Creating an anticipatory data ethics protocol for emerging nature-based solutions

Ethical data governance practices continue to shift with the emergence of digital technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence. As these technologies begin to integrate more with climate and nature-based solutions, unique implications appear around data collection, handling, and use. Established concerns about privacy, consent, and data transparency present themselves, along with new considerations where information about people and environments come together. Veritree is collaborating with the University of Guelph to review current and future environmental technology trends, and to create an anticipatory data ethics protocol for the nature-based solutions Veritree provides. Veritree will use the review and ethics protocol to support their data pratices, to keep pace with shifting ethical considerations in the industry, and to contribute to global, data-driven efforts that address climate change and environmental conservation.

Barriers and Facilitators to the Integration of Mental Health Servicesin Primary Care in Vietnam from the Perspective of Health Workers: Individual,Organizational and Structural Factors”

Access to appropriate mental health services is critically limited for many people living in low and middle-income countries. Making services for depression available in primary health care increases the successful diagnosis and treatment of depression and improves the quality of people’s lives. As the first point of contact with patients, primary care workers are essential to the successful delivery of depression care. Many factors, such as health worker attitudes about mental illness, their workload, and competing priorities may impact their ability to successfully provide mental health services. This study will examine factors that influence the successful integration of services for depression in primary care in Hanoi, Vietnam to understand how to design effective interventions for health workers to improve their capacity to provide care for depression. The results may be used when planning for the integration of depression services in primary care in Vietnam and in other countries.

An automated system for personalized nutrition via 3D food printing

This project presents an innovative approach to personalized nutrition using 3D food printing technology. It comprises two key components. Firstly, a decision-support system is designed to evaluate the feasibility of turning a 3D food design into a tangible, edible product. This system helps ensure that the food is not only nutritious but also practical to create with the 3D printer. Secondly, a user-friendly algorithm is developed to offer customized dietary recommendations after users input their personal data. By considering factors like individual health goals, dietary restrictions, and preferences, this algorithm generates tailored nutritional plans, making it easier for individuals to maintain a balanced and personalized diet.

Quantum Optimal Transport-Enhanced Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory for Spin Systems

Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory (RDMFT) has emerged as a powerful tool for the characterization and prediction of electronic properties in quantum systems. This research project seeks to elevate the capabilities of RDMFT, particularly in the context of spin systems. In particular, we will develop Quantum Optimal Transport techniques for extracting electronic spin information and the incorporation of these techniques into RDMFT calculations. This research project run on pen&paper/theoretical development to implementation of computational algorithms into software packages (QC-Devs). Target applications include magnetic materials, quantum dots, and superconductors.

Towards the development of an in silico model for the zebrafish action potential

The heart beats 3-4 billion times in one’s lifetime, while adapting its activity to meet the body’s continuously changing physiological demands. This adaptation is driven partly by the central nervous system, which sends signals to a network of nerves in the heart, known as the intracardiac nervous system (IcNS). Many believe the IcNS acts as a ‘little brain in the heart’, by combining nervous system inputs and local information to rapidly alter the heart’s output in response to changes in its environment. Yet a clear understanding of the inner workings of this system remains elusive. The zebrafish has emerged as a powerful tool to study the IcNS in the whole heart, which is limited in mammals. The goal of my proposed project is to gain further understanding of the IcNS through the creation of a zebrafish-specific mathematical model, which I will bring back to Canada and combine with my experimental work to generate new fundamental knowledge about IcNS function and its importance in the healthy and diseased heart.

It can reduce the need of the physical equipment to get hands on experience. Virtual models of machines are built to perform all the tasks as required in the real life such as troubleshoot different failures so that users can master the machine operation and maintenance without the risk and cost of the real machine. Training and maintenance simulations of different scenarios are developed to meet different industrial needs. Partner organization will benefit from improved worker skills, leading to safe and efficient operations.

Blockchain-Enhanced Fake News Detection in Social Networks

This project aims to take advantage of the blockchain ecosystem to detect fake news. This is done by designing a rating system that works on the blockchain network through which a group of verified reviewers will rate the news prior to broadcasting. News with inadequate verification from reviewers will be marked as ‘fake’. Afterward, the social network will be informed of such news. Consequently, the news is either deleted or marked as fake on the social network. Moreover, the blockchain network prevents future fake news with similar content from being published using machine learning models that are trained with past detected fake news.

Anti-islanding detection for renewable energy systems indistribution system

Integration of renewable energy systems into grid is an effective solution to the electric energy shortage and environmental pollution. A number of technical challenges may arise with increased grid-connected renewable energy systems. One of the most important issues is how to achieve the islanding protection. Many anti-islanding detection methods have been reported for single renewable energy systems in the last decades. In practice, however, the multi-unit systems are distributed in different feeders. Consequently, all of the existing methods might fail in this case. Failure of antiislanding detection will degrade system reliability and even pose a safety risk to utility workers and the general public. Therefore, the objective of the project is to develop an effective anti-islanding detection strategy for the multiple grid-connected renewable energy systems. The results of this study will be beneficial for Hydro One Network to achieve the reliable anti-islanding protection for multiple inverters in distributed grid.

Conductive Battery Binders

The increasing demand for lithium-ion batteries in daily applications has driven the need for improved battery technology. However, the separation of battery electrode components is a key factor leading to a decrease in battery lifetime. Traditional binders, a critical component in batteries, have been associated with high costs and environmental concerns due to the use of toxic solvents and energy-intensive drying processes.
Our innovative binder, PPy:CMC, offers a solution that maintains performance comparable to commercial binders. What sets it apart is its water-processable nature, eco-friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. Not only does this technology reduce energy consumption and associated costs by 80%, but it also saves valuable manufacturing space by eliminating the need for drying ovens.
