Evaluation of performance characteristics and applications for foam concrete materials

Foamed concrete is a low-density product, created by blending a cement paste with a foaming agent. The foam is stable during the set-up of the concrete, resulting in fine, evenly distributed voids within the concrete matrix.
In addition to its low density, properties of foam concrete include pumpability as a fresh concrete mix; and sound absorption and thermal resistance (relative to standard concrete) when cast. Its characteristics indicate possible commercial exploitation of the material in a wide variety of applications and markets, in uses as diverse as interior acoustic demising walls or roadside sound barriers; precast applications such as unit pavers, concrete masonry units, and wall or roof panels; porous paving; low-density backfill in mining; or structural fill under roadways and building foundations. Advantages of foam concrete continue to be recognized, although the material is not yet widely used in Canada. TO BE CONT’D

Innovative Financing for Energy Access – The Role of Finance and Energy Service Companies in Promoting Energy Development

The proposed postdoctoral research focuses on addressing the challenges associated with energy access in developing countries as well as promoting energy-independent communities in Canada in a bid to promote sustainable development. The study would investigate a consortium-like financing model for small and medium scale renewable energy projects in which energy service companies are financed by a number of investors to in order to reduce the investment risks. OCEC would benefit from the research by using the findings from the study to refine its approach to developing community-scale renewable energy projects and adopting new methods for financing its projects in Canada. The research would also expose OCEC to the nature of renewable energy project development in developing African countries in need of stable modern electricity. This understanding would contribute to inform the business models OCEC may adopt when planning and developing community-scale renewable energy projects across Africa, in the near future.

Real-time multi-class object recognition for municipal waste collection

The use of garbage trucks with “robot arms” for municipal waste collection is becoming more and more common in Ontario and across North America. However, these “robots” have very little capability. In our collaboration with Waterloo Controls, we are working to automate the process of garbage collection. Rather than requiring the operator to acquire the truck, then steer the robot arm to pick up the bin, we are working to add automatic capability. With our proposed solution, the system will automatically find the bin, automatically determine if it is safe to collect it (ie: there are no people or pets in the way), then automatically pick up the bin and dump it, with no more effort on the driver’s part than the push of a button. Performance Evaluation of Timber I-Joists with Web Holes and Flange Notches – Experimental and Numerical Study

I-joists are composite timber beams mainly used in roof and flooring systems. They consist of oriented strand board (OSB) webs and timber flanges. For post-construction purposes, these beams are often drilled in the web or notched through the flange in order to pass the electrical/mechanical facilities through the openings. This can result in a significantly lower load-carrying capacity for these important elements. This study investigates the performance of I-joists with web holes and flange notches through experimental and numerical approaches. First, OSB and timber will be tested experimentally to develop their material constitutive models. S-FRAME finite element (FE) software will then be used to create a detailed FE model to predict the load-carrying capacity of I-joists. The model will be validated against data from full-scale experiments on selected I-joists. TO BE CONT’D

Étude du lien entre la reproduction des oiseaux et l’entomofaune terrestre et aquatique de la forêt d’enseignement et de recherche Macpès

La Corporation de la forêt d’enseignement et de recherche Macpès est un organisme qui a pour mandat d’assurer la gestion et la promotion d’un territoire forestier dédié à l’enseignement et à la recherche. En 2015, un suivi de l’entomofaune a été débuté sur ce territoire, et la Corporation souhaite pérenniser ce suivi afin d’obtenir des données sur la présence des insectes ravageurs sur son territoire. En s’associant à l’UQAR, par l’entremise d’un investissement dans quatre stages Mitacs sur deux ans, elle souhaite mettre en place une collaboration profitable aux deux parties (recherche universitaire, suivi des insectes ravageurs) essentielle à la planification des activités forestières.

Intelligent surveillance for event detection

We aim to develop a video surveillance system that detects and reports events of interest to users. Traditional way is to use RGB cameras to operate in constantly and evenly illuminated areas to detect simple events. The challenge is that visual characteristics of an unconstrained scene are unstable due to illumination variations. In this project, by using RGB-D cameras, 3D position information of humans can be obtained, which is robust and insensitive to the illumination variations. Event detection is realized by machine learning models using human joint positions as features, since joint positions are suitable for event classification. An intelligent and robust real-time event detection system is to be developed in this project.

Molten Salt Reactor Dynamics Analysis Phase 1

This project seeks to understand how a next-generation nuclear reactor, a molten salt reactor, behaves under various conditions. Particular attention is paid to aspects of the reactor’s performance that could have an impact on its safe operation. This research focuses on how the various properties of the reactor evolve in time after a change to the reactor’s operating configuration is made. The analysis is done using state-of-the-art computer codes and a multi-physics approach that model both the nuclear and thermal behaviour of the reactor.

Modeling and optimisation of woven composite hydraulic tubes, to reduce in-service defects and failures

Sanexen Environmental Services Inc. is a Quebec-based industrial partner, specializing in the environmental management of contaminated site remediation and water main rehabilitation. Over the past 30 years, the company has developed a profound expertise, as well as technologies to meet the needs of private and public organizations facing various environmental issues. Currently, Sanexen in collaboration with Neidner Inc., is developing a strong supply chain to manufacture the next generation of woven composite tubing systems that can be deployed in any terrain, and used in a range of extreme operating conditions. However, potential in-situ failure modes of such composite systems, such as snaking and fibre-decoupling, can led to costly service deficiencies and significantly hamper the tasks of workers on-site. The present partnership between the University and Industry teams will allow to properly characterise the root of these failures and develop a design and manufacturing optimisation tool to mitigate the material defects.

Intégration de biohuiles dans des bitumes

Afin d’améliorer son impact environnemental, nos partenaires souhaite remplacer une partie de ces produits d’origines pétrolières par un matériel innovant issus du produit de la recherche de l’UQTR. Ce produit, la bio-huile pyrolytique, est obtenue par pyrolyse de résidus forestiers de la forêt de La tuque. C’est-à-dire par combustion en absence d’oxygène. Le produit formé possède d’intéressantes propriétés qui seront évalués par les chercheurs, afin d’améliorer au maximum la qualité de ces huiles et leur capacité à être utilisé dans les produits du partenaire. L’intérêt du projet est majeur pour les différents acteurs, renouvellement économique pour la ville de La Tuque, développement d’expertise pour l’UQTR, et avantage stratégique et contribution environnemental pour le partenaire industriel.

Développer et renforcer les outils d’achat responsable en vue de réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES) et d’augmenter les bénéfices socioéconomiques sur le territoire canadien

Le Québec, tout autant que le Canada, s’est engagé sur le plan de la lutte contre les changements climatiques par la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), et ce par un effort de réaliser des achats plus responsables. Ce projet s’inscrit dans cette volonté de changement et vise tout particulièrement la réduction des émissions de GES au Québec et au Canada, le renforcement des achats auprès du secteur de l’économie sociale, le calcul des coûts et la mesure des bénéfices de l’achat responsable. Les outils qui seront développés permettront des avancées en matière de réduction de GES et économie sociale. Le partenaire sera mieux positionné afin de mobiliser de nouveaux acteurs et d’apporter une plus-value auprès des organisations canadiennes. Ce travail permettra également de mieux positionner l’organisme en lien avec les objectifs et les actions gouvernementales.

Advanced design of an inverter for a new application in a telecom dc microgrid

Rapid growth of renewable energy generation and DC loads as electric vehicles and consumer electronics results in the proliferation of DC microgrids. DC microgrids are small electrical grids where energy sources and loads are connected to a main energy distribution power line using power converters. A particular example of the use of DC microgrids can be found in the telecommunications infrastructure, which constantly evolves and expands incorporating new applications.
The emergence of new applications requires to re-design the current power converters’ technology, and sometimes boosts the application of novel techniques, in order to fulfill with the new requirements.
In this project a prototype of a of a particular power converter for an original application in a telecom dc microgrid will be designed and developed. The project will require to address a number of critical points, such as understanding the new specifications, and dealing with a number of new design challenges.
