Opening Doors to the Arts

Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts (ACUA) is a not for profit, registered charitable provincial arts organization located in Edmonton. ACUA has partnered with CARFAC Alberta to deliver this project. ACUA and CARFAC Alberta have identified that there is an immediate need to support new artists that have made Edmonton and Alberta their home and connect them to the arts communities where they now reside. Our organizations have partnered to develop a professional development and mentorship program targeted at immigrant, indigenous and emerging artists in our community. Our organizations and the intern will develop the business plan and will create a formal program to connect Canadian established artists with emerging artists that wish to understand how to build a career in the visual arts sector in Alberta. The program will include mentorship opportunities, synchronous and asynchronous workshops and educational opportunities, and entrepreneurship and exhibition opportunities.

Catalyst Coated Membrane Conditioning

Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell production facility must condition rolls of catalyst coated membrane [CCM] material to specific humidity and temperature conditions before using CCM in the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane fuel cell manufacturing process. Rolls of CCM material are conditioned in a clean room for a fixed time upon delivery to the facility. Previous testing was conducted to determine the time at which a cut segment of CCM could lay flat. To ensure CCM have dimensional stability, the CCM roll must have uniform water content. Ionic and electronic conductivity are water dependent properties so a CCM will be uniformly conditioned when they equilibrate. The roll conditioning time can be determined when a signal clearly indicates that ionic and/or electronic conductivity has reached a steady state. A testing apparatus and process will be developed to quantitatively measure whether a CCM roll has been conditioned uniformly. This can improve knowledge of conditioning time requirements; initiate potential standard development; improve quality assurance by tailoring conditioning time to individual types of CCM material and thickness; and possibly reduce the fixed time conditioning process to reduce overall fuel cell manufacturing time.

We aim to revolutionize the way independent artists distribute and promote their music. By leveraging AI and the latest React technologies, the project addresses the critical challenges of visibility and engagement that artists face in the digital era. Patrick will develop an AI-powered metadata form and an analytics dashboard to provide artists with actionable insights for their promotion strategies. Ray will focus on creating an advanced system for fair royalty distribution and an AI tool for generating custom cover art.

Utilizing Agile methodologies, Jira, and Trello for efficient project management, the initiative is set to deliver advanced tools that simplify distribution, enhance promotional efforts, and ensure equitable royalty splits. Running from May to September 2024, it will not only introduce technological innovations but also offer extensive documentation, user feedback analysis, and a roadmap for future enhancements.

This project represents a significant step forward for Boost Collective, positioning it as a leader in music distribution and promotion. It promises to empower Canadian artists with the resources they need to succeed, fostering economic and cultural growth within Canada’s music industry.

United Way Digital Archives Project

The Saskatoon United Way has worked for over sixty years to create change in the city of Saskatoon, making lives better for all city residents. The organization works to change the lives of vulnerable children, youth and their families so they have the means to thrive as strong citizens in the community. They work to combat issues including mental health, poverty, homelessness, and racism.
The United Way provides funding for long and short-term change, investing in local programs and organizations to meet the needs of those most vulnerable. To achieve long-term change, the United Way participates in research, strategy development, investments, partnerships, evaluation, and advocacy.
Approaching its 65th anniversary, the organization is looking to better examine its organizational history. The United Way is partnering with the University of Saskatchewan History Department’s CoLab – Centre for Community-Engaged and Collaborative Historical Research (CoLab) to review and document its organizational history, highlighting the organization’s significant contributions to the lives of Saskatoon residents.

Automated Robotic Systems for Parallel Material Handling and Characterization

Chemia is a material discovery company that aims to improve its material handling and characterization processes by developing innovative automation and robotics solutions in this project. The initiative is set to enhance Chemia’s capabilities in developing innovative functional materials, focusing on developing more efficient CO2 capture and waste heat recovery technologies. This project is particularly geared towards overcoming current limitations in manual material transportation and the lack of parallelization in experimentation processes. The Implementation of new technology initiatives to increase company and client efficiency and productivity

Marketing Kitchen is looking to introduce new technologies to their direct mail business to ensure future growth and expansion but to do this we need assistance from highly skilled co-op students who can help us with the research, development and implementation. Specifically we are targeting the use of QR code wearable scanners across multiple departments, an on-line Client Service Portal to streamline job orders and improve project management and client service levels and Cobots (collaborative robots) to our warehouse that can undertake basic and repetitive projects to support our busy fulfillment team. All three successive projects will help improve internal company productivity and efficiency and increase and enhance the service levels we provide to our clients. In taking these proactive steps, our processes will become more robust, time spent on jobs reduced, quote accuracy increased and our financial footing more secure. In so doing our genuine belief is that we can grow both our client and employee base, offer great learning experiences for the students who work with us and ultimately safeguard our future in an increasingly competitive print production market.

The present study will examine the influence creative expression can play on the mental well being of Syrian refugee children living outside of settlement camps in Istanbul. Drawing and storytelling activities are purposed to work as psychological first aid for refugee children to nurse from their trauma. Our main objectives will be to provide space and tools to allow children relate to their refugee experience, encourage interaction and cohesion among children and use the results to reflect on the role of community based interventions for the mental well being of refugee children in transitioning and unsettled situations. At the end of this project, we hope to provide results that will lead future research with comprehensive community based strategies and help participating children with their healing process
