As a high-growth start-up, 3D Planeta is seeking to adopt innovative practices across all areas of their business to support their mission to develop world-class software solutions and business culture. To support this goal 3D Planeta is seeking to collaborate with NBCC subject matter experts to co-supervise interns to support projects related to programming, graphics and user experience, business analysis and human resources.

The NBCC interns will bring skills and expertise that can support a range of project objectives, ranging from early development to its late-stage components. Working with the NBCC allows 3D Planeta to access a workforce-ready skillset that compliments the existing team and helps diversify the training and experience of team members in the region by drawing from various post-secondary sources.

1.1 Project title: Determining a Sustainable Business Model for the VERDICT Adjudication Platform

The vision for the VERDICT platform is to become the first choice for online event adjudication support in the global VTE research community, which will in turn contribute to the Network’s mission of promoting and facilitating clinical VTE research that is collaborative, methodologically rigorous, and yields valid results. This innovation project is focused on building the business model and promotional strategy for VERDICT. The project will allow INVENT-VTE and its partners to learn how to navigate the business and marketing space, as well as to equip the current team with the tools to move ahead with the potential ‘commercialization’ of the VERDICT platform.

Enhancements to the Simulation of a Methane Emission Reduction Program

The upstream oil and gas sector is the second largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions within Canada. As new policies and regulations are being introduced to reduce methane emissions, Canada’s oil and gas producers and provincial regulators need to be able to quantify the cost-effectiveness of various strategies to reduce emissions and identify the best technologies to quantify methane emissions. Arolytics Incorporated, a Canadian SME, has developed a simulation-based software product called AROfemp, which they use to help their clients in the oil and gas sector design fugitive emissions management programs (FEMPs), in order to satisfy methane emissions regulations. However, in its current state, AROfemp does not address the quantification accuracy of these FEMPs and is lengthy to run. The first objective of this project is to review the internal design and stochastic simulation model of the software, and apply statistical and computing techniques to accelerate the code in order to support more complex evaluations. The second objective is to review the statistical methods used to estimate the parameters in the simulation model, propose related improvements (by e.g. proposing more realistic probability distributions), and ensure these outputs are all delivered with a statistically sound error estimate.

An Integrated Technology Architect

Patients are facing excessive wait times at hospitals, especially within Emergency Departments. Long wait times expose patients to unnecessary risks, and are very costly to hospitals. In addition, a number of governmental and medical guidelines impose limits on patient wait times. This has prompted hospitals to explore technologies that can enhance patients flow and reduce wait times. This research aims to address patients wait time issues by deploying a Care Process Management system (CPM) that models and monitor clinical pathways as a process model. The proposed approach provides real time dashboards where hospital administrators can view current patient states and can predict when a patient wait time will exceed a specified limit. This enables the administrator to take corrective action in a timely manner to address the cause of the delay. When completed, such a system will improve patient safety, reduce wait times, enhance patient satisfaction, and maximize resource utilization

État des lieux des besoins en santé et bien-être des femmes en Montérégie

S’inscrivant dans les suites du Plan d’action en santé et bien-être des femmes 2020-2024 du gouvernement du Québec, ce projet vise à brosser un portrait de la situation de la santé et du bien-être des femmes en Montérégie. À termes, cette recherche permettra à la Table de concertation des groupes de femmes de la Montérégie d’établir des priorités d’action régionales s’appuyant sur les besoins réels des femmes et l’état actuel des services disponibles en matière de santé et de bien-être des femmes.

Generating high fidelity synthetic transactional sequences with transformers.

At a high level, the goal of this project is to create a system for producing synthetic datasets based on real data. As a large financial crime detection firm, Verafin deals with large volumes of sensitive data which must be kept private, however they are also interested in collaborating with academics to gain new insights into their data. In this project we will use recent developments from the field of generative modeling to design a system which can create synthetic datasets which are nearly indistinguishable from the true data they are mimicking, while not exposing information which must be kept private. In addition to making it easier for Verafin to collaborate with external parties, another benefit is Verafin can use the synthetic data to create more realistic product demonstrations for potential clients.

CONCEPTION D’UNE SALLE DE FINITION DU BOIS ROBOTISÉE INCLUANT L’ADAPTATION D’UN COBOT

L’objectif du projet sera de proposer une conception de salle de finition du bois robotisée incluant le choix de l’équipement robotique, les équipements de manutention requis et l’adaptation d’un cobot sélectionné à l’espace de travail et aux normes de sécurité en vigueur.
L’automatisation du procédé de finition du bois va permettre d’accroître l’efficacité, la productivité, la fiabilité et la sécurité de cette tâche. Toutefois, cette tache peut être complexe compte tenu de la précision des manipulations et de la variabilité des pièces de bois pouvant être produites. La finition demande donc généralement l’expertise d’un humain. le travail du stagiare sera de proposer une conception préliminaire d’un environnement adéquat de cellule robotisée qui satisfait les requis d’une tache de peinture, incluant toutes les normes en vigueur.
Une partie importante du projet sera consacrée à rendre le bras robotique collaboratif sélectioné résistant aux particules en suspension ainsi qu’aux risques d’explosion. Le robot fonctionnera dans un milieu où des risques d’incendie ou d’explosion peuvent exister en raison de vapeurs, liquides, et même des particules qui peuvent être facilement inflammable généré par le procédé de finition (vernis, huile et peinture).

Développement d’un compilateur AOT pour Python

Le projet porte sur le développement de fonctionnalités d’un compilateur pour Python (un logiciel produisant des instructions machine pour le langage de programmation Python). Le développement de ces fonctionnalités augmentera la compatibilité du compilateur avec la syntaxe de Python et permettra d’obtenir des gains de performance. Ces deux points faciliteront l’adoption de cette technologie par le public visé par l’entreprise.

Creating a baseline for Science Based Targets in the apparel industry

tentree aims to create Science-Based Targets to ensure its climate-positive ambitions. With the rise of corporate sustainability, creating sustainability goals backed by science can push organizations to realize these ambitions. The research will provide foundational work for creating an impact report and sustainability agenda. The aim is to demonstrate tentree’s leadership in the sustainable apparel industry and chart a roadmap towards sustainability targets and ambitions. Since the fashion industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions, with estimates placing the industry as responsible for ~10% of emissions, it is essential that action is taken based on data-driven decisions. As a signatory to the United Nations Climate Change Fashion Charter on Climate Action, tentree has agreed to create Science-based targets and chart a roadmap towards progress. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that climate change is unequivocally human-induced, it is important that the fashion industry show leadership and chart a path towards the 1.5oC future pathway demonstrating the role businesses have to the planet and responsible business practices.

Beyond GDP – Metric Feasibility Study

The performance of an economy has largely been measured by one dominant metric above all – GDP. Measuring economic prosperity through a singular metric fails to consider other economic growth factors that extend beyond
GDP that contribute to the prosperity of a country and its citizens. This project will assess the leading ‘Beyond GDP’ metrics that seek to better measure economic prosperity and recommend the most impactful metrics to track
based our local context. The insights collected from this research will lend to providing an alternative economic prosperity framework for the VEC to leverage and publicize (in terms of informing policy at a city, provincial and
national level).

Ginawaydaganuc: Indigenous knowledge sharing, Indigenous food sovereignty and UN SDG Goals

This project aims to challenge unjust systems and policies and support Indigenous people in their efforts to establish their food systems and adapt to the new COVID-19 world. It will explore ways to address long-term pandemic-related food security challenges led by Indigenous organizations. The intern will gather information from experiences and existing research across Indigenous communities about existing challenges and potential opportunities to achieve food security and food sovereignty. Using this research, the intern will support the creation of an Indigenous-led knowledge sharing platform.

Mesure distante et analyse de la consommation des foyers munis de bornes de recharge pour voitures électriques en multilogement

Ce projet a pour objectif principal d’acquérir des données sur la consommation électrique des chargeurs pour
véhicules électriques. L’acquisition de ces données se fera à l’aide de contrôleurs de charge déployés dans des
immeubles à logements et en copropriété. Ces données serviront à améliorer le processus de gestion de la charge
des véhicules électriques et faciliteront la prévision de la consommation durant les périodes de pointe. L’atteinte
de cet objectif exige la conception d’un dispositif intelligent connecté qui échantillonnera d’une façon périodique
la consommation électrique des bornes de charge. Le dispositif intelligent doit aussi transmettre les données
d’une façon fiable et sécuritaire vers un stockage infonuagique pour la visualisation et le traitement prédictif. La
prévision de la consommation électrique sera basée sur des méthodes d’intelligence artificielle. À l’heure actuelle,
il n’existe pas un portail de consommation des véhicules électriques pour les immeubles à logements en
copropriété.
