Targeting SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) methyltransferases (nsp14 and nsp10-nsp16 complex) toward developing small molecule antiviral therapeutics – Part 2

COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to standstill with more than 55 million people infected to-date and more than 1.34 million mortality so far. It has literally brought the health care systems in many countries to the breaking point, if not beyond. The economic consequences have been devastating with millions of people out of work. We are taking a novel approach by focusing on two SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) methyltransferases that are essential for viral replication. Both enzymes (nsp14 and nsp16) are druggable. Therefore, identifying potent inhibitor of these two proteins could be used in providing new therapeutics for COVID-19. In addition, because these proteins are highly similar in other coronaviruses such as SARS (SARS-Cov) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), and many other coronaviruses currently infecting animals, the same drugs likely could be effective in treatment of other current coronavirus infections, and those possibly infecting humans in future.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Swarm Collaboration for Weed Control in Field Crops

Precision.ai is building solutions to minimize chemical consumption while maintaining weed control through Intelligent UAV based application. Precision.ai has working survey drones that can fly a field, capture images and use AI to map weeds to be sprayed later. Precision.ai also has “See & spray” drones that can fly a field, identify weeds and spray them. We now need to scale our capabilities through drone swarming. The required speed and coverage will require an autonomous and collaborative swarm of drones (or a combination of more capable drones and/or more efficient field coverage). This includes smart autonomous adaptive path planning for the multi-UAV swarm. This includes improved (optimized) field coverage. We need growers to be able to configure missions to optimize coverage, minimize chemical use, minimize mission time and optimize weed suppression based on their crop and field scenarios. We expect field size to mean that drones will need to autonomously reload and recharge at points in their missions. This will likely require other agents in the swarm to adapt their flight / spray paths for complete coverage.

Development of a process for furfural production in an Integrated Forest Biorefinery

An integrated biorefinery for furfural production is an opportunity for Kraft pulp mills to create value from hemicellulose, a class of wood component that is currently burnt for energy. Furfural is one of the top bio-products with the potential to replace many industrial organic compounds that are currently produced from crude oil revenue. The objective of this work is to develop an optimized biorefinery process that can be best integrated into a Kraft pul~” mill. “The approach taken consists of two stages: (I) conceptual design of a process using process simulation (II) the experimental validation of its process steps. The second stage is the objective of this internship. The experimentally validated process simulation will be used to develop and propose a biotefinery implementation strategy that will have a minimal effect on the energy and material balance of the host mill.

Development of a software module for integrity analysis of subsea pipelines facing ice-induced geohazards

The Arctic Region is considered an extreme environment for natural resources extraction. One potential threat to an Offshore Pipeline is the constant movement of ice based structures, such as icebergs and ice ridges. The project is focused on developing a numerical methodology to simulate the effects of ice gouging/ ice scouring on buried pipelines. The developed tool will incorporate all the latest advances in terms of soil properties and sophisticated interactions modeling between ice, soil and pipeline. The developed numerical tool will serve as a test platform for the numerous parameters that rule the phenomenon and as a paradigm for simplified models. The partner organization will be responsible for developing this research, under the supervision of the academic organization. The benefits will include research funding for the members of the partner organization and opportunity to work in the Offshore industry.

Anaerobic biodegradation of complex aromatic pollutants by indigenous microbes from a contaminated site in Brazil

This four-month research project proposal aims to contribute to bioremediation projects carried out by the partner industry by evaluating the biodegradability of some halogenated aromatic compounds, such as dichloroaniline (DCA), and chloroaniline (CA), present in a contaminated site. Through some biodegradability tests, we will verify and better understand how native microbes from the mentioned site degrade those compounds in the absence of oxygen, as it occurs in deep soil layers. The microbial community will be evaluated and identified during the research period, in order to understand which microbes are responsible for the various degradation processes. These results will guide the remediation projects that are planned and implemented by the industry.

Electronic Data Capture in the Care of Chronic Pain: Identifying Barriers and Improving Usability

Chronic pain is a widespread disorder, leading to devastating personal and financial costs for patients and the Canadian healthcare system. As such, there is a need to identify factors associated with improved pain care. Previous research suggests that, although limited in practice, the use of technology to electronically collect patient data may allow for more effective and complete patient care. The purpose of this project is to evaluate a newly developed electronic platform (i.e., Thrive Health) for the assessment of chronic pain. Specifically, Study 1 will use a detailed survey to assess barriers perceived by physicians in the care of chronic pain, as well as their perceptions of electronic platforms used to collect patient-data. Study 2 will pilot the platform at a local pain clinic and evaluate patient feedback. Findings from these studies will be used to optimize the Thrive Health platform and improve chronic pain care.

Design of biodegradable bioplastics utilizing hemp

In last few year, due to bad impression, single used plastics has received huge attention from scientist, environmentalist and attentive people from different part of the world. Since only a fraction of these plastics are recycled or repurposed, due to numerous reasons, municipal and industrial waste contain a large portion as plastics. As Canada is planning to put a ban on single used plastics by the end of 2021, putting an effort to replace these plastics with bio-based, compostable, and biodegradable plastics could be a potential solution. Proposed work targets to develop a bio-derived, cost effective, and biodegradable packaging and containment material by incorporating waste hemp residues in a co-blend polymer derived from agriculture and microorganism. By this work, our industry partner CTK is aiming to extend its influence on the beauty industry by publishing papers in collaboration with universities, and to expand its business in Canada.

Enhanced Modelling of Exfiltration Events in Sun Life Cybersecurity Data

Theft or loss of sensitive data is a growing concern for companies who may suffer losses of consumer confidence, market valuation and intellectual property when large amounts of data are stolen. In this research project we will use an enhanced “screen and review” approach to combating exfiltration in a large data set of activity logs within a large corporate network. We will create realistic simulations of data theft events that can be used as a basis for machine learning, and for the design and prototyping of a system where human experts work with AI algorithms to detect and prevent data theft. We will also build visualization and browsing tools that make it easier for people to judge whether or not observed data access activity indicates malicious intent. Our goal will continue to be the development of a state-of-the-art system for monitoring and reporting possible exfiltration events as they happen.

Supporting Canadian families: A national review of the F&ST program

Family Service Canada (FSC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to building healthy families. One program delivered by FSC, called Family & Schools Together, has been shown to help families become more involved in their children’s education and support student’s learning but it has not yet been researched in Canada. To find out if this program is helpful for Canadian families, we will be interviewing FSC staff, families, children, and teachers across five FSC sites to determine whether or not they feel the F&ST program is effective. We will also research other parent programs that are similar to F&ST to determine if there is a program out there that may be a better fit for Canadian families. Overall, this project will inform FSC’s programming decisions to ensure that Canadian families are receiving the best possible support for their children.
