TRLUP – Automotive Hand Controls for Disabled Drivers

For disabled people to be enabled to drive they need the use of assistive technology. Between Canada and the US there are 47.3 million people who have disabilities related to lost leg functioning. 60% of these people use adaptive devices to drive. The technology that exists in North America requires the driver to have one hand off of the steering wheel at all times. The product I am currently working on is an acceleration and braking system that allows the driver to maintain two hands on the steering wheel at almost all times. My product places the accelerator control either on the back or the front of the wheel, based on space in the vehicle as well as the consumer’s personal preference. The brake is placed very close to the steering wheel in a position that allows the driver to interact with it while having both hands on the wheel during normal braking situations, with one hand having to come off the wheel only during emergency braking. This technology will allow for better vehicle control, a more enjoyable and less taxing driving experience, as well as most importantly improved safety for the driver, passengers and other road occupants. The stage of the product is currently a proof of concept prototype that can display how the device will function and the ergonomic benefits of the design. My primary goal through this internship would be to create a fully functioning prototype that can be attached to a vehicle and used to drive. Alongside the development of the technology I would like to focus on intellectual property, and a plan to have the devices manufactured.

TRLUP – Conserve Tree

This project will support the business and market development of Conserve Tree, an innovative retrofit medical device designed to optimize oxygen therapy management in hospitals. The intern will help the company identify its target market, gather feedback from hospitals, and develop a business plan to support product launch across Canada and internationally. This work will help advance the device from early prototype to a market-ready solution that improves patient safety, reduces healthcare costs, and promotes environmental sustainability. The project also contributes to Canada’s broader goals of innovation and climate resilience, while building skills and leadership capacity in health technology innovation.

TRLUP – MoPanning Audio Visualizer

The primary goal of this project is to develop MoPanning—a perceptually inspired, real-time stereo audio visualizer that can serve as a tool for music production, research, and recreational use. This visualizer will not only assist users in understanding the spatial characteristics of stereo signals but will also provide aesthetic, reactive visualizations suitable for use as a backdrop in live music performances.

Predicting the State of Overhead Line Components for Multiple Hazard Exposures

The research problem is to model the deterioration of conductors and to predict their service life as a function of exposure to humidity, chlorides and SO2. The model will be validated by analyzing 300 sites with data on the residual thickness of zinc. A feature-dependent Markov model will be fitted to estimate the residual life of conductors.

TRLUP – AI-Driven Biomass Intelligence: Unlocking High-Value Applications from Waste

Biomass, derived from a wide array of organic materials including agricultural residues (e.g., crop stalks, leaves, and fruit peels) and forestry residues (e.g., stumps, branches, and leaves), offers a scalable and renewable feedstock for developing sustainable bio-based products across the energy, materials, and environmental sectors. Through thermochemical conversion techniques, value-added
products such as biochar, bio-oil, and syngas can be generated from organic waste. These products have shown promising applications in areas such as contaminant adsorption and soil remediation. Developing suitable products for new applications or specific biomass types often requires long cycles of trial-and-error experimentation due to the complexity and variability of feedstocks and processing conditions. As a result, the efficient and targeted utilization of biomass remains a significant challenge. To address this, the project leverages cutting-edge AI techniques, particularly large language models, to develop a biomass-specific knowledge base aimed at identifying high-value utilization pathways and expanding viable application scenarios. This project seeks to revolutionize biomass utilization by building an intelligent knowledge system for biomass research and application through large language models. The primary objective is commercialization by embedding this intelligent system into digital tools or platforms that support biomass product recommendation, scenario-specific planning, and decision-making for industrial partners.

Open-source Electrodermal Activity Toolkit for Artistic Biofeedback

This project aims to make emotional biofeedback technology more accessible to artists by developing open-source tools for measuring electrodermal activity (EDA). EDA reflects emotional and physiological responses and can be observed through changes in skin conductance. By transforming this signal into easy-to-use indicators, we seek to enable artists to create interactive performances, installations, and digital media that respond to emotional activity in real time. The research will take place at the Société des arts technologiques [SAT] in Montreal and will build on existing tools such as the BioSynth instrument, the BioData library, and Ossia Score, a free, open-source composition software. This work will benefit the SAT by expanding the functionality and user-base of its opensource ecosystem, including Ossia Score, while fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and enriching Montreal’s digital arts scene. More broadly, it will help strengthen Montreal’s creative technology sector by making emotional sensing tools more available to artists and creative technologists.
