The Functional Impairment Rating Scale (FIRS): A novel performance-based measure of ADLs

This research project centers on developing the Functional Impairment Rating Scale (FIRS), a new tool to better assess how people with neurological and mental health disorders can complete everyday tasks. Traditional assessment methods often rely on patients’ descriptions of their abilities or clinicians observations, which can miss important details. The FIRS aims to address this by offering a more precise, action-based assessment that combines observation and rating. It uses a detailed rating system to measure a person’s abilities in everyday tasks and to understand the specific challenges they face. The process involves thorough testing and refinement to ensure the tool’s reliability. The end goal is to improve how health professionals diagnose conditions, plan out treatments, and provide care that fully meets patients’ needs. For the partner organization, this tool will be invaluable in offering a clearer understanding of their patients, leading to better, more personalized care.

Continued Development of a Mobile Application

Ksalsuti creates materials and programming to improve the social and emotional wellness of children and youth. Ksalsuti has published its first three books from the Turtle Island Series in three languages. Each book contains culturally appropriate material that promotes wellness in children. Ksalsuti is experiencing growth and also requires additional capacity. Ksalsuti hired an intern in the spring of 2023 to create a mobile application to extend the exposure of its newly published books. A second intern in the fall and winter semesters 2023-24 further improved its functionality, design, and user interface. The app would greatly benefit from another co-op student who can further implement a kid-friendly interface as the project evolves, fully implement the app into the app store and Google Play store, and expand the gamification of the app.

As such, the ultimate goal of this ambitious collaboration will be to: Evaluate the technology and supply chain readiness of actual OLED and other emerging display technologies. Assess their potential for cockpit (critical) and cabin (passenger-level) aeronautics and train applications. Propose a ruggedization and certification strategy to potentially allow their integration at both levels, including the identification of potential suppliers Evaluate and propose recommendations to complete the path to certification for cockpit & cabin applications in aircrafts and trains.

Un ChatBot pour le centre d’études acadiennes Anselme-Chiasson (CEAAC)

Le Centre d’études acadiennes Anselme-Chiasson (CEAAC) a pour mission de rassembler et de préserver le patrimoine documentaire acadien, tout en facilitant son accès à la communauté universitaire, aux chercheurs et au grand public. Cependant, le CEAAC rencontre des défis tels que la centralisation des services, les obstacles liés à la littératie et à l’âge, ainsi que la complexité des requêtes et l’accès limité au public. Notre projet de création de ChatAcadien explore des solutions en introduisant un outil nommé ChatAcadien pour rendre les archives acadiennes plus accessibles, faciliter la consultation des archivistes et permettre aux utilisateurs d’effectuer des recherches autonomes à distance. En combinant ces aspects, le projet vise à rendre les archives acadiennes plus accessibles, tout en préservant et en promouvant la richesse de la culture et de l’histoire acadiennes.

In 1985 a fictional avatar named Max Headroom became a common site in the entertainment industry as a digital presenter. This has evolved into a common commercial online entity known as a chatbot. The level of sophistication of these bots varies from company to company. Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology for Digital Storage and Preservation Systems: A Prototype Runway for 221A

Vancouver non-profit 221A is interested in using decentralized ledger technology (DLT) to offer secure, reliable, context preserving, cost-efficient, and carbon-neutral permanent storage services for digital cultural work. This research project will identify a storage solution for 221A that will preserve digital assets in the long term. Final outputs include a whitepaper and presentation deck featuring an analysis of existing blockchains and DLT-based storage services, analysis of stakeholder survey data, systems architecture map, basic wireframe, and production roadmap, all to support the development of a functional prototype. Optimally, the proposed solution will scale to serve local and national arts and cultural heritage organizations.
