RetinaLogik Biotech – Kalpita Reddiar

RetinaLogik Biotech Inc. is a social enterprise based out of Calgary, Alberta. We believe everyone deserves access to quality vision care: With RetinaLogik software, life-changing eye exams can be delivered on intelligent and portable devices at a fraction of the cost.

As we approach the beginning of our clinical trials, we see this as excellent timing to bring on additional support to help us gather in-depth structured market intelligence and standardize our marketing materials (user guides, pitch decks, etc) so we are prepared and informed for a smooth transition from clinical trials to successful market launch.

Impact Investing Housing Fund – Data Analytics

Ayrshire is an investment management firm focused principally on real estate investing in Alberta. We own retail,
office and residential properties in multiple markets. Recently we have seen a shift in investment demand associated with new acquisition and developments of multifamily apartment housing in Western Canada. Recently Ayrshire received federal funding through CHMC Rental Construction Financing Program to build affordable housing units for a project located in the Beverly community in Edmonton. Given it’s strong performance and impact investing nature, Ayrhsire has undergone research to raise capital for an Impact investing fund focused on core needs housing to service Canadian’s through affordable housing, seniors housing, student housing, accessible needs housing, etc. Given subsidy programs and available public private partnerships opportunities emerging in Western Canadian urban centers, there are strong tailwinds and an opportunistic time to be investing in multifamily developments that have measurable social impacts. We are needing an intern to help gather economic and financial data to help identify markets where Ayrshire’s investment thesis is supported. This research may be specific to some opportunities in our deal pipeline but will generally be focused on relative fundamentals important to real property markets. We have actively been looking for ways to effectively participate in impact investment and and need resources to deliver the quality of analysis that our executive team is expecting.

Comparison of Pilot Scale and Industrial Trial Results for Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) Development.

Developing new high performance steels using pilot scale facilities such as those available at CanmetMATERIALS laboratory in Hamilton is more efficient and cost effective than using industrial lines. However, some recent projects carried out for Stelco Inc revealed unexpected discrepancies between pilot scale results and real industrial data. The aim of this project is to identify the best strategies to minimize these discrepancies between the pilot scale and industrial processes so that our laboratory simulations more closely approach the final product in terms of structure and properties.

Development of Business Strategy and Create Market Penetration of Ecofriendly and Sustainably Produced Coffee Beans.

Forest Bean Inc. is a Canadian Coffee Startup Company with the overarching goal of preserving the environment while growing coffee and the ever-fragile ecosystems surrounding it. The company has emphasized the preservation of biodiversity to demonstrate that they can maintain a thriving ecosystem on their coffee farm while providing high-quality artisan coffee beans. The project will be implemented to help increase market penetration and digital media landscape of Forest Bean Inc. This project will also focus on assisting with business strategies to increase the sales success of Forest Bean Inc. and furture planning strategies to implement towards brand presence among retail businesses in the market. Forest Bean Inc. strives to be a customer friendly company by providing trust to our customers by offering a transparent sustainable business with healthier coffee options that taste great.
Forest Bean Inc. main objectives for this project include:

Délégitimer pour mieux régner ? Étude comparée des processus de répression des formes renouvelées de lutte contre le racisme en France et au Québec

Depuis le début des années 2000, plusieurs éléments ont participé, à ce que je présente comme étant, la reconfiguration de l’espace de la cause antiraciste en France et Québec, tel que, la rupture avec les formes plus institutionnalisées de lutte contre le racisme, ainsi qu’une recomposition sociologique des nouvelles organisations qui sont portées par des individus qui se rassemblent sur la base de leur expérience vécue du racisme et de la discrimination.
Cette reconfiguration dans l’architecture des groupes antiraciste en France et au Québec a contribué à relancer et à réactualiser le débat autour des modalités et des acteur.ice.s légitimes à s’engager dans la lutte contre le racisme. Ces débats, qui s’expriment souvent sous forme de conflits politiques, montrent l’existence d’une véritable convergence des opinions dans la disqualification et la répression de ces mobilisations. On retrouve cette convergence autant chez les acteurs à l’extrême droite de l’échiquier politique (partis politiques, groupuscules, groupes), que dans les discours gouvernementaux, certains médias de masse, jusqu’à certaines associations ou organismes communautaires plus institutionnalisés qui se réclament de la lutte contre le racisme et les discriminations.

Direct Air CO2 Capture Using Supported In-situ Polymerized Amines into MOFs

The issue of removal of CO2 from diluted streams is challenging due its low concentration which makes the cost of capture significantly high. The development of material that has high CO2 capacity at low concentrations can help to decrease the overall cost of CO2 capture. The novel approach in the design of solid sorbents proposed in this study will provide a new class of highly effective materials for direct air CO2 capture (DAC) applications. This is the first study that address the in-situ polymerization of amines into metal organic frameworks (MOFs). Detailed understanding of controlled in-situ polymerization and optimizing the synthesis will significantly help in producing efficient materials. The in-situ polymerization approach can help the advancement of DAC materials because it can be used to design tailor-made materials with improved stabilities. The developed materials will ultimately reduce the overall cost of DAC technology, to accelerate its deployment as an effective method to reduce GHGs emissions.

Recommandation de pratiques d’évaluation et de recherche terrain pour un projet de coopération internationale auprès de Desjardins

L’organisme partenaire effectuant de projets de coopération internationale, Desjardins, possède des protocoles de collecte de données non à jour quant aux bonnes pratiques. L’organisation a atteint le stage final de son projet de micro-financement au Bénin Appui au développement, à l’assainissement et à la professionnalisation du secteur de la microfinance (ADAPAMI) et doit mettre sur pied une évaluation de projet qui passe immanquablement par de la collecte de données qualitatives et quantitatives sur le terrain. En plus, du besoin de rafraichir les pratiques de Desjardins, l’organisation souhaite préconiser une expertise externe afin de développer la méthodologie à suivre lors de la collecte de donnée qui sera effectuée par une firme auditrice béninoise. L’expertise de l’École de politique appliquée, à travers une stagiaire de 2e cycle, saura combler le besoin de mise à niveau de la rigueur analytique de l’organisation en offrant notamment des recommandations méthodologiques.

Legal, regulatory and ethical framework for a health tech startup

More than 2 million Canadians require personal assistance at home because of age or disability, with at least 15% of them reporting having unmet needs. When needs go unmet, we know that people are unable to maintain employment because they cannot predict their schedule. We know that they experience significant stress and mental health challenges as a result of feeling like a burden on friends and family or – without that safety net – worrying like they may not be able to get out of bed the next day because no one will show up. We also know that unmet needs can spiral into more serious health complications requiring hospitalization and intensive resources on our healthcare systems when issues like pressure sores and urinary tract infections are left unchecked.

Mira4Good’s goal is to build a back up system for personal assistance in the form of a marketplace platform that connects the demand side of people in need of personal assistance with the supply side of caregivers via a mobile app, essentially an Uber for attendants called “Tendr”. Tendr’s creation will facilitate a world in which people with physical disabilities get their needs met wherever they are and whenever they want.

The purpose of this project is to map out a legal, regulatory and ethical operating framework for use by Tendr’s internal and external stakeholders.

Evaluating the status and trend of caribou habitat in Alberta’s boreal woodland caribou ranges.

Human land use is leading to the decline of many species, such as Canada’s Threatened boreal woodland caribou. Habitat alteration as a result of human land use has degraded predator-prey dynamics, leading to unsustainable predation of caribou. Given the link between caribou declines and habitat alteration, habitat management –protection and restoration – is a critical component of the recovery of this species. Key to effectively managing caribou habitat and assessing progress towards recovery goals is to assess the status of critical habitat over time. Our research will develop and apply techniques to quantify caribou habitat and understand what limits and promotes vegetation recovery on human-altered habitat. We will then use this information to project changes in caribou habitat over time to understand the timelines and effort needed to reach habitat recovery targets. Understanding the current state and projected trend of caribou habitat will be needed to effectively manage habitat.

Stage en entreprise visant la croissance stratégique de LBB

LBB Stratégies est une firme d’experts conseils en stratégie et performance organisationnelle, études stratégiques, événements sportifs, infrastructures et droit du sport œuvrant et intervenant auprès de clients locaux à internationaux principalement en sport, loisir et vie active.

LBB désire ainsi renforcer sa présence sur le marché québécois, canadien et international. LBB notamment vise à créer des divisions événements sportifs, installations, stratégie et droit du sport. Depuis le printemps 2020, un stagiaire soutenu par MITACS a contribué à la croissance de LBB au plan des études, mandats et des planifications stratégiques et du développement d’affaire de LBB. LBB désire donc rehausser son développement de marchés dans les créneaux précités.

LBB n’a pas été affectée par la pandémie et a su rapidement pivoter pour offrir à ses clients des services adaptés à leur situation, notamment en gestion de risque et agilité des processus d’affaires.

C’est dans ce contexte que LBB désire s’adjoindre d’un nouveau membre stagiaire dans son équipe afin de la soutenir dans la réalisation de ses objectifs de croissance notamment en événements, infrastructures, stratégie et droit du sport.
