Techno-economic Evaluation of Electric Energy Storage Options toImprove the Commerciality of Suncor’s Wind Farms

In recent years, many energy producers have developed wind farms in Alberta due to their economic
and environmental advantages. One of the most significant challenges of wind farms is that wind is an
intermittent resource that is uncontrollable and difficult to predict. As such, wind developers are
looking to develop electric energy storage (EES) systems to store energy when supply exceeds
demand, and to generate electricity from stored energy to meet demand when the wind is producing
insufficient electricity. Through this research project, Suncor and the intern will consider various EES
technology options and evaluate them in the context of Suncor’s operations in an attempt to identify
optimal electricity storage solutions to improve the commerciality of wind farms and their ability to
provide a consistent power supply. The project will involve market and technical analyses, followed by
selecting the most attractive technologies and running profit scenarios to evaluate the potential for
increasing revenues in the Alberta electricity market. Social and…TOBECONT’D.

Development and Optimization of Fish Hydrolysate Fertilizer Formulation

The fish processing industry produces a high level of fish waste (head, bones, skin, fins, etc.) which is often discarded in landfills. This underutilized biomass waste stream has potential to be upgraded through hydrolysis to be used an organic fertilizer. Eberts Fur Farm Inc. currently obtains fish waste from a local food supplier to use in their animal feed formulation. They are now looking to diversify their business with the production of organic fish-based liquid fertilizer in order to fulfill Chatham-Kent’s demand for a regional and organic supplier of fertilizer solutions. The main objective of this project is to develop and optimize the formulation and production of fish hydrolysate fertilizer. Eberts has already experimented with hydrolyzing fish waste to fertilizer, but needs help in optimizing the process, especially in light of the observation that their three different fish feedstocks react differently to the hydrolysis process.

Development and Testing of an Augmented Reality First Aid Training Program

The objective of this project is to develop and test a first aid training program using Augmented Reality (AR), a technology that superimposes computer-generated animations on a user’s view of the real world, in the context of lifesaving education. Education is an industry that is currently being transformed using the latest technologies. In the advancing healthcare industry, the uses of such technologies as AR, medical animation, online learning, and simulation are quickly becoming the standard for delivering accessible, interactive, and high-quality training. PULSE Lifesaving Inc. is working in collaboration with applied research partners Mohawk College and McMaster University to develop a prototype first aid program using AR for deployment and product testing.

Customer Experience Coordinator

With COVID-19, a number of challenges have surfaced for landlords. There have been numerous rent relief programs and new policies surrounding rent abatement and supplementation to assist tenants, meaning increased contact and need for research on the landlord’s behalf. We are seeing increased vacancy in our portfolio as well as slower lease-up of vacant spaces. Furthermore, COVID-19 has introduced some logistical challenges to the lease up of residential space.
Retention of our renters and leasing vacant space to new renters is key to our continued survival as a small property management firm; the Mitacs internship student will focus on improving our service interactions with both existing and potential renters, which is key to ensuring their continued satisfaction.
