Implementing A Community Model of Policing: A Case Study of Change

Over the past several years, serious concern has emerged in many Western nations over the future and sustainability of public policing. The situation in Canada is no different. Key stakeholders in the Canadian policing community have expressed serious concern about the sustainability of policing. A model of public policing has emerged in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan that may represent a way forward for municipalities as well as larger jurisdictions across the country. The Community Mobilization Prince Albert (CMPA) model is a significant departure from the way in which public policing has been delivered in this country. Borrowed from the HUB model that was put in place in Scotland, the CMPA HUB model is based on suppression, prevention and intervention. This is a community approach to policing, wherein social agencies and services collaborate with the police to stop crime before it happens. The Scottish and Prince Albert HUB models have been met with considerable acclaim, however there has not been much measurement of the model’s effectiveness. The Peel Regional Police have now decided to run a pilot project to develop a made-in-Peel HUB model. TOBECONT’D

Exploring Restorative Responses to Hate & Radicalization

This project seeks to understand the appropriateness and applicability of restorative justice processes in preventing and responding to situations of hate and radicalization to violence, with consideration for how
restorative justice might complement existing de-radicalization/violence prevention and response programs, while also not causing further harm. Through a synthesis of existing literature, this research project will provide a
comprehensive overview of restorative justice practices in use in both the prevention of, and in response to, radicalization to violence, compiling a final report of best practices and approaches being used nationally and
internationally. The partner organization will benefit through the receipt of final project report, as well as distributable materials for partners and other stakeholders. Developed materials will serve as a blueprint for
other community-based organizations or social services agencies to use when developing services to prevent and respond to hate and radicalization to violence in their communities.

Game of Drones and Lord of Memes: Self-regulating civilians ethics in the tech-driven and democratized war in Ukraine

This research project aims to study the involvement of civilians in the war in Ukraine, focusing on their use of modern technologies like cyberwarfare, memes, and DIY drones. I will spend time in Ukraine, meeting different citizen groups and conducting interviews to understand their values and principles in defending their country. The study also includes foreign volunteers who have joined the conflict without any personal ties to Ukraine. The expected outcomes of the research include developing an ethics framework for civilians involved in the war, to guide their actions and decisions. The research findings will be shared with policy-makers and humanitarian organizations to promote responsible use of technology in conflicts. The London fellowship will be focused on getting in touch with european policymaker in military and humanitarian field for data gathering.

From stress to success: Investigating the effects of a 3D-multiple object tracking intervention on markers of oxidative stress in brain injury survivors

Brain injury, a leading cause of disability worldwide, affects a person’s mind and body. After injury, the brain needs more oxygen to begin recovery, which can result in a problematic process called “oxidative stress”. This research tests if training your brain with a video game, NeuroTracker, reduces oxidative stress, and improves brain injury-related outcomes. The brain is like a muscle; it can be trained and made stronger. NeuroTracker is like taking your brain to the gym, a small, repetitive action with a significant impact. This research examines if markers of oxidative stress are decreased after ten-weeks of brain training, and if changes persist over time. The Victoria Brain Injury Society (VBIS) is a project partner to include perspectives from experienced workers in the field and patients with lived experience of brain injury. This project aims to provide VBIS with evidence for NeuroTracker training, while sharing this knowledge with the community.

Passive carbonation of desulfurized Raglan tailings and support to the Raglan environment team

The Raglan operations aim to reduce their carbon footprint and find opportunities of waste valorization. The main objective of the internship is to launch the study of the carbon capture potential of desulfurized Raglan tailings and the possible valorization options of the carbonated desulfurized tailings and sulfide concentrate generated in the process. The sub-objectives are to desulfurize the Raglan tailings using froth flotation, characterize the desulfurized and sulfide concentrate fractions, and study the passive carbonation of the desulfurized tailings in the laboratory. The proposed internship is the first step of a broader research project that will feed the design of the reclamation scenarios at Raglan and help reduce the carbon footprint of the Raglan operations. Results will be potentially applicable at other Canadian mines in ultramafic settings.

Dôme virtuel 360

Advancing winter swathgrazing through virtual fencing and remote sensing

Forage blends also known as cocktails or polycrops are gaining popularity among beef producers and are being incorporated into grazing systems. Winter swathgrazing is a strategy that allows beef producers to extend cattle grazing activities into the fall and winter months, which provide some economic and environmental benefits that enhance farm sustainability. Adequate feed supplies during the winter increase the competitiveness of the cow-calf and stocker operations. Currently, the majority of winter swathgrazing has traditionally been applied to older cows that are in good body condition while the use of monoculture cereals is dominant. Evaluating whether the forage blend system can support growing steers will provide more options for producers. Unfortunately, performance information on young, weaned cattle grazing polycrops or forage blends in sparse. In addition, the labour involved in managing and moving fences deters entrants hoping to adopt swathgrazing as a feeding option. This study will provide additional empirical information on the performance of young steers swathgrazing forage blends during the winter.
