Tabor Lake Biomass Transformation: Sustainable Composting of Aquatic Weed

The proposed research project at Tabor Lake, led by a dedicated intern, focuses on transforming the overgrown aquatic weeds in the lake into a valuable resource. These weeds, currently a nuisance, will be converted into organic compost through innovative and eco-friendly methods. This compost can then be used to enrich soil, supporting agriculture and gardening. The project is not just about cleaning up the lake; it’s about turning an environmental problem into a practical solution. For the Tabor Lake Society, our partner in this endeavor, the benefits are twofold: it helps restore the natural balance of the lake, making it healthier for wildlife and enjoyable for the community, and provides a sustainable way to manage weed overgrowth in the future. The impact of high frequency offenders on the operation of the criminal justice system in British Columbia

This internship is designed to analyse the impact of high frequency offenders (HFO) on the criminal justice system in British Columbia. Research indicates that HFOs have a substantial impact on police reported offences, the court system and the corrections system. Through a partnership with the Ministry of Justice of British Columbia and Sierra Systems, an IT service and consulting firm, the internship will work on business analytics to support HFO analysis for data experts and business experts within the MOJ. The work includes leveraging the expertise of the intern on the operational databases of the MOJ, which were built and are maintained by Sierra Systems. The first part of the internship is devoted to the extraction and analysis of HFO data and includes a report on the outcomes of the analysis. The second part is focused on developing, calibrating and validating a queue network model that differentiates between HFOs and non-HFOs and tracks the differential resource consumption of accused and offenders through the court and corrections systems. The mathematical model will provide the MOJ with a planning and analysis tool for policy changes in regards to HFOs.

The Effects of the ObeEnd Device on the Postprandial Response of Enterogastric Hormones and Appetite

WAT Medical Enterprise is developing is a new and innovative wellness technology that may help with weight loss called the ObeEnd band. The band uses electrical pulses to stimulate an acupressure point close to the wrist, which our previous research study shows can decrease the amount of food intake. More research is needed to identify the potential mechanisms by which the ObeEnd device affects appetite and to determine the optimal duration of stimulation. The objective of the project is to determine how stimulation of PC6 with the ObeEnd device affects appetite scores and the enterogastric hormonal response to a meal. The results will help the company fine tune the device and determine the most effective recommendations of device use, backed by scientific evidence.

Évaluation d’une plateforme d’accompagnement au loisir autonome en plein air destinée aux personnes ayant des incapacités

Seize pourcents de la population mondiale vivent avec une ou plusieurs incapacités, limitant leur participation à des activités physiques récréatives. L’Association régionale de loisir pour personnes handicapées (ARLPH) de la Capitale-Nationale développe actuellement une plateforme numérique sécuritaire, éthique, et accessible destinée aux personnes vivant avec des incapacités (PAI). Elle comprend : 1) de la formation pour les bénévoles accompagnant les PAI lors d’activités physiques récréatives de plein air adaptées, 2) de la formation pour les PAI concernant l’usage d’équipements adaptés, et 3) un jumelage des PAI avec ces accompagnateurs formés. La stagiaire devra ainsi évaluer l’utilisation et les bénéfices du déploiement de cette plateforme, en incluant tout au long du projet les PAI. L’ARLPH aura alors un avantage indéniable par rapport à d’autres organisations de son secteur, le projet étant centré autour des besoins de son équipe qui disposera alors d’informations supplémentaires à celles qui seront diffusées scientifiquement.

Development of novel ALDH1A3 inhibitors potentially useful in the treatment of cancer

The World Health Organization identifies breast cancer as the most prevalent cancer, affecting 7.8 million individuals from 2015 to 2020. Mortality often stems from metastatic disease recurrence and drug resistance, particularly due to Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs), which drive tumor initiation and progression. Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1A3 (ALDH1A3) is a marker for breast CSCs correlated to a higher risk of cancer relapses, chemoresistance, and poor clinical outcomes. While ALDH1A3, a member of the ALDH superfamily (EC: 1.2.1.5), emerged as a valuable target, developing potent and selective inhibitors remains challenging. Recent optimization efforts yielded VE3 (patent application filed in Italy), a promising anti-ALDH1A3 compound (IC50 of 1.9 nM by Aldefluor assay), serving as a hit compound for developing novel ALDH1A3 inhibitors with an imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine core. Building on the established host-home institution collaboration, this project aims to provide potent and selective ALDH1A3 inhibitors as derivatives of VE3 for future application in breast cancer treatment. It will evaluate their functional profiles, selectively inhibiting ALDH1A isoforms and their antiproliferative activity in MDA-MB-231 cells overexpressing ALDH1A3 or ALDH1A1. Ultimately, identifying a potent ALDH1A3 inhibitor will be a step forward toward transferring the ALDH1A3-targeting strategy into clinical practice, gaining a better understanding of ALDH1A3’s molecular mechanisms.

A hybrid AI platform for Streamlining Evaluation (HAIPSE) of Applications

This project is meant to develop a Hybrid AI Platform for Streamlining Evaluation (HAIPSE) of applications assisting the partner organization, The NIB Trust Fund, in processing the two categories of funding applications. The NIB Trust Fund supports education programs of the First Nation and Métis individuals and organizations aimed at healing, reconciliation, and knowledge building. Currently, evaluation of the applications is extremely time- and labour-demanding taking the limited NIB staff around six months out of the year. The proposed methodology involves different AI techniques, such as knowledge engineering, expert system designs, natural language processing, multinomial classification, etc. The HAIPSE will be integrated with the online Survey Monkey Apply System being used by The NIB Trust Fund to collect applications. Reconciliation with indigenous nations is a long-lasting priority of the Canadian Government and Society. The project obviously contributes to the fulfillment of this overarching goal.

Admissions Sherpa – An Investigation of Agile Strategies for Modern Web Platforms

This project isto develop a new website which will provide an infrastructure for non-profit admission. The admission professionals will be using this websites to conduct the interviews, in terms of providing them with the guiding question. The use of check boxes and other visual tools, such as radio buttons, text boxes, etc. will help provide every individual’s needs. The main goal is to provide a webpage as simple as possible in terms of handling and provide the best practice admission experience for a prospective student. The option to print/save the Personal Education & Career Plan report of the prospective student once he/she completes the above-mentioned interview form, is also available. The interview information is the major step to guide the student for his/her future task. Hence after the completion of the interview, the web page won’t only allow saving the form but will also indicate the next steps/tasks for both the representative and the prospective student. The notification will be sent via mails (or any other method as required by the business) with all the information on WHAT NEXT. As the upstream system can be any CRM, the software should be intelligent enough to accept data from any CRM system.

Implementation of pest sensing system on commercial sprayer for intelligent spraying

The conventional approach of applying agro-chemicals uniformly to control pests in the potato field may not be the most efficient solution. The non-uniform distribution of pests and weeds necessitated site-specific management utilizing variable-rate and real-time spraying. To this end, a project is currently underway to implement of camera and detection pest algorithm as sensing system on commercial sprayer like the Case IH 3340, owned by McCain Foods, thereby enabling intelligent spraying. The implementation of a standardized communication system based on ISO protocol will connect the sensing system with the electronic components mounted already on the sprayer. The project aims to evaluate the instantaneous response of the spraying to the commands received from the sensing system to increase both –cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. This innovative approach has the potential to revolutionize the farming industry and represent a significant step forward in the optimization of agricultural production.

Point dendrometers are indispensable for monitoring tree growth and detecting stress in forest ecosystems, offering detailed insights into cambial activity and environmental responses. The project’s goal is to harness machine learning to address data gaps and enhance the precision of trend detection in dendrometer data. This
approach will also seek to identify signals of ecosystem health and stress, such as drought or disease impact, observable in tree growth patterns. By integrating these ground-level measurements with remote sensing data, the project aims to scale localized stress indicators to wider ecosystem monitoring, thus providing a more holistic
view of forest health. The synergy between detailed dendrometer data and expansive remote sensing imagery, analyzed through advanced algorithms, will offer unprecedented capabilities in assessing the resilience and vitality of forests on a macroscopic scale.

Wet Waste Disposal Strategy

The project aims to find a sustainable solution for the kitchen waste produced by CMH, a backcountry lodge operator in eastern BC. The issue affects many businesses across different sectors and the findings could benefit them as well. CMH has eight lodges with varying occupancy sizes and waste amounts. The lodges are remote, high-altitude, and mostly busy in winter, which makes natural composting difficult and slow. CMH has explored composting, burning, landfilling, and pig-feeding in the past, but none of these methods are ideal for the environment, cost, or energy. The project will use the previous work and some assumptions to compare the impact and workload of each method for each lodge, considering the pre-pandemic guest load. The project will also consider the accessibility and proximity of the lodges, as some of them are on closed logging roads in winter. The project hopes to find the best solution for each lodge and the overall operation.

Innovations thérapeutiques ciblant le récepteur à l’apéline dans les cancers localement agressifs

La prise en charge thérapeutique des cancers localement agressifs, dont font partie les cancers de l’ovaire (OvCa) et les glioblastomes (GBM), est aujourd’hui encore un enjeu majeur, avec une survie à 5 ans de 30% et 4% respectivement. La communauté scientifique se penche sur l’identification de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques afin de pouvoir proposer des traitements ciblés et personnalisés et ainsi augmenter les chances de succès. Dans cet objectif, le récepteur à l’apéline (APJ) a été identifié comme cible pertinente dans les OvCa et le GBM. Il s’agit d’une protéine à sept domaines transmembranaires faisant partie de la grande famille des récepteurs couplés aux protéines G (RCPG). APJ est surexprimé dans environ 25% des OvCa et 30% des GBM et a été corrélé avec un pronostic sombre dans ces cancers. Ainsi, le projet scientifique portera sur l’investigation du récepteur à l’apeline (APJ) comme cible dans ces cancers localement agressifs.
