Dissolvable Glass Technology

The goal of the Dissolvable Glass Technology research project is to develop new glass technologies and products to reduce the cost and environmental impact in the utility, forestry, and oil and gas sectors. It has been said that we are ‘entering the age of glass’, and we aim to explore the numerous and varied possibilities where dissolvable glasses can be utilized. However, to achieve these glass technologies, fundamental glass research must be performed in three key areas: mechanical properties, thermal behaviour and dissolution behaviour. Once completed, the product suite generated from the Dissolvable Glass Technology research project will enhance the durability of engineered wood products against mold, decay, termites. It will increase the life expectancy of wood assets, lower the carbon emissions and reduce costs in oil and gas production as well as increasing efficacy in reforestation and crop production. The successful development and commercialization of these products will encourage further technical glass development in key sectors in Alberta and be one necessary step in the establishment of fundamental glass research facilities at the University of Alberta; this partnership will benefit both sides, academic and industrial, by advancing glass research in Western Canada.

Project Horizon is a deep strategic consulting dive into these opportunities to help Zoocasa analyze the short and long term requirements and models that will scale and operate best. Investigating Intercultural Skills Development and Needs Assessment of Medium and Large Businesses in Ontario

This project investigates barriers, facilitators, and experiences related to intercultural skills development training and implementation in the workplace. The project involves the examination of current theories and practices of intercultural skills development, as well as industry partners’ perceptions and experiences of diversity in the workplace and intercultural skills training. The research intends to determine how behavior and attitudes toward diversity in the workplace can become more open and inclusive. This project involves a partnership between the Cross Cultural Learner Centre, the Achievement Centre, and the University of Western Ontario. The research will be carried out in London, Toronto and Kitchener, Ontario. The research will use multiple methods including in-depth interviews, focus groups, social media analysis, and an online survey. The output of the project will be case studies, training manuals, and workshops in intercultural skills development that can be used by the Cross Cultural Learner Centre and the Achievement Centre.

Vog App Developers – Project Coordinator

Business has picked up since COVID began, but it is necessary for VOG to continue to build the sales pipeline to ensure long term viability. A large part of this funnel is from several projects being teed up by our largest financial client. These projects are crucial to Vog’s continued success as they would not be impacted by a second round of COVID. Our strategy going forward is to take on as many projects as possible in case some drop off in a potential second wave. This intern will provide bench strength for one of our largest clients allowing our other staff to focus on smaller clients. At the end of the internship the student will not only gain significant skills in project coordination of large projects, but gain experience in technology and financial systems. These are highly sought after skills in Canada and will no doubt be leveraged by the student’s future employers. The projects the student will work on will streamline many banking processes and systems for a large financial services company.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Heat Transfer in CVD Coated Carbide Tools

Quantitative assessment of the thermal role and wear characteristics of multi-layer coatings in cutting
tools is approached through the analysis of mechanical contact problem at the tool-chip interface and
the constriction resistance phenomenon. The micro-contact configuration on the surface asperity level
and the macro-contact configuration (contact pressure distribution and the size of the adhesion and
sliding zones) are to be analyzed. The dependence of the workpiece rotational speed and size on the
convective-radiant coefficient of heat transfer is to be determined. Using FE simulation, the correlation
between the contact pressure and the thermal contact resistance of uncoated and multi-layer coated
tools are to be established and validated. The effects of the composition of the coating material (a.A120
3, Ti(C,N», as well as its thickness, texture, crystal orientation and coating architecture are to be
investigated. The thermal interaction and heat redistribution in the workpiece-chip-tool system is also
to be examined.

COVID-19 has required significant adaptations to the Partner Organization’s regular business operations and comes at a time when its future is less clear as the CEO seeks an exit strategy. Recommendations on both how to manage a strategic reexamination of its business functions, as well as possible exit strategies will be provided in the Capstone Project Report to the CEO. However, this Mitacs opportunity will allow me to further assist in carrying out these initiatives. This will also be an invaluable experience for my future career. It also allows me to apply my Business Management skills acquired at the Smith School of Business in assisting a Canadian CEO who is looking to repatriate an overseas business operation to Canada, in a severely turbulent economic environment and without any other government or social assistance on which she can count. This internship will be completed part-time while completing my second year of Graduate Studies at Queen’s University, as well as over the Summer months when there are no courses.

Strategies for Mitigation and Management of Water Risks in Mining

Mining companies and their investors face a range of business risks stemming from water issues. This research develops new tools and frameworks to improve water management and ultimately reduce water-related risks. The work will include advancement of water risk assessment tools for the mining sector, development of new approaches for water balance modelling, and an examination of response options for mitigating local-level water risks. At two case study sites, alternative response options will be analyzed through a unique combination of multi-criteria analysis and hydro-economic analysis. The work will also consider approaches for improving the resilience of mine water systems to future climate variability.

Interactive Image Segmentation for the DiyoramaMobile Engine

Hololabs Studio Inc. is developing a mobile platform called Diyorama, which enables users to arrange
images into interactive 3-~ scenes with an aesthetic similar to paper craft and collage art. Users can
include images from their photo libraries, social networks, or image search results in order to create
customized playable scenes from existing content. The research project adds the ability to
interactively extract foreground objects from unwanted background imagery in order to provide useful
assets for building one’s scene. Computer vision techniques ranging from active contours to graph cut
algorithms will be explored to see which is most effective for mobile platforms and user tests will be
performed to ensure that the interaction is manageable in mobile environments, where small screens
and multitouch input serve as the primary interface.
