Engineering Intern

The research project consists of the intern finalizing the transfer of data between components of the WiDR Inc wide dynamic range sensor. After this communication path is completed, the intern will design an external interface to showcase the sensors capabilities, this will help with developing the chip, without a driving computer. The intern will also aid in the day-to-day business of WiDR Inc.

EDC BIB Student Intern (May-August)

The EDC BIB Student Intern will work with the Data Management and Stewardship team for EDC, helping inform decisions made by consultants through improving data quality. Data quality is critical in a company like EDC, which makes recommendations for businesses across Canada, because the quality of the data limits the quality of recommendations. Through the Intern’s project(s), she will help to ensure EDC’s information is reliable, accurate, complete, and relevant. By the end of the project, EDC will have the information it needs to help businesses grow, and the Intern will have robust experience with various data management software, priming her for a career in business.

Data Driven Intrusion Detection in Autonomous/Connected Vehicles

Securing autonomous vehicle environments has recently become a hot topic for both industry and academia due to the significant safety and monetary costs associated with security breaches of such environments. This requires different approaches to address the challenges and propose potential solutions at multiple levels of these environments. To that end, machine learning (ML) and blockchain (BC) techniques can play a vital role in ensuring that the safety and security standards are satisfied to protect vehicles from failures that may cause an accident and/or possible attacks. Therefore, this project focuses on exploring the security vulnerabilities associated with the communication technologies used (e.g. short-range and cellular communication technologies) as well as the potential surface attacks associated with the different entities of such environments (e.g. vehicle, controller node, edge node, and access controllers). Moreover, this project investigates the effectiveness and efficiency of ML and BC solutions in addressing and mitigating these vulnerabilities.

Biodiversity of herbivorous insects

Herbivorous insects constitute the majority of our planet’s terrestrial biodiversity, but the species that are best studied are those that are considered pests. This project surveys taxonomic and functional diversity of defoliator communities in both plantations and natural regeneration of white spruce, and relates it to foliar damage and consequences for tree growth. Climate disruption shows species moving their distribution ranges north, and this research will permit identification of novel pest herbivores on the most economically important boreal species, white spruce.

Evaluation of the vibrational behaviour of a system of two spans coupled with a bretelle damper

Dynamic stresses in transmission lines mainly originates from the winds. To control these vibrations and stresses, damper devices are commonly used. In some countries, including France, bretelle dampers are used. Bretelle damper is a low tensioned pieces of conductors that is attached to the overhead conductor spans near the span-ends by means of clamps. Bretelle damper reduces the vibration amplitude due to the energy imparted by the wind using two main mechanisms: First, by its self-damping (frictional forces between the wires of the strand) and second, by transferring part of the energy to the adjacent spans before reaching critical points such as end-span clamps. This type of damper is low-priced, easy to manufacture and can effectively reduce the vibration amplitude in overhead conductors. Very few studies have been conducted on the vibration behavior of single conductors with bretelle dampers and they are mainly experimental researches. Experimental tests are time-consuming and costly. Thus, it is beneficial to develop a finite element model of the system and study the effect of different parameters in the vibrational behavior of the system and evaluate the performance of damper. This FE model will be validated by a simpler analytical model of the system.

Investigating Open Scholarship and InclusivePractices in Higher Education

This project investigates the development of an online service that empowers individuals at higher education institutions to develop and deploy surveys that reveal how faculty, staff, and students at their institutions perceive open scholarship and inclusive practices. We believe that individuals at higher education institutions will be better able to understand and advocate for open and inclusive practices if they have an empirically based understanding of the beliefs, attitudes, and intentions around these issues held by students, faculty, and staff at their home institutions. Thus, our easily used online service will enable access to previously developed surveys, step by step procedures for building new surveys, expert advice, and peer support, thus providing guidance on how to easily adapt and deploy surveys provided by the service. The goal is to make this as easy as possible for non-experts at HE institutions.
