IMPACT (IMproved Pulmonary repair with Advanced Cell Therapy) for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

When people become critically ill, such as during severe infection, their lungs often fail – this is termed “Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome” (ARDS). ARDS is common, and often fatal. There is no drug therapy for ARDS and new therapies are urgently required. Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) from bone marrow offer significant hope for ARDS, and early research findings are promising. An alternative source of these cells is the tissue around the blood vessels of the umbilical cord – these umbilical cord MSCs offer potential advantages over bone marrow MSCs, including ease of isolation and enhanced therapeutic effect. Our partner organization, Tissue Regeneration Therapeutics, has developed a method for extraction of these cells. This project aims to assess the efficacy of these cells in laboratory and animal models that mimic some of the features of ARDS. In addition, this project aims to optimize the therapeutic effect of these cells by activating them to enhance their reparative potential.

Canadian Scientist Speakers Network (CSSN)

Building on the success of version 1.0, the Canadian Scientist Network (CSN) 2.0 project aims to significantly impact the national landscape of science in Canada by amplifying the voices and profiles of diverse Canadian scientists. Under the leadership of Dr. Imogen Coe, a recognized authority in the field of inclusive excellence in science, this project seeks to elevate the visibility and accessibility of underrepresented scientists and engineers across the country.
Dr. Coe, in collaboration with a team of interns from a partnering academic institution and academic partners Dr. Mustafiz and Dr. Borden, will apply an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and accessibility lens to the development of the CSN platform. The platform will serve as a dynamic resource for highlighting diverse Canadian scientist speakers, providing them with opportunities to share their expertise on a broader scale.
The enhanced CSN platform will be instrumental in facilitating connections between these experts and a range of organizations seeking diverse perspectives in science and engineering. This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and representative national scientific community, ensuring that the voices of all Canadian scientists are heard and valued.

Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring via contact lens platform

Medella Health is developing contact lenses that continuously detect blood glucose levels to better manage diabetes and improve the quality of life for diabetic patients. Patients have a difficult time monitoring and maintaining their blood glucose levels because current systems are invasive, discontinuous and do not generate the continuous feedback necessary for patients to take immediate action. This mismanagement can lead to serious immediate effects (such as seizures, fainting) and long-term effects (such as kidney failure, cardiovascular diseases and blindness), thus significantly increasing costs for the healthcare system. The IT system in the mobile device will be able to run data analytics on blood glucose data, transfer information to health care providers and most importantly, send push notifications to patients in a state of diabetic emergency (i.e. if blood glucose levels reaches a certain threshold).

Business Analysis for Advocacy-focused, AI-Enabled, Stakeholder Relationship Management System

Legislation is a messy process, with important information generally not available to all stakeholders, a number of critical influencers and processes that are manual, and indeed “heroic” efforts required to get anything significant done. Gnowit (the partner organization) makes this much easier by tracking millions of sources of policy, legislative, regulatory and media information and automatically generating briefing for regulatory analysis and public affairs experts. However, monitoring is only one part of the process, and the partner organization would like to bring a higher level of automation to the process via the provision of central systems of records and standardized workflows. The goal of this project is to essentially design, prototype and test an advocacy focused stakeholder relationship management system, and the Interns will be tasked to carry out business analyst requirement gathering, working with real-life clients to determine key information artefacts that are critical to lobbying success, and then propose how automation and artificial intelligence can be used to support these efforts. These information artefacts can include entities such as Government/academic/trade/non-profit/media organizations, key representatives of these organization, legislation, compliance requirements, policy changes, stakeholder positions, and lobbying activities. The Intern will work with the partner organization’s team to propose automation that can capture, store and report on this information (via media monitoring, Government policy monitoring, legislative + regulation monitoring, email client integration, etc) to bring the same efficiency to GR and advocacy focused firms, that Customer relationship management (CRM) platforms have brought to sales and business development focused organizations. The Intern will need to be an expert in both business analytics as well having a deep understanding of the software engineering process to be able to carry out the required customer interviews, customer validation, requirements documentation work as well as developing an early prototype.
