Earth X-ray for Low-Impact Mining

Meeting our national and global commitments to emission reductions requires the increasing utilization of clean technologies. The demand for the minerals needed in clean-tech (such as nickel, copper, zinc, and cobalt) is expected to grow by at least fivefold in the coming years. At the same time, the mineral resource industry needs to reduce its own environmental impact.
The time is therefore ripe for transformative innovation in the mining sector. The Earth X-ray project aims to develop a Discovery Platform that allows for investigating the mineral composition at depths of up to 1 km beneath the Earth surface. This unprecedented capability will be made possible by integrating the novel muon tomography technology from Ideon with a new-to-the-world gravimeter and advanced artificial intelligence from SFU. Combined, these technologies will provide the mining industry with a low-cost, minimally invasive technology for sustainable mineral exploration.

ChainCert platform: Verification of authenticity of certificates by exploiting hybrid Blockchain technologies

Blockchain is a well-known immutable, transparent and anti-counterfeit platform. As such it can be appropriate for submitting certificates for validation and safe-keeping. However, because of its requirements for complex and heavy computations for enhanced security and verification of each submission in the network, in this project, we will first study both public and private Blockchain platforms in detail, in terms of costs, performance, security, throughput and vulnerability. Then we will design a cost-efficient hybrid Blockchain model for validation and authentication of certificates. The proposed method has a great impact to make sure that the paper-based certificates are authenticated and original.
This project has been suggested by the organization.

Methods development and applications for neuromelanin-sensitive MRI

Dopamine and noradrenaline are neurotransmitters that are released from neurons located in the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus. Therefore, these brain structures have the unique property of containing high concentrations of neuromelanin, a dark pigment that can be visualized with specialized MRI sequences. The neuromelanin-sensitive MRI signal has been used to visualize degeneration of these neurons. Recent work has shown that this signal can also serve as a proxy measure for long-term imbalance in activity of these neurotransmitter systems. This line of work will investigate this novel measure as a potential biomarker in diverse populations including, PTSD, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD, and healthy children. The goal of this line of work is to develop and optimize the method and test it in expanded research and clinical applications.

High-throughput cyclotron target manufacturing

Molecular imaging (MI) is a tool designed to help clinicians better understand disease, and potentiates effective clinical patient management through efficient diagnoses, patient stratification and monitoring of treatment response. As such, MI has a rapidly emerging role in the transition toward personalized medicine. One key enabler of MI are radioisotopes, many of which are produced using hospital-based particle accelerators, called cyclotrons. Cyclotron-based isotope production is rapidly increasing in importance as a number of new positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals (pharmaceuticals labeled with radioisotopes) are coming to market. Gallium-68 (68Ga) is one emerging isotope that is experiencing rapid community adoption, particularly as a companion diagnostic in the realm of prostate and neuroendocrine tumor therapies. 68Ga-PSMA and 68Ga-DOTATATE are two examples which, to date, have relied on a clinical 68Ga supply enabled via the germanium-68 (68Ge)/68Ga generator. However, these generators are experiencing supply challenges, which when coupled to their limited isotope output, has several prominent radiopharmaceutical companies exploring novel methods for producing more isotope. ARTMS has developed a particle-accelerator (cyclotron) based solution that enables 100-fold higher 68Ga production by irradiating enriched zinc-68 (68Zn) with accelerated protons. A high-throughput method to manufacture 68Zn cyclotron targets is needed in order to meet looming demand.

Enhancement of metal refining by electrochemical application

High purity structural metal such as steel requires a cleaning process during its production. Conventional cleaning process called refining using molten oxide has been arrived at its limit. Development of a breakthrough technology is required. Beyond utilization of conventional materials engineering, application of electrochemical refining is attempted in this project. The applicant has already carried out a number of experimental works in home university showing possibility of the enhanced refining by the application of electricity. During this visiting research program, it is intended to elucidate its mechanism by exploring electrical conductivity of molten oxide, which has been investigated by the host university. It is expected that a new breakthrough methodology will be developed coupling both high temperature experimental approach with theoretical analysis for the electrochemical refining process.

Social demographic data collection and use in Ontario’s CHCs in the context of virtual delivery of social programs

Ontario’s 73 Community Health Centres provide both health and social care services to at risk populations. During the pandemic, Community Health Centres have had to switch much of their care from in-person to virtual services. This has had some positive effects (for example, by reducing rates of missed appointments) and some negative (many clients do not have access to devices or stable internet). Yet, it is impossible to judge how different population groups have been affected by this change without the right data such as age, sex, education, ethnicity, income, etc. Much of this social demographic data is not collected regularly across Ontario’s CHC. This internship project will help us understand why social demographic data is not collected and who can help ensure it is collected in the future. The project will help the partner, the Community Health Centre’s membership organization, by developing tools and key performance indicators to support better data collection and use.

Development of quantum dot fluorescent probes/contrast agents

Iron-based nanoparticles can not only be used in sensitizers or absorbers but also retain excellent electrical conductivity, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. So far, very few synthetic methods are known to implement stable Iron-based nanomaterials. We propose to develop novel synthesis routes to produce QDs. In addition, we plan to develop surface modification processes to improve the performance of QDs, and to precisely analyze the effects of surface modification on structural and chemical properties according to the surface/interface/depth by various spectroscopic methods. The development of new biocompatible probes, including in-vivo imaging using MRI, provides a breakthrough technology that enables the early diagnosis of many intractable diseases. The biotoxicity and stability of nanomaterials are important for use in biotechnology and medicine. We also propose to develop low-cost synthetic methods, solve toxicity using Fe-based quantum dot synthesis.

Thermal Management for High-power-density Airborne Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Terminals

As a full-service, data-driven solutions provider for aviation, SKYTRAC Systems is developing new 2-MCU satellite communications (SATCOM) terminal, SDL-350, which will be capable of achieving globally available broadband transfer rates of 352 kbps both to and from the aircraft. One critical challenge facing the R&D engineers of SDL-350 is the thermal management, because the power dissipation level of SDL-350 is beyond what is achievable for the convectional thermal designs of avionics. Dr. Li will partner with SKYTRAC to develop an effective thermal design which will enable all components in SDL-350 to operate within their qualified temperature limits.
