A socio-ecological approach to understanding determinants of homelessness in Prince Albert: A community-based research approach

This project explores the determinants of homelessness in Prince Albert (PA) using a community-based research approach. The aim is to understand the needs of people experiencing homelessness in the city, the impact of homelessness, the community assumptions about homelessness, and the opportunities and barriers to addressing it. Understanding homelessness in Prince Albert, the factors sustaining it, what resources are available regarding services, and local and global best practices needed to manage homelessness or care for people experiencing homelessness is crucial. About 30 in-depth interviews will be conducted with service providers and policy makers involved in addressing homelessness. We will review secondary data to explore employment initiatives and other preventative interventions to reduce homelessness. Our findings will provide policy direction and help service providers to better support people experiencing homelessness.

Nature Positive Reporting Assessment

Veritree connects businesses with verified tree planting projects. By facilitating these partnerships, Veritree helps businesses incorporate nature-based solutions into their business models.Veritree is building its offering for two different client sectors, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) customers, whereby corporate clients opt to plant trees for CSR purposes. In such a scenario, Veritree needs to provide a robust monitoring system that shows that the restoration is having ecological and social impacts. This requires aligning with metrics and indicators that support ecosystem health, as well as adhering to good practices and supporting economic development. For the second target customer, Veritree is building its technology to support carbon and nature based disclosure reporting, with the future opportunity to license the technology to be used in Nature-based supply chains such as agroforestry, production forestry and oceans. In this scenario, there is a need to align with the ever evolving Environmental Social Governance (ESG) landscape for businesses to understand their land and marine based social and environmental risks. As such, the internship will provide opportunities to document current nature positive frameworks via metrics and indicators, conduct a case study on TNFD, and conduct a gap analysis between Veritree’s technology and current nature-positive reporting frameworks.

Analyse ergonomique du gilet pare-balles avec attaches polyvalentes

L’étude vise à analyser l’impact du port d’un gilet pare-balles (GPB) avec système d’attaches polyvalentes « Molle » sur les postures et les gestes des policiers.ères dans le cadre de leur travail. À l’aide d’une analyse ergonomique et de simulations comparant le gilet actuel et le GPB Molle, l’analyse vise à identifier dans quelle mesure le design du GPB affecte l’exécution du travail et favorise la genèse de douleurs ou d’inconfort. Il vise également à identifier les « schémas » de répartitions d’équipements sur le corps les plus efficaces, puis à élaborer des critères de performance d’un GPB répondant aux dimensions corporelles variées des patrouilleurs, puis à proposer des repères de conception ou de choix de gilet (textiles, dimensionnement et structure) qui permettront de répondre à ces critères.

Caractérisation d’enduit à base de fritte de verre pour l’extrusion du titane

La fabrication de pale de compresseur en titane pour moteur d’avion se déroule avec le procédé d’extrusion, ce procédé requiert de chauffer d’abord les pièces dans un four à haute température et ensuite les presser avec une presse hydraulique dans une matrice (orifice préformé) qui lui donnera sa forme finale. En passant la pièce dans un four à très haute température le titane à un problème, une couche d’oxyde se forme ce qui rend l’extrusion difficile. Pour remédier à ce problème, l’industrie de l’extrusion utilise un enduit lubrifiant à base de verre qui recouvre les pièces et permet de protéger le titane de ce phénomène.
Par contre, le manque d’information sur les défauts causés par les différents paramètres intrinsèques de l’enduit et de son application créer une variabilité sur l’extrusion du titane qui rend le procédé très difficile. Le but de la recherche est donc de caractériser les tendances entre les défauts de sortie des pièces et les différents paramètres de l’enduit lubrifiant afin de réduire cette variabilité.

OceanView Current Enhancements

Northern Radar Inc. (NRI) is working to expand its capability in ocean remote sensing of surface currents, surface winds and sea state, and is partnered with Memorial University to develop advanced HF radar algorithms The objectives of this work include a full analysis of NRI’s existing intellectual property, adapting and integrating the algorithms into new applications, to describe the inherent errors in the HFSWR surface current measurement, and verify and validate the adapted algorithms using data from upcoming field trials. The intern’s background has been primarily theoretical work in the university environment, and the proposed experience will be invaluable to the intern’s career development in the realm of radar remote sensing.

A Comprehensive Evaluation of various EDR Products in Alignment with MITRE Framework

The rise in cyber threats mandates robust EDR products like CrowdStrike, Sophos, and Sentinel1, with evaluation within the MITRE ATTACK framework improving response to varied threats. The project aims to compare EDR products comprehensively using the MITRE framework, identifying strengths and weaknesses in countering advanced attack techniques and offering optimal EDR selection advice. The analysis will include simulated and real-world attack scenarios, evaluating detection, prevention, and response mechanisms of EDR solutions. This research aids organizations in decision-making, strengthens cybersecurity readiness, evolves defense strategies against modern threats, and serves as a valuable resource for cybersecurity practitioners, tech adopters, and industry experts looking to enhance security measures in the digital realm.

Ongoing innovation with energy-economy-emissions models

The goal of this project is to support the research learning of three master’s students whose work would advance methods for estimating the impacts on emissions, the economy, energy costs and housing affordability resulting from government environment, technology, economic and urban form policies and investments – occurring at all three levels of government in Canada. The modelling and data advances resulting from this project and the training of these three interns will improve Canada’s ability to cost-effectively achieve its GHG commitments, notably its net-zero by 2050 target. After graduating, the students will be highly qualified personnel likely to play key roles in the efforts of Canada and other countries to accelerate the global energy transition that is essential for preventing a catastrophic outcome for humanity.

Stress et bien-être des bovins laitiers : méthodes d’évaluation et exploration de leurs interrelations avec le stress des producteurs

L’amélioration du bien-être des animaux d’élevage est une préoccupation importante de l’industrie et une exigence grandissante des consommateurs. Cependant, les considérations pour le bien-être des animaux tiennent rarement compte du bien-être des producteurs. La démarche de ce projet intersectoriel est de montrer que l’amélioration du bien-être des animaux d’élevage doit considérer le bien-être des producteurs. Notre objectif est de décrire le lien encore méconnu entre le stress des producteurs et le bien-être de leurs bovins laitiers. Les concentrations d’une hormone de stress appelée cortisol seront mesurées de façon innovante dans les poils des bovins et les cheveux des producteurs. L’intérêt de cette méthode innovante pour évaluer le bien-être des bovins laitiers sera exploré. Des résultats positifs à ce projet permettraient d’identifier des leviers pour améliorer le bien- être des bovins ainsi que de comprendre, que pour améliorer le bien-être des animaux, il est nécessaire de considérer celui de leurs producteurs.

Accroître l’autonomisation du personnel pour favoriser l’innovation au sein de l’écosystème aérospatial québécois : étude des déterminants et des retombées potentielles

Avec l’arrivée rapide des technologies émergentes et les objectifs du secteur aérospatial en matière de développement durable, les entreprises du secteur aérospatial québécois doivent aujourd’hui adapter leurs pratiques de gestion afin de demeurer compétitives sur le marché et attrayantes pour le talent. Alors que les modèles existants de gestion de changements suivent plutôt une approche hiérarchique descendante (top-down), il devient maintenant pertinent d’explorer une narrative ascendante (bottom-up) dans les contextes de la transformation numérique et du développement durable, où les enjeux d’agilité, de compétences, et de diversité et inclusion deviennent cruciaux. Ce projet cherche à identifier et mesurer les facteurs déterminant le degré d’autonomisation (empowerment) du personnel ainsi que les retombées potentielles à travers une étude de cas dans le secteur aérospatial québécois. Il permettra de proposer des meilleures pratiques pour améliorer le niveau d’autonomisation du personnel et en revanche, accélérer la transformation numérique et le développement durable du secteur.

Quantum-Inspired Machine Learning Methods for Anomaly Detection

Using simplified language understandable to a layperson, provide a general, one-paragraph description of the proposed research project to be undertaken by the intern(s) as well as the expected benefit to the partner organization. (100-150 words)
In this project, we will develop quantum and quantum-inspired machine learning models for anomaly detection applications. We will build statistical models based on tensor networks and density matrices of quantum systems, which will be trained on available data to tell normal data samples (like healthy X-rays scans, or normal credit card transactions) from anomalous (like unhealthy X-ray scans or fraudulent transactions??. We will utilize quantum physics-inspired methods, which offer a novel and advanced way to address these tasks. We will test our models on a variety of anomaly detection tasks including health-related tasks, financial fraud detection, manufacturing monitoring, etc. We will identify the most compelling use cases where our models bring the most advantage. Upon successful execution of this project, we will publish our results in a machine learning journal and will promote our results to be used in real-life applications so that society can directly benefit from the basic science advances.??
