High-heat-flux microprocessor cooling using microgaps

Just as every computer needs a processor, every processor needs a cooling system. Without one, the significant heat generated by the processor will overheat the system. As time has advanced, this heating issue has only become more critical, thus necessitating the advent of more effective cooling solutions. Microgaps, which pass coolant through, as the name suggests, a microscale gap, are uniquely suited to meet the ever-increasing cooling demands of modern processors. Moreover, they are capable of doing so in a compact and reliable manner. The research project being proposed would investigate various alterations to the typical straight channel microgap geometry in an attempt to advance the maximum performance of this technology. The success of this pursuit would provide the partner organization with an improvement over their current processor cooling technology, and thus a competitive advantage in the high-performance computing market.

Characterization of Free/Bound Water of Mature Fine Tailings Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Oil sand tailings could take ages to naturally dewater enough to be reclaimed. Finding ways to accelerate dewatering fluid tailings is crucial to improving overall reclamation planning and performance. The goal of the proposed project is to establish a new thermoanalytical technique for quantification and analysis of free and bound water contents in both individual MFT clays and flocs using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). These techniques will be beneficial in the study of the effectiveness of different concentrations of flocculant, coagulant or a mixture of both on the tailings settling rates. A higher grade of effectiveness of these substances results in a larger amount of water that could be reincorporated immediately into the recovery process. This work will also contribute to the design of novel water-soluble polymer compositions to achieve rapid flocculation and dewatering, therefore to increase the efficiency of tailings separation.

Truck Safety Survey

Fleetmetrica is a new business startup that offers an innovative and patent-pending technology called SafetyMonitor for monitoring and controlling fleet safety of large commercial vehicles. Fleetmetrica has achieved success with initial fleets, including improved driver habits using their product and are interested in formally quantifying the effectiveness of their technology. Fleetmetrica is also interested in testing their product in conjunction with a fuel efficiency training program called SmartDriver offered by Natural Resources Canada to assess combined benefits of these technologies. The project will include designing the setup of the experiment, counselling the partner on testing guidelines, and analyzing and reporting on the results. It will examine effectiveness of the SafetyMonitor and SmartDriver technologies on fleet safety and fuel consumption. Fleets participating in the testing will be given the opportunity to expand the use of these technologies to the remainder of their fleet following the analysis.

Development of Electronically Tunable and Fixed Filters for TVWS and 5G Wireless Systems

TV Whitespace (TVWS) designates the inactive or unused space between TV channels actively used in UHF and VHF spectrum :470 MHz to 700 MHz. The TVWS band performs best in the most rural service areas. This is due to the characteristics of TVWS, and how it’s shared with powerful analog TV stations Such TV transmitters can have up to hundreds of kilowatts of transmit power creating strong interference. Due to spectrum sharing with these powerful analog TV stations the reliability of wireless communications in TVWS is affected. Tunable receive channel filters are needed to provide enough rejection to deal with the interfering signals. The purpose of this project is to develop an electronically tunable band-pass filter that can be inserted between the antenna and the receiver of a TVWS system. The industrial sponsor of this project is Redline Communication. The project will provide training to two PhD graduate students.

Timber-based DfMA Façade Components for Factory-in-a-Box(FIAB) based DM technologies

Digital Manufacturing is expensive due to the initial capital costs related to the digitally able machines and robots. This entails that the segment of the construction sector that is rapidly adopting these technologies to meet the productivity and ecological goals of the Construction Sector is largely restricted to large businesses – large Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) firms. More importantly, it entails that the Small Medium Enterprises (SME) are unable / unwilling to participate in the rapidly digitizing economy. This forms the driving motivation behind the proposed research: Timber-based DfMA Façade Components for Factory-in-a-Box (FIAB) based DM technologies adapted to meet the needs of the SME sector in construction.

Predicting demand and inventory shortages for better inventory management in health care institutions

This project aims to predict demand and inventory shortages for better inventory management in health care institutions. This will initially allow for a reduction in the expenses generated by emergency orders placed during a stock shortage. Indeed, it will be possible for the establishment to order a larger quantity of the product from the supplier or to place an order with another supplier. In a second step, placing orders at the right time based on demand forecasting will reduce out-of-stock situations but also optimize the minimum and maximum quantities in inventory.
Better inventory management through greater proactivity indirectly provides peace of mind for the staff and therefore for the patient being cared for.
