera un état de l’art des connaissances, deux échantillonnages de terrain avec
analyses complémentaires en laboratoire. Un échantillonnage l’hiver au niveau des lacs des Chic-Chocs afin de caractériser la
chimie de la glace, de la neige et de la colonne d’eau des lacs sous-jacents. L’autre, l’été suivant afin de pouvoir relier les impacts
des conditions hivernales sur le fonctionnement des lacs pendant les saisons suivantes (ouverture sur un projet plus global).
Résultats attendus :
Analyse préliminaire des données de terrain de 30 lacs de montagne (ampleur, composition chimique de la neige et de la glace ;
propriétés physiques et chimiques de l’eau sous la glace ; morphométrie hydrologie des lacs ; propriétés du bassin versant), avec
rapport apportant des éléments de réponses à la problématique du projet.

EarlyDetect: a cloud based mental health screening tool

Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the world. Diagnosing mental health syndromes have proved challenging for clinicians. This has led to delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Furthermore, the majority of individuals who have mental disorders have more than one condition (co-morbid), which are essential to screen and diagnosis early to achieve symptom remission and achieve full functional recovery. Recognizing the need for an effective assessment tool to foster early detection of mental health disorders, the goal of this Mitacs project is to launch EarlyDetect (ED), which has a machine learning based scoring engine integrated with a cloud based API. ED will improve health outcomes of numerous Canadian patients, improve wait times to receive appropriate treatment, as well as benefit Canada economically by promoting health care efficiency. It will also advance Canada technologically in pace with other international peers on precision mental health applications.

Drawing and Diagnoses: Therapeutic Arts in Refresh Wellness App

Barriers to mental health care include distance, cost, wait times and more (Moroz, Moroz & D’Angelo, 2020). Canadian mental health systems are also becoming increasingly burdened with demand. To prevent ever-increasing wait list times, mental health care systems require a focus on preventative care. A stronger prevention system, one that supports Canadians so they learn to support themselves, will reduce the stress placed on crisis centers, professional waitlists, and individuals with nowhere to turn.
The current project will explore concepts of therapeutic arts as a tool for preventative care while addressing the lack of digitalized options for visual arts-based interventions. It also will further explore the ability and market need to regard art as a tool for developing emotional intelligence.

The company is called Sewllkwe (pronounced sell-kwa) Book, which was founded by Trever Andrew. It is an Indigenous Water Management platform that is a customizable cloud-based application that covers all aspects of managing water and wastewater systems and data directly from any mobile device. The project will be focused on hiring one research assistant with the goal of creating more awareness and customers through creative research and social media initiatives. A thorough marketing research plan will be conducted in addition to the application of social media campaigns during the project. There is a need for more critical research and evaluation of the current water and wastewater market practices, specifically within the Indigenous communities across Canada. A robust marketing plan will be completed by the researchers focused on creating a social media plan for increasing awareness not just in Canada but on a Global Scale, as well as for creating a digital marketing plan for various digital campaigns.

Vivigro is currently developing and implementing a customized inventory management system which will allow us to track inventory movement throughout all of its warehouse locations, trace landed and other costs, and will allow Vivigrow to easily report, both internally and externally, on fully costed inventory. This new inventory management system will be integrated with Vivigro’s existing fertilizer blending system, COMCO, allowing real time data flow to update the inventory management system. This will significantly reduce the amount of time required to input consumption and production data, reduce the risk of human error in data entry, and substantially reduce reporting lag times.
