Neighbourhood Sustainability Assessment: Connecting Impact with Policy Intent

The Neighbourhood Sustainability Assessment: Connecting Impact with Policy Intent project seeks to conduct a sustainability assessment of the UniverCity neighbourhood on Burnaby Mountain. The Community Capital NSA tool will be used to evaluate how well the UniverCity neighbourhood is meeting its vision of being a model sustainable complete community. Results will be subjected to a comparative analysis with the results of an earlier assessment done by the Foundation for Sustainable Area Development’s FSA assessment tool. The comparative results analysis will contribute to the international dialogue surrounding rapid vs. in-depth assessment practices, sustainability assessment frameworks and indicators. The comparative analysis will also work to validate the results of the two assessments, influencing the future sustainability action and reporting priorities of one of Canada’s leading sustainable neighbourhood developments.

Ultimarii – Market Entry and Product Launch

Ultimarii is focused on accelerating the approval process for major projects by leveraging advanced large language model (LLM) technology to streamline environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and other regulatory filings. Our platform offers tools for auto-drafting, summarizing, analyzing, and predicting outcomes of regulatory applications, thereby increasing the efficiency and reducing the costs associated with project approvals. Ultimarii aims to support projects across various sectors, including renewable energy, carbon capture storage, small modular reactors, mining, and more, indirectly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of sustainable development.

The selected intern will play an important role in supporting Ultimarii’s growth trajectory by independently executing crucial marketing activities, such as digital marketing campaigns, branding initiatives, and market research projects. The intern will establish Ultimarii’s online presence by creating branded social media accounts and crafting engaging content spotlighting the co-founders’ expertise and the company’s value proposition in streamlining regulatory filings for environmental impact assessments. Additionally, the intern will conduct comprehensive market research to draft a competitive analysis, identify potential partnerships, refine marketing strategies, and design a targeted campaign to establish Ultimarii as a thought leader in regulatory compliance. Through these initiatives as well as some general administrative duties, the intern will play a pivotal role in accelerating Ultimarii’s growth, increasing its market presence in Alberta and positioning it for success across Canada.

Thin Air Labs Funding Catalyst: Unlocking sustainable operating models for non-dilutive funding delivery

Thin Air Labs is a venture capital and services firm in Calgary Alberta. We are a founder first organizations that supports start-ups with data management, capital strategy and software development. Our Funding Catalyst team has secured over $40,000,000 in non-dilutive funding fro innovative ventures, through grant writing and capital strategy consulting.

The intern role will be a critical addition to the funding catalyst team and contribute to the creation, maintenance and strategy of the funding catalyst business line. The intern will synthesize complex information to articulate founders vision, support the creation of a grants database, and contribute to developing sustainable tools for grant writing and capital strategy, management. The Intern will report to the Funding Catalyst team lead, and work directly with the funding Catalyst team, with specific development goals over four months. At the end of the internship, the intern will be expected to produce a summary report on their activities and achievements over the four months. They will also be expected to generate an impact report on how the Thin Air Funding Catalyst team has influenced Calgary ventures and Canadian startups, highlighting its contributions and broader societal impacts.

Valorisation des déchets plastiques par pyrolyse et co-pyrolyse

Sur les 350 millions de tonnes de plastique produites annuellement, seules 9% sont recyclées; le reste étant enfouies, incinérées ou simplement laissées dans la nature. La pollution induite par ces déchets menace tout notre écosystème. La conversion thermochimique conjointe de ces produits avec des résidus forestiers permettrait de venir proposer une solution élégante à cette problématique. Écologique tout d’abord, puisque les matières plastiques ne seraient plus une nuisance toxique. Énergétique car la co-pyrolyse de ces intrants (résidus forestiers/plastiques) permettrait de produire un syngas riche en H2 et en CO; utilisable comme source d’énergie primaire ou pour produire des biocarburants (procédé Fischer-Tropsch). Économique enfin, puisque les produits de pyrolyse (syngas, biohuile et biochar) sont très prisés des industriels (métallurgie, industrie chimique…).
La mise en place d’un tel projet permettrait au partenaire ainsi qu’au Canada de développer une expertise sur un sujet d’actualité, de proposer des voies de valorisation innovantes et inédites et de se placer comme un leader mondial.

This exercise would be a one-of-a-kind delivery for a region such as Lloydminster and showcase the community’s capacity to respond to hazards, work collaboratively, and support exterior groups integration into a response team.

Enhanced efficiency by simplified business process through flowcharting or automation

Natik is growing exponentially and in order to keep up with the demands, we need to find ways to simplify the business process by eliminating nonvalue added activities like bottlenecks to save time and maximize productivity. As a start, we recently moved to an ERP system, Sage 100, as a means for effective control and timely reporting of company’s financial health at any point in time. In addition, our manpower also increased.

The accounting team needs support from an intern, a fresh set of eyes, to evaluate the process and by being an active participant, the intern will be able to identify areas for improvement, opportunities to use the skill sets acquired in the school in a work setting and recommend solutions that are practical and actionable.

Rheological behavior of modified asphalt under short and long-term aging in Colombia

This project focuses on investigating the behavior of a typical Colombian asphalt, which has been modified to enhance its properties, under short and long-term aging conditions. The primary objective is to evaluate how these modifications influence the asphalt’s strength and durability, critical factors affecting its lifespan in road pavement. The overarching goal is to develop guidelines for best practices in Colombia, taking into account local asphalts and modifiers. This will contribute to improving the designs of asphalt mixes used in road construction in Colombia, making them more resistant, durable, and sustainable. . The partnership will further ÉTS’s initiatives in understanding asphalt aging phenomena and provide the Universidad Nacional de Colombia access to state-of-the-art equipment, benefiting the broader Canadian and Colombian infrastructure sectors.

Create Your Self: A Study of Avatars in Virtual Reality

This project aims to simplify the creation of avatars for use in research, with a focus on self, identity, and facial recognition. Avatars, or digital selves, can be challenging to make and limited by software, and this is made worse when participants’ avatars look different from themselves in real life. The goal of this research is to figure out how to standardize the creation of avatars for use in research. Outcomes will be usable by any researchers interested in conducting VR research using human avatars. The intern, upon completion of the time abroad, will return to the home university and train researchers in the skills learned abroad, and ideally create a cross-country collaboration for the study of avatars that will continue to standardize and simplify the learning and research process.
