Generative models for controlled generation of synthetic sequence-based datasets

At a high level, the goal of this project is to create a system for producing synthetic datasets based on real data. As a large financial crime detection firm, Verafin deals with large volumes of sensitive data which must be kept private, however they are also interested in collaborating with academics to gain new insights into their data. In this project we will use recent developments from the field of generative modeling to design a system which can create synthetic datasets which are nearly indistinguishable from the true data they are mimicking, while not exposing information which must be kept private. In addition to making it easier for Verafin to collaborate with external parties, another benefit is Verafin can use the synthetic data to create more realistic product demonstrations for potential clients.

Her Own Boss! Bridging Settlement and Economic Security for Visible Minority Newcomer Women in BC

HOB! is a community-based action research project with the aim of supporting visible minority newcomer women (VMNW) in starting entrepreneurial businesses. The research objectives of the project include identifying challenges and opportunities that VMNW face in the business environment of Canada. Moreover, this research will provide suggestions for improvement of employment and self-employment services for immigrant women. The Women’s Economic Council (WEC) will benefit from this research project by learning more about a) the challenges and strengths of VMNW in their paths towards self-employment, b) the challenges and strengths of local self-employment service providers, and c) best practices in providing training and support service to VMNW that helps them move towards their economic empowerment.

A Community Needs Assessment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in Newfoundland and Labrador

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a lifelong disorder caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol that impairs cognitive, behavioural, social, and emotional development. It is the leading preventable developmental disability in Canada, impacting an estimated four percent of the general population, with higher rates among certain vulnerable groups. Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rates of heavy drinking in Canada, which elevates the concern associated with this issue and the need for research into FASD in the province. This project comprises a comprehensive, systematic community needs assessment using a mixed-methods approach. Data will be collected through surveys and focus groups with local service providers and stakeholders, including families and individuals directly impacted by FASD, regarding the observed and expected need for FASD resources in NL. This research will identify existing capacity and gaps in knowledge, services, and supports, and inform the development of collaborative, multidisciplinary strategies to address FASD.

Reduction of Software Rework Through the Mitigation of Cognitive Biases

The proposed work will lead to mechanisms for reducing the negative effects of Cognitive Biases – automatic, unconscious elements of the human reasoning system known to cause decision errors. While the outcomes of Cognitive Biases have been studied for decades, there has been almost no research into how to reduce or eliminate their negative effects. The end goal of the proposed work is a suite of mechanisms that reliably, simply and cost-effectively accomplish such ‘de-biasing’ in a workplace setting. The focus for the proposed work is the software engineering industry, where high defect rates are endemic and proven to be highly resistant to technology-based mitigation; we believe that focusing on the psychology of the human beings that create these defects will bring a new kind of mechanism to bear on this most problematic situation.

Flame synthesis of nanomaterials: The agglomeration of nanoparticles interacting via short-/long-range potentials

The agglomeration of nanoparticles under flame conditions is numerically simulated. The focus is placed on the interaction forces between particles. These forces are suspected to play an important role on the agglomeration rate, agglomerate’s geometry, and particle size distribution. This is particularly important in the context of aggregates (chemically bound nanoparticles) or agglomerates (physically bound nanoparticles) production at an industrial level (for example black carbon, silica, titania nanoparticles). In this context, new models may be introduced to take the complex geometry of particles into account. New insights on the aggregate formation could be used to produce particles with specific characteristics, such as geometry or porosity, of industrial interest. This could lead to new particle’s technology applications such as coatings, fillers, reinforcers, etc. Also, it can help to reduce harmful emissions and reduce air pollution.

Comparison of biological effects of Ceylon cinnamon water Extract and metformin

The use of cinnamon as a flavoring agent and a remedy for metabolic, respiratory, and gynecological disorders is widespread throughout the world. Studies suggest that Ceylon cinnamon may be useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This project will use a high-throughput method to analyze how a concentrated water extract of Ceylon cinnamon changes gene expression in human cells. The analyzed data will be compared to existing results from cells treated with the most common medication used for type 2 diabetes, metformin. The goal of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of Ceylon cinnamon water extract compared to metformin. Kurundu will use data from this project to develop Ceylon cinnamon water extract as a potential natural product for the management of type 2 diabetes.

Le Bien-être financier : développement d’un indice de sérénité financière pour une meilleure gestion des finances personnelles en ligne.

Kaira technologie cherche à opérationnaliser son outil, le « coach financier personnel », afin d’aider les individus à atteindre le bien-être financier. Pour y arriver, Kaira doit préalablement définir un indicateur de mesure du bien-être financier. La recherche de cet indicateur est l’objectif poursuivi dans ce projet. Ainsi, une revue complète du concept de bien-être financier permettra de définir ses dimensions et, par la suite, de conceptualiser un indicateur capable de mesurer en temps réel le bien-être financier de l’utilisateur de ladite application. Ensuite, des tests statistiques ainsi que des consultations auprès d’experts du domaine seront utilisés pour valider l’indicateur retenu.

Recherche sur l’adaptation des jeunes et des familles en lien avec la pandémie de la Covid-19 : Une étude longitudinale

La Covid-19 a été déclarée pandémie par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé le 11 mars 2020, résultant d’abord en un confinement général de la province du Québec de mars à mai 2020, et depuis à des mesures sanitaires restrictives dans le but de diminuer la propagation du virus. Ce projet de recherche porte sur l’adaptation des jeunes et des familles dans le contexte de la pandémie de la Covid-19. Il s’agit de poursuivre une recherche qui a débutée à l’été 2020 auprès de parents d’enfants âgés entre 6 et 17 ans et auprès d’adolescents âgés de 14 à 17. Les résultats issus de ce projet de recherche permettront de mieux comprendre les facteurs personnels et familiaux liés à l’adaptation des jeunes et des familles lorsque confrontés à une situation susceptible d’amener une grande charge de stress sur la famille et les individus. Ces résultats pourront mener au développement d’outils afin de favoriser une meilleure adaptation des jeunes et des familles.

Il est prouvé que les entreprises ayant une stratégie en développement durable sont plus performantes que les autres sur les plans de la rétention du personnel, de la réduction de gaz à effet de serre et de l’augmentation de l’impact social. Ecocert Canada désire être un acteur de la relance VERTE des entreprises à la suite de la pandémie. Les entreprises qui se soucient de l’environnement seront en adéquation avec les attentes des consommateurs de la nouvelle génération. Ecocert Canada veut développer un nouveau service dans ses activités en amenant l’expertise européenne pour l’accompagnement des entreprises en stratégie de développement durable. Le groupe Ecocert et sa nouvelle acquisition “Des enjeux et des hommes” ont fait l’accompagnement de centaines d’entreprises dans les 25 dernières années. Le mandat du stagiaire est important afin de poser un regard canadien sur le marché et sur les besoins des entreprises. Il nous permettra d’effectuer la priorisation des secteurs/provinces et d’établir une stratégie d’affaires. Ecocert Canada pourra ainsi se doter d’une stratégie de déploiement de cette nouvelle activité afin de contribuer à un essor de la compagnie dès 2021 dans ce domaine, qui permettra de compenser la réduction des activités causée par la pandémie.

Like most communities Saint John has a significant number of organizations , businesses, agencies, volunteers and levels of government all coping with covid 19 in the now,
near and the far. While all well intended the citizens, employees, businesses- large and small, the government employees, the volunteers, the out of work, do not have a clear understanding of where to go for help . For example in the economic pillar there are numerous govt agencies that are all working hard in a reactive mode resulting in frustration, confusion, increased cost and duplication.
