Design and fabrication of a wearable device (Watch HOP) for critical care, surgery and chronic disease monitoring

Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, which leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves over time. It is estimated that around 10% of Canadians have diabetes, which is 1 of the 10 leading causes of death globally. While diabetes is highly prevalent, it is also seriously undiagnosed and mismanaged since only 50% of people with diabetes are aware that they have the condition.
Diabetes can be diagnosed using serum glucose measurement, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting glucose, and/or oral glucose tolerance testing, which are invasive protocols that require blood drawing and are mostly limited to point-of-care clinical visits. Moreover, to date there is no way of assessing daily or weekly progression of the condition and efficacy of the assigned treatment. In recent years, wearable devices have gained great interest in the medical industry and academic community due to their ability to collect data in order to create algorithms that may be used to predict health outcomes and facilitate the detection and monitoring of chronic diseases such as diabetes.

Advanced Aluminium Alloy Twin Roll Casting Lubricant

The proposed project aims at developing a new type of lubricant to be used for twin-roll casting with the advantage of providing a better flexibility for the choice of aluminum alloys currently used in twin-roll casting. The biggest advantage is to reduce the energy demand as the liquid aluminum alloy can be directly processed at high speed by twin roll casting without the necessity of a reheat cycle. Another objective of the proposed project is to provide a higher heat transfer to the liquid aluminium twin-rolled casted associated to a more uniform controlled grain growth to provide a high mechanical strength after processing.

Pathways to accelerate the diffusion of demand-side low-carbon innovations and socio-technical energy system change

This research is intended to investigate the pathways to accelerate the diffusion of demand-side low-carbon innovations and socio-technical energy system change. Specifically, we want to map out whether innovations are pertinent, which can reinforce each other, which policies, stakeholders and legitimacy factors help them and their interactions. The variables that the innovations were coded for can be considered “score cards” to analyse whether an innovation has potential for system disruption or reinforcement, and the level of policy and legitimacy support it receives. This project plans to analyse the relative diffusion rates of complementary innovations that are required to support renewable energy and electric vehicle deployment and also identify challenges to mapping and implementing pathways. For example, despite rigorous desk research and stakeholder engagement, our research reveals a critical lack of dissemination rate data, a critical variable to measure our mitigation responses.

Antifouling Performance of Graphene-based Coatings in Varying Flow Conditions

Marine biofouling, which is the growth of organisms on ocean infrastructure, is a widespread problem with
substantial economic and environmental costs. This project undertaken by the intern will develop dynamic tests
of a novel graphene-based antifouling coating designed by Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT). The
dynamic tests involve generating water flow over the coating surface, better mimicking real-life conditions for the
antifouling coating. The 3rd generation GIT coating is designed to be non-toxic, durable, and slippery, making it
difficult for biofouling organisms to attach. A series of field tests will be used to help in the research and
development process, refining the antifouling and durability characteristics of the coating. These real-world tests
will benefit GIT helping to refine their technology and generating valuable information for marketing purposes

Efficacy of mental well-being interventions provided by CheckingIn, a smart device application

Smart device applications show great promise as a means to improve the mental health and well-being
of users. CheckingIn is one such app. CheckingIn monitors self-reported daily mood states of users and
suggests exercises to improve user’s mental health and well-being. Although the app’s well-being programs are
scientifically informed, there is a general lack of research investigating how effective such apps are in improving
mental health. Therefore, CheckingIn requires more research to examine the effectiveness of their app’s mental
health programs. The goal of the present project is to evaluate changes in the mental health of application users
after completing CheckingIn’s 30-day well-being program. In doing so CheckingIn will be able to determine how
effective the program is. The results should ultimately improve the quality of well-being programs provided to
application users.
