Breeding Ecology of Raptors Breeding near Rankin Inlet, NU

Nestling survival is known to decrease with lay date (Anctil et al. In Press). Although this pattern is consistent with one aspect of the condition-dependent model, the data describe only a single breeding season. The objective of this project is to use a 30 year data set to investigate the relationship among arrival date, clutch size and a crude measure of body condition (body weight). In addition, the graduate student responsible for this project will use archived blood samples (2008-2012) as well as those collected in 2013 to examine the relationship between physiological stress markers (e.g., corticosterone) to assess the relationships between body condition, arrival date, lay date, clutch size, and reproductive success. In addition, the intern will compare these variables for birds breeding near to and away from industrial development. Results will be made available to industry collaborators and other contributors to aid in the management of this species.

Investigating the Effect of Cognitive Training Simultaneously with Application of either Active or Sham Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation on the Executive Brain Functions in Dementia Population

Built upon our successful pilot projects, the goal of this project is to investigate the effect of transcranial alternative current stimulation (tACS) paired with cognitive exercises in a placebo-controlled study on individuals with dementia, and develop novel technologies to monitor its effects and also predict a patient’s response to a treatment at baseline. This project can lead to an efficient optimized personalized treatment strategy for dementia.

Fake User Detection

This project investigates whether a user’s entered information in e-commerce sites is fake or real. In order to achieve the goal of understanding and identifying fake users, data are to be collected, managed, and analyzed. In addition to using existing data from the e-commerce partner organization and some third-party data if available, the two major tasks are data collection and data analysis. Customizable tools for data collection and analysis are to be designed, implemented and deployed in collaboration with the partner organization. If meaningful analysis results are obtained, a real user confidence-level system can be designed based on a user’s profile, thus facilitating targeted and priority marketing to potential real customers.

Wireless Readout Integrated Microwave Sensor for Detecting Ice/Snow in Harsh Environments

Several de-icing systems have been developed to reduce economic losses and safety hazards due to ice and snow accretion on home pathways. These de-icing systems need to be energy-efficient, and therefore, must be accompanied by high-performance sensors capable of accurately detecting ice and snow to control the de-icing system. In addition to this application, recent industrial developments have shifted the paradigm of ice sensors towards extreme environment applications requiring sensors be operated in harsh conditions. These sensors must exhibit robust performance with significant accuracy while enduring variations in environmental and operational conditions. To increase the ease of implementation, wireless capabilities are required to widen their adaptability.
Microwave sensing is an emerging technology which has demonstrated contactless, non-intrusive, and robust monitoring and detection performance and is an outstanding candidate for implementing these ice sensors. The innovation will be integrating the transducer component and the wireless readout electronics on a single substrate for reliable, ultrasensitive, and wireless detection of ice and snow. This unique project will instigate further miniaturization and enhancement to microwave sensor functionality while creating high accuracy ice sensors for currently inaccessible environments without requiring an input source or expensive auxiliary equipment.

Data driven intelligent programming tutor

Korbit Technologies Inc. is developing an e-learning platform to teach artificial intelligence (AI), data science and coding skills. The student interacts with a virtual, personalized AI tutor, through a web-based chat interface. The main objective of this research project is to investigate how a personalized, data-driven learning experience based on the student’s profile, needs, and performance, can improve the comprehension of programming languages and learn practical skills. The project will propose, design and develop concrete tools to enhance the learning experience for students on the Korbit e-learning platform. First, by improving the message generation system used by the AI tutor to assist the student in the completion of the coding exercise (e.g. hints, prompts, explanation of errors, explanation of missing or incorrect code etc.). Second, by creating a recommendation system, to propose the most appropriate exercise (including exercise difficulty, type and feedback) for a specific student using machine learning techniques.

Work improvement for steel fabrication shop by using dynamic value stream mapping

The steel industry in Canada encounters some challenges to have sustainable and efficient steel production. One of these challenges is identifying bottlenecks accurately in steel fabrication workstations. The goal of the proposed research project is to improve work productivity for the partner company (Ocean Steel). The research work included conducting a literature review to evaluate what are the current applied solutions to resolve the same issue encountered with Ocean Steel. However, most of the solutions found were not applicable to Ocean Steel case (some improvement is required). Consequently, the work will include activities such as data collection automation, time studies, simulation modelling, and lean-based optimization. The partner company will benefit from this project by having an accurate information about their productivity and having a better opportunity of production and work improvement. Using a smart audio device, Tochie in a long term care home

This project will engage seniors, family members, and care staff, a total of 53 participants in a long-term care home to adopt a new technolopgydevice, Tochie for familyconnection. Participants will use the assistive audio speakers named Tochie over one month. Ongoing support and assistance will be provided to all participants during the one month to maximize the device’s potential benefit. After one month, all participants will be interviewed in focus groups to explore their experience and feedback on using the smart audio device. This project intends to explore user experiences of technology adoption. The findings of this project will provide helpful insight into specific needs and preferences of LTC residents and their families. Technology adoption barriers and challenges will be identified. Tochtech will use research reults to improve their product design on Tochie.

Performance Evaluation of Solvent Co-Injection Scenarios in Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD)-Based Bitumen Recovery

Through the outlined objectives and methodologies, this project aims at evaluating the performance of the solvent assisted bitumen recovery techniques under various operation scenarios and in presence of reservoir heterogeneities. The objectives are fulfilled through advance numerical reservoir simulation studies, detailed review of the present technologies, and analyzing the laboratory/field production results. Ms. Fazlyeva will be accomplishing the outlined tasks under direct supervisions of senior reservoir engineering and technology developers. By building a solid and comprehensive understanding of the physics and fundamentals of solvent aided bitumen recovery processes, COP can optimize its future solvent applications to ensure maximized bitumen recovery and substantial reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Generation of small molecule from pharmaceuticals waste via thermochemical conversation

In the shadow of a worldwide pandemic, the importance and need for pharmaceutical research is abundantly clear. In Canada alone, 25 billion units of pharmaceuticals are dispensed every year, and of that 30% of the total product ends up as waste, about 1.1 million kilograms per year. How these pharmaceuticals are wasted has impacts both economically and environmentally. Thermochemical conversion is a method to thermally decompose the waste pharmaceuticals in order to convert them into high value added materials. This process leads to obtain a carbon based material called char and a rich oil. Char is high surface material which can be utilize in lots of application such as water/air treatment etc. On the other hand, the generated oil has shown a great potential for recovering the pharmaceutical precursors.

Mental Wellness Application for Current and Post COVID 19 Self Help Training and Assessment Continued

People who experience mental wellness challenges or mental illness often struggle to obtain or maintain a position in the workplace. Furthermore, lack of employment means individuals lose out on a myriad of mental, emotional, and physiological benefits that are generated through work. This is extremely relevant given the current COVID crisis where personal distancing and isolation are required for the greater societal good. In response to this problem, the Digital Integration Centre of Excellence (DICE) at Saskatchewan Polytechnic (Sask Polytech), Refresh Enterprises, Inc. (Refresh), and the Canadian Mental Health Association, Saskatchewan Division (CMHA-SK) are collaborating to finalize the development of the Mental Wellness App (RWA), a multifaceted lifestyle program that will promote healthy mentality and facilitate relational support through peers and professionals. RWA will leverage artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and automatic personality recognition (APR) technology in order to automatically respond to users’ mental and emotional states, offering helpful suggestions and resources. With the individual user’s permission, this information could be shared with involved health care workers, who will also be able to use the app to inform their services.

Covid-19 has already changed how we see the world, the ways in which we think, and how we conduct our lives. The consequences of this pandemic are personal, emotional, psychological, societal, economic, and cultural; and it will leave scars. For nonprofit organizations, however, this is mostly about employee’s mental health, and significant loss of earned revenues, tightening funding environment and recruiting volunteers, growing competition for donors and grants, rising demand for services and increasing call for accountability. Against this background, I aim to help VBI to realize and formulate the best strategies and mechanism to not only mitigate the impact of Covid-19, but also to build a substantial resilient and innovative organization.

Making the Business Case for Using Development Cost Charges for Climate Mitigation

Budgetary constraints are one of the biggest obstacles to local government action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A climate change mitigation development cost charge (DCC) could greatly assist local governments in overcoming this barrier. Planning and legal scholars have outlined the broad contours of such a fee and discussed the policy and technical issues involved in implementation. However, academic work has fallen short of working through these issues practically, even though DCC programs require very careful analysis to be legally defensible and practically feasible. This research project addresses this gap in research by fully developing the concept of a climate mitigation DCC; creating a framework and methodology to put the concept in practice; and demonstrating its practical application by using the City Centre area in Surrey, British Columbia as a case study. The goal of this project is to inspire planners to creatively use DCCs for environmental protection.
