The effects of isocapnic respiratory muscle endurance training on the multidimensional components and neurophysiological mechanisms of exertional breathlessness in healthy adults

Respiratory muscle training (RMT) is a technique used to strengthen the muscles involved in breathing, aiming to improve breathing efficiency and endurance. While there is evidence that RMT can enhance exercise performance, muscle strength, and reduce breathlessness, there is still debate in the field due to the wide variety of devices and methods used. There are two main types of RMT: respiratory muscle strength training, such as inspiratory muscle training (IMT), which focuses on making the muscles stronger, and respiratory muscle endurance training, like voluntary isocapnic hyperpnea (VIH), which aims to improve muscle endurance. IMT has been well studied, particularly in athletes, but the effects of RMT, especially on the sensation of breathlessness, are still not fully understood. There’s potential for RMT to delay muscle fatigue, make breathing feel less difficult, though limited research has looked into how VIH impacts breathlessness. VIH involves low-force, fast breathing in and out, which is thought to better match the breathing demands of endurance sports like running and cycling. This study aims to explore how VIH affects both respiratory physiology and the multidimensional aspects of breathlessness, using a device called the Isocapnic BreathWayBetter (BWB). This research will provide Isocapnic Technologies Inc. insight of how their product affects breathlessness and could help tailor respiratory training to specific individuals.

Biofilm blocking

Pathogenic biofilms are a major food safety challenge. They are difficult to detect and very difficult to control after they form as biofilms protect bacteria from sanitizers, heat and other stressors that might otherwise be used to control the bacteria. As well, trying to remove the biofilm may break off chunks of biofilm which can either contaminate the food or start a new biofilm at another location in the food processing facility. This project is going to investigate the use of non-toxic quorum-sensing inhibitors (QSI) for preventing the incorporation of pathogenic E. coli into multi-species biofilms. Quorum sensing is bacterial communication and essential for biofilm formation. We will evaluate the quantity of biofilm produced before and after treatment with QSI using crystal violet assay. We will look at changes in structure of the biofilm after treatment with QSI using scanning electron microscopy. We will enumerate numbers of pathogenic E. coli present in biofilm before and after treatment with QSI. Finally, we will sequence RNA produced by the biofilm-forming bacteria before and after treatment with QSI for combinations of QSI and biofilm showing greatest and least inhibition. If QSI can prevent pathogens from incorporating in biofilms, the next step would be to evaluate the use of QSI in slaughter plants as an enhancement to existing hygiene protocols. This project will also give us a better understanding of how biofilms form which is currently poorly understood, especially concerning pathogenic E. coli. QSI could be another major leap forward for food safety.

Threats and opportunities for fruit and vegetable supply-chains in BC: A geospatial and survey-based assessment

Climate change is affecting agriculture in Canada in varied and complex ways. While northern areas may experience more favourable conditions for commodity crops, other regions face challenges such as increased temperature variability and extreme weather. Emerging agricultural technologies, including digital agriculture tools, controlled environment agriculture, and advances in agri-genomics, present promising solutions to enhance resilience and sustainability in agri-food systems. However, no single technology is a ‘silver bullet’ for food system sustainability issues, and research is required to better understand opportunities and potential impacts for their implementation. To address this gap, this research project: (1) examines threats and risks of climate change on BC’s fruit and vegetable production using spatial and climate models, (2) identifies opportunities for adopting agri-technologies with climate mitigation potential by surveying producers, and (3) analyzes the potential effects of policy incentives on technology adoption and sustainability outcomes.

Enhancing the Accuracy of Digital Twin Simulation with Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics

Manufacturing companies often face challenges like unexpected equipment breakdowns, shifting production needs, and resource shortages or surpluses, which can lead to delays in production schedules. Traditional systems struggle to manage these issues effectively. Our project introduces a better solution using Digital Twin (DT) technology, which creates a real-time digital replica of a factory’s operations. This digital twin helps predict and adapt to changes quickly. With advanced artificial intelligence, we can foresee problems, such as potential machine failures, and adjust plans in advance. This approach will enable our partner, Longterm Technology Services, to provide a more efficient digital solution, enhancing productivity and ensuring smooth operations for its clients.

Fraud-Centric Merchant Embeddings

Mastercard works with improving and securing payments of millions of cardholders and merchants. One of the primary objectives of Mastercard’s work is to detect and prevent fraudulent payments. There are several ways of committing such fraud, often such fraud can happen due to vulnerability of the merchant to such fraudulent threats and several other underlying factors. The first objective of this project is to get an understanding of what attributes are necessary for modelling this kind of a threat to our cardholders. Our second goal is to find an embedding space of the graph of transactions that preserves those attributes and can be used ny a simple classifier to efficiently determine whether a novel transaction is fraudulent or legitimate, with high accuracy.

Patient to provider AI message drafting in hospital-based outpatient care, a mixed-methods study exploring integration in care and impact

Patients can use secure messages to communicate with their healthcare providers through patient-facing patient portals. While patients like the use of secured messaging, it also increases the workload burden for providers, and as such, providers often do not offer it to patients. With recent years of technological innovation, electronic hospital records software has developed AI-generated email drafting to assist providers in replying to messages, thus minimizing the burden on providers’ workload. In collaboration with outpatient clinics at Women’s College Hospital, we will study the integration of AI message drafting, assess its impact on message volumes and response time, and explore users’ experience with the technology. The study will help the hospital make a decision whether the use of AI message drafting is worth further investment.
