Model compression and inference optimization for UAV’s companion computer

With the evolution of computer vision methods in recent years, more and more scene-understanding methods have been proposed. Meanwhile, SOTI also designed and developed several scene-understanding algorithms. However, due to the limited computing capabilities of UAVs, all these algorithms need to be compressed to use fewer resources. This project will deliver a model compression and deployment pipeline.

Predicting the exploitability of vulnerabilities

Everyday, hundreds of new vulnerabilities are discovered and disclosed to the users of the systems they affect. The sheer volume of vulnerabilities makes it difficult, if not impossible, for system administrators to rapidly address every vulnerability. Furthermore, research shows that only 5% of vulnerabilities are eventually exploited. This situation brings about a need to prioritize some vulnerabilities over others, with the vulnerabilities most likely to be exploited treated as priorities. Existing approaches to these vulnerabilities are inadequate because they rely on information that may be unavailable at the time the vulnerability is publicized. In this project, we endeavor to develop a vulnerability prioritization algorithm that only relies upon information available on the day the vulnerability is disclosed, and fills in missing data using ML.

Indigenous Energy Justice and Offshore Wind Development

The intern within this position will work with Indigenous Clean Energy (ICE) to help co-design resources for Indigenous governments, such as research protocols, that will identify Indigenous Nations strategies for offshore wind development approaches to Indigenous Energy Justice to benefit diverse Indigenous seascapes. Additionally, this position will be responsible for coordinating and executing meetings and program deliverables, research data and content for program development, and engage in outreach and communications with Indigenous communities and global contacts. The expected benefit to the partner organization from this research is that it has the capacity to provide a unique network connecting communities across industry and academia to expand offshore wind energy research in North America. Additionally, this position will help to better understand and improve justice outcomes and the well-being for Indigenous Peoples affected by the looming energy transition consistent with the motivations behind Indigenous Energy Justice.

Investigating the role of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident E3 ligase RNF26 in endosomal regulation during mitosis

Eukaryotic cells have evolved complex sub-compartments to partition the cell interior into tiny contained 3D microenvironments. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) communicates with and regulates other intracellular structures, including the endolysosomal system, through membrane contact sites (MCSs). Dysfunction in endolysosomal spatial-temporal regulation is implicated in neurodegeneration, cancer, and metabolic disease. Recently, it was found that the loss of the ER-associated protein RNF26 disrupts the organization of the endolysosomal system. During mitosis – the self-replication of a cell into two nearly identical daughter cells – the ER and the endolysosomal system are remodeled. The specific role of ER:endosome MCSs and MCS-associated proteins during mitosis is yet to be determined. In this project, we will perform experiments to further understand the role of RNF26 and its regulation during mitosis. We will (1) visualize ER:endosome contact sites during cell division using a fluorescently-tagged cell line and confocal microscopy. We will (2) study the function of RNF26 during mitosis by depletion and overexpression experiments. Candidates will be validated and used to build a model explaining how RNF26 at ER:endosome contacts affect cell division.

Insertion et maintien en emploi de membres des communautés anicinapek de Kitcisakik et de Lac Simon au sein de l’entreprise minière Eldorado Gold Québec : portrait et pistes de solution

Le taux de participation de la main-d’oeuvre autochtone est nettement inférieur à celui des non-Autochtones et les barrières à l’emploi persistent. Des recherches précédentes ont permis d’identifier les meilleures pratiques liées au recrutement, à l’insertion et à la rétention de la main-d’oeuvre autochtone au sein de l’industrie minière. Celles-ci sont majoritairement déployées là où le cadre réglementaire l’exige. De telles pratiques, adaptées au contexte local, auraient intérêt à être déployées dans d’autres territoires, notamment aux Anicinapek désireux d’intégrer le secteur minier en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, où les Autochtones représentent moins de 1% de la main-d’oeuvre.
Le projet de maîtrise proposé consiste en une étude de cas qui sera réalisée en collaboration avec l’entreprise Eldorado Gold Québec de Val-d’Or et deux communautés anicinapek et permettra de (1) documenter les perceptions, les besoins et les intérêts des membres des communautés de Lac Simon et de Kitcisakik quant à l’occupation d’un emploi dans l’entreprise minière et (2) élaborer un plan d’action détaillé pour la conception et la mise en oeuvre d’un programme favorisant le recrutement, l’insertion professionnelle et le maintien en emploi de personnes anicinapek.

Development of novel bioemulsifiers from crosslinked and conjugated yeast derived proteins

More and more, consumers are looking for food products that meet their nutritional needs without the addition of complex, synthetic ingredients. This project focuses on the discovery of new emulsifiers to keep active ingredients, like omega 3 oils or fat soluble vitamins, well suspended and protected in food products. The emulsifiers will come from natural yeast, and they will be constructed from protein to increase the nutritional quality of the food without the use of synthetic ingredients. The properties of these proteins will be modified using food grade enzymes in order to make them more effective emulsifiers and stabilizers. Overall, this research will help the food industry make healthy, green and vegan food products for the consumer market.

Âge cinématique des associations stellaires jeunes du voisinage solaire

Lors de mon projet de stage, j’utiliserai les données de la mission Gaia, qui mesure la distance, le mouvement propre et la vitesse radiale de millions d’étoiles, afin de retracer l’orbite galactique d’étoiles au sein d’associations cinématiques jeunes du voisinage solaire et déterminer l’époque de leur formation. J’étudierai aussi leur évolution au fil du temps ainsi que les possibles interactions avec d’autres associations. Étudier les associations jeunes est une approche avantageuse pour en apprendre davantage sur les étoiles individuelles au sein l’association. Ces étoiles sont d’un intérêt particulier, car ce sont des cibles de choix pour la recherche et la caractérisation de planètes extrasolaires, notamment avec le télescope spatial James-Webb.

iGen Education Group opened in the Kerrisdale Community of Vancouver, British Columbia at the end of 2018. Previously, Sparks Academy offered high quality enhancement programs in STEAM learning for students aged 3 to 15. iGen Education Group has expanded to include three learning pathways and provides a range of choice when it comes to the places and spaces where children can engage in challenging STEAM learning, while emphasizing curiosity and creativity. Sparks offers a varieties of STEAM programs during the day for pre-schoolers, after-school programs for school aged children, various camps (i.e. summer, professional development days), and participation in local, provincial, as well as national competitions. Our various programs, such as the Compass Outdoor Education, offer STEAM learning outdoors activities to meet our students’ needs for physical development and purposeful engagement with our environment. iGen Education Group believes in a holistic development and engages students outdoors to inspire them and support them to explore interests and find their passion, aiming towards a full potential discovery. We try to creates critical thinkers, increase interdisciplinary competency, and enable the next generation of innovators.

Production of New Balsam Fir Lines Using Somatic Embryogenesis

Christmas tree growers in Nova Scotia are experiencing high demand for trees along with increasing pressure to adapt to changing climate conditions. The Christmas Tree Council of Nova Scotia (CTCNS) is the parent organization of three regional Christmas tree associations representing over 300 Christmas tree growers who grow primarily Balsam fir. These growers need trees well-suited to Nova Scotia climates with preferred traits like enhanced needle retention and later flushing dates. Both testing and production of these trees requires cloning new tree lines and somatic embryogenesis is the most promising method for doing so. However, current protocols for clonal propagation of Balsam fir using somatic embryogenesis are inefficient, and few viable lines of trees have been produced. Working with the CTCNS, this project will optimize the production of locally-adapted Balsam fir and result in at least 70 new lines for testing. These improved clonal propagation methods and access to a wider selection of trees will allow Nova Scotia Christmas tree growers to meet consumer demand and respond quickly to changing climate conditions.

Strategic Planning and Benchmarking in Minor Hockey

The Guelph Minor Hockey Association (GMHA) is a not-for-profit community sport organization (CSO) that has serviced the City of Guelph with youth hockey programming since 1948. Currently, 1,500 youth are enrolled in GMHA programming. Although hockey is known as Canada’s sport, the landscape has been changing. Many of the country’s largest minor hockey associations have reported regular declines in participation over recent years with the most significant losses coming from age groups between 14 and 18 years old. The decline in youth hockey participation has been linked to the sport’s extensive participation costs which has led to an overall lack of diversity and equity deserving stakeholders not feeling welcomed. While the GMHA has been able to maintain consistent registration levels, the call remains for Canadian sport organization to become more athlete-centred in their governance by showcasing their commitment to innovating programming and ensuring that all opportunities are safe from maltreatment. Thus, the goal of this internship is to support GMHA’s strategic planning process.

Financial Literacy and Mentorship for Indigenous Communities

IndigenousTech.ai Corporation (IndigenousTech.ai) since inception has been focusing on improving the quality of life for Indigenous peoples living on reserve. Through financial literacy training, housing reviews, credit projects, implementations of new technologies for remote communities, and mentorship programs, we have been able to establish an excellent network and trust with over forty (40+) Indigenous communities across the country and continue to grow our footprint. This project will specifically involve hiring two new interns for the summer to train them on financial literacy and technology certification programs to then deploy to twenty Indigenous high school students (for July and August) and over 500 Indigenous people on-reserve across the country.
