A Natural Solution: exploring nature-based solutions as an effective, multi-functional strategy across four regional and local scales

This project brings together a leading team of academics, public and private sector actors to co-develop a
decision-making framework for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to reduce climate change impacts like floods, heat
risks while improving municipal service delivery, enhancing human health and well-being, and protecting
biodiversity. NbS projects range from protecting natural assets (such as wetlands, watersheds and forests) to
building green infrastructure (such as engineered ponds and green/blues roofs). The team will develop and
evaluate the framework for application at watershed, community, neighbourhood, and building scales and
provide tools and resources for government and private sector leaders to implement NbS across Canada.

Anti-Inflammatory and Immunomodulatory role of Protein Hydrolysates: Involvement of microRNAs and Gut Microbiome

Studies related to the gut-lung axis have spiraled in the recent year, especially with current challenges related to COVID-19. The role of an optimal microbiome status for a well-functioning immune system is now emerging as a crucial factor to protect against immune-deregulation and infection in sites distant from the intestine. Therefore, this project aims to study the potential role of microbiota-driven immune changes in the gut-lung axis by administration of egg protein hydrolysates from eggshell membranes. The main objective of the project is to better characterize the immunomodulatory and protective effect of eggshell protein hydrolysates on modulating immunoprotective effects and preventing injury caused by inflammatory insult in the gut and the lung. We will perform studies by using animal exposed to inflammatory and immune challenge. The effects of the hydrolysates on preventing acute and long-term consequences of disruption in immune system response will be assessed on immune parameters in intestine and lung levels, gut microbiota, and epigenetic regulation. The hydrolysates from eggshell is derived from agriculture waste in Canada. Egg farmers could indirectly benefit from it by increasing awareness of the health benefits that could be attributable to this waste product with potential applications as immune-supporting nutritional supplement.

Development of Improved Electrolytes for Zinc-Ion Batteries

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising candidates for storing significant amounts of electricity, since zinc (Zn) is widely available and inexpensive. ZIBs typically use a high-capacity Zn metal anode, metal oxide positive electrode, and aqueous electrolyte, with energy/power densities similar to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). ZIBs offer advantages over LIBs, including improved safety, eco-friendliness and simpler manufacturing conditions. There are, however, drawbacks that restrict practical application of rechargeable ZIBs. These include relatively poor efficiency, the formation of byproducts, and poor cycling behaviour due to reactions associated with the metal oxide electrodes during battery cycling. One approach to improving ZIB performance is to modify the electrolyte through the use of additives or to design and implement new types of electrolytes. This work, which is a joint effort between Salient Energy, Inc. and researchers at the University of Alberta, is focused on developing alternative electrolytes for ZIBs, with the goal of producing better batteries.

Analyse de segmentation de données philanthropiques pour Les Grands Ballets Canadiens

Le projet propose une analyse de segmentation des donateurs individuels des Grands Ballets Canadiens. L’analyse sera effectuée avec des données personnelles détenues par l’organisme. Ultimement, un portrait des différents types de donateurs (et de leur profitabilité) ainsi que des recommandations concrètes seront formulées afin de mieux cibler les donateurs individuels et de répartir efficacement les ressources de l’organisme, notamment en termes d’effort en communication et en événementiel. Par ailleurs, des recommandations quant aux indicateurs de performance à consulter régulièrement pour faciliter la prise de décision serviront à mieux guider la future gestion des efforts marketing du département de financement.

Système automatisé d’extraction des modules en mauvaise santé dans les batteries usagées de véhicule électrique dédié au développement d’une source de 250kWh

Afin de réduire l’empreinte environnementale, l’électrification des transports est une solution pour réduire les
changements climatiques mais qui apporte aussi un problème majeur, soit un apport de batteries difficilement
recyclables. Le projet de recherche propose un reconditionnement des batteries usagées des véhicules électriques par
un remplacement des modules dont la santé est inadéquate dans des applications de stockage d’énergie renouvelable
dont la densité d’énergie est moins critique que dans le transport. En ce sens, Énergie Positive souhaite concevoir
une station automatisée de reconditionnement considérant différentes sortes de batteries tout en réduisant au
minimum l’implication d’humain dans le démontage et le remontage d’une batterie.

Improving usability and interoperability of autonomous and remote operated marine survey vessels

The popularity of autonomous survey vessels (ASVs) are rapidly increasing due to their low-cost, efficiency, ease of operations, and safety benefits. These systems are applied to ocean mapping survey operations that would have traditionally been completed by small, crewed vessels using either single beam or multibeam echosounder systems. To maintain the simplicity of the ASV, the remote-controlled propulsion system is often separate from the onboard sonar and positioning hardware system. This project looks to bridge the gap between the navigation, sonar, and propulsion systems by implementing low-cost and energy efficient single-board computers to capture, process and transmit data streams. The project objectives look to maintain existing system hardware but add intelligence in navigation and data processing functionality without hindering run-time and operational capability. The developed systems and implementation design will add value to low-cost ASVs by introducing line following and autopilot functionality, along with data processing, analytics, and cloud connectivity.

Optimisation des chantiers d’abattage du projet Upper Beaver d’Osisko

Un chantier d’abattage correpond au volume de minerai extrait lors de l’exploitation de la mine souterraine entre deux niveaux successifs. La rentabilité d’une mine est fortement liée à la délimitation la meilleure possible de ces chantiers. Le projet vise à appliquer une nouvelle méthode de définition des chantiers d’abattage qui incorpore directement les contraintes minières, et donc qui tient compte de l’inévitable dilution associée, dans l’optimisation. La méthode s’inspire des méthodes éprouvées utilisées pour les mines à ciel ouvert. Il devrait en résulter des chantiers dont l’emplacement et l’extension horizontale sont optimaux. Le projet permettra aussi de déterminer quel intervalle doit être utilisé entre les différents niveaux pour maximiser les revenus, tenant compte des coûts croissants pour des niveaux plus rapprochés. Il devrait résulter de ce projet une meilleure défintion des chantiers, un choix optimal de l’espacement entre les niveaux et donc une rentabilité accrue pour la mine.

Geospatial and machine learning methods in traumatic brain injury prediction and prevention in Nova Scotia

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability. One area of injury prevention research is to use geographic information systems to identify at-risk neighbourhoods for targeted intervention. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the geographical distribution of TBI in Canada. The proposed project is based on the linked trauma registry data, emergency medical service data and Canadian census data, which contains about 4500 TBI patients from year 2002-2018. TBI incidence will be mapped by age, sex, and major mechanisms of injury (e.g., falls or motor vehicle collisions) over years to identify high risk geographic areas of TBI. Bayesian spatial regression models will be applied to investigate to what extent the spatial pattern of TBI risk is attributable to neighborhood-level factors. Further, machine learning methods will be used to predict in-hospital mortality and hospital length of stay in TBI patients for preventing future most severe outcomes among TBI patients.

Walk with Me: Storying the Toxic Drug Poisoning Crisis

This project will support enhancements to and documentation of Walk with Me, a Community Based Research Initiative that brings attention to the toxic drug poisoning crisis through an arts framework. Both interns will build upon the project findings in phase I, to model new human centred modes of community collaboration, reduce harm and stigma caused by the toxic drug crisis, and give voice to those with lived and living experience. Further benefiting the Comox Valley Art Gallery by advancing it’s role in addressing local social justice issues within a small town/city.

An integrated platform for processing pilot trainee’s biometric data

Training and simulation technologies in the field of aviation are evolving towards more human centered solutions where promoting an optimal learning experience is given high priority. Considering the limited availability of flight instructors, the cost in teaching a pilot trainee heavily depends on the effectiveness and efficiency of the training. This requires a timely feedback about the trainee’s status in learning. The development of a platform integrated of methods for inferring pilot’s cognitive/affective states during flight simulation can help the instructors gain a better understanding of pilot trainee’s behaviors. In this way, instructors can provide required corrections and adjustments during the training process to fit different trainee’s learning styles and progresses. The success of this project will significantly improve the quality and reduce the cost of pilot training.

Simulation Boursière : Développement d’un outil d’analyse pour la performance des investisseurs

Boursify est une plateforme de simulation boursière qui permet à des groupes corporatifs et à des étudiants de vivre l’immersion complète dans l’univers boursier en transigeant les actions d’une économie fictives le temps d’une journée. Comme l’économie dans laquelle s’exerce chaque compétition diffère d’une simulation à l’autre, la façon dont les participants réagissent aux marchés et l’appréciation globale peuvent varier d’une simulation à l’autre.
Le but de la recherche est ainsi d’améliorer le processus de génération des scénarios boursiers afin d’offrir une expérience plus adaptée aux participants, sois en offrant 1- un niveau de difficulté convenant à l’expertise des investisseurs et 2- une rétroaction personnalisée à la performance individuelle du participant, pourvue de conseils financiers et de ressources éducatives appropriées.
Le stagiaire travaillera sur la construction d’un outil de rétroaction personnalisé offrant des conseils financiers et des recommandations spécifiques à la performance financière d’un portefeuille financier simulé conjoint à chaque individu. Le développement de cet outil de diagnostic permettra de mieux identifier les forces et les faiblesses d’un joueur afin d’offrir à ce dernier la possibilité de mieux se connaître en tant qu’investisseur et d’être guidée vers des ressources appropriées.

Assessing foliar fungicide mobility and persistence in wild blueberries

Foliar diseases in the vegetative year such as Sphaerulina leaf spot, leaf rust and Valdensia leaf spot pose problems to wild blueberry growers in Atlantic Canada. The pathogens that cause foliar disease infect the leaf tissue and create chlorotic or necrotic areas that prevent the plant from photosynthesizing. When a plant cannot photosynthesize, it is unable to create sufficient amounts of carbohydrates required to produce blueberries, ultimately reducing harvestable yields. Fungicides are a chemical control option that growers can use to prevent foliar diseases. To date no research has been conducted on the mobility and persistence of foliar fungicides used on wild blueberry. The purpose of this project is to determine, 1) which fungicides have the greatest trans cuticular movement, allowing for increase mobility, 2) how do these fungicides move within the leaf tissue, and 3) how long do fungicides persist in the leaf tissue. A combination of field trials and laboratory experiments will be used to answer these questions. The findings of this project will be used to make recommendations to growers and guide future research to better understand the mechanisms for increased fungicide efficacy.
