Ultrastructure of GABA, glycine and glutamate co-transmitting synapses in the immature brainstem

The synapse forms the core unit of information transfer in the brain, and most brain disorders, both developmental and degenerative, are caused by synaptic dysfunction. Understanding synaptic organization is therefore central to both basic research and health research in neuroscience. Our still-evolving understanding of the synapse includes relatively recent recognition that many synapses use multiple chemical signals, known as “co-transmission.” Synapses are so small that we need electron microscopy (EM) to study how co-transmitting synapses are organized, but most methods used to prepare samples for EM distort biological tissue. While innovative methods such as high-pressure freezing (HPF) can help minimize tissue distortion, this approach has not yet been used with the challenging brainstem tissue in which my lab in Canada studies co-transmitting synapses. I will work with American experts in EM and HPF to optimize HPF methods for brainstem tissue in order to examine the organization of co-transmitting synapses in the immature brainstem. This project will advance goals of both labs by expanding a new technique into another brain area and by answering specific questions about co-transmission.

NBCC Flex Program

HotSpot has developed a mobile application to allow users to pay for parking, transit, and taxis from their phone, with the return of funds at the end of the session back to them instead of in the meter. The mobile application has taken off and the organization is partnering with NBCC to develop talent from the start of interns academic programs to be able to get hands on experience with quality assurance, continuous improvement, technical writing and programming. This will help refine our current application, and in the later phase, add on to what currently exists with new sub functions.

Re-Envisioning the Landscape: Photography and Îyârhe Nakoda Resurgence

Between 1888 and 1958, several hundred government surveyors worked across the mountainous regions of what is now western Canada to create topographic maps. To do so, they used a made-in-Canada technique employing photography and a transit. Left in the wake of their map-making are more than 120,000 photographic negatives. Today these images are used to better understand changes in Canada’s mountain landscapes. Yet it must be remembered that – in mapping out a new nation – these photographs contributed to policies that discriminated against and excluded Indigenous peoples. Can these pictures be re-envisioned? Can they contribute to the continuation of Indigenous traditional knowledge and help recover and sustain relationships with the land? Can they create a more diverse and equitable future? Working in partnership with the Nakoda Oil and Gas, and in collaboration with the Stoney Nakoda Nations of Alberta, this project will develop a model for using historical and contemporary photographs in the service to Indigenous resurgence.

Effect of Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on the predictability of orthodontic treatment with clear aligners.

Low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) when used in conjunction with clear aligner orthodontic treatment has been shown in clinical studies literature to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement, reduce orthodontically induced tooth root resorption, and shorten the overall duration of orthodontic treatment. In-market use of LIPUS technology as an adjunct the clear aligners has grown significantly over the past several years, and a number of potential additional clinical benefits has been observed by clinicians and patients. The proposed project will analyze existing in-market clinical data to determine if such potential additional benefits are occurring and quantify their statistical and clinical significance. If the project results are positive, then this can help expand the therapeutic claim of SmileSonica Inc.’s Aevo System LIPUS medical device.

Characterizations of Meltblown polypropylene waste in mask manufacturing

Within the production process of Meltblown filtration materials for facial mask manufacturing, there is a considerable generation of clean waste of Meltblown polypropylene (PP) fabric. The direct disposal of these clean PP wastes represents a significant economic loss and, moreover, poses serious environmental pollution since PP is a non-biodegradable polymer that may take hundreds of years to decompose when landfilled. Recycling the clean polypropylene waste back for reuse in Meltblown manufacturing or the manufacturing of other products will not only bring sound economic benefits but also significantly lessen its environmental burden. In this MITACS project, we will characterize the structure and physical properties of the clean PP waste generated in the industry partner’s manufacturing facilities and identify strategies for their reuse in the manufacturing of products based on Meltblown technology.

Malassezia in chronic inflammation and cancer

Malassezia species are amongst the most abundant fungi in humans, found mostly in mucosal surfaces and on the skin. However, Malassezia can cause damage when present in tissue in Crohn’s disease and pancreatic cancer, but knowledge of Malassezia’s involvement in diseases of internal organs remains fragmented and incomplete. The project will involve determining if Malassezia are present at the site of multiple autoimmune diseases and cancers. Several methods will be used including staining using antibodies and other molecular tools. Also, immune response to Malassezia will be evaluated in these diseases at the humoral (antibody) and cellular levels, using state-of-the-art approaches.

Modeling human sequential decision making in an uncertain industrial environment through data analysis
