With COVID-19 accelerating the adoption and expansion of eCommerce selling channels, traditional retail businesses have been forced to adapt very quickly. Companies have to start re-thinking how they approach eCommerce and online selling in order to tap into new, high growth revenue streams. By pivoting and creating an online eCommerce selling presence, SME’s can use COVID-19 disruptions as a tailwind for robust revenue growth, rather than having it as a revenue blocker. This project will look to help the partner organization maintain and grow their eCommerce selling channels, expand internationally into new country markets using eCommerce marketplaces, build out a better online social media strategy, and create a loyalty program for online customers.

HUMAN beIngS trafficking and Minor sexual exploitation (HUMANISM)

Human trafficking and sexual exploitation are serious and complex issues affecting millions of children around the world. Unfortunately, scientists, Child protection workers (CPWs), law enforcement personnel, and other experts are currently struggling to effectively prevent these crimes and ensure the rehabilitation of vulnerable children. One of the main hurdles impeding their efforts is the current lack of accurate information on the subject. Indeed, no consensus exists on the most important risk factors to consider in prevention efforts, or even, how many people are trafficked and exploited each year around the world. More importantly, too few projects currently link computer experts and social scientists to aid police in their investigative efforts. To address this gap, the HUMAN beIngS trafficking and Minor sexual exploitation (HUMANISM) project was created by an international and multidisciplinary team of experts coordinated by Dr. Aziz Essadek. As a Mitacs Globalink Research Award recipient, I will be involved in mapping out and reviewing existing academic scholarship, contrasting policies and practices between Canada and France, participating in data analysis and synthesis, and collaborating in creating knowledge dissemination tools. I will contribute to building a common base of knowledge that professionals from TOBECONT’.

Development of novel nonlinear time-tenses for ultrafast signal processing applications

Manipulation and characterization of ultrafast optical signals are fundamental procedures for a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, biology, quantum information science, spectroscopy, and atomic and molecular physics. In this context, the so-called theory of space-time duality offers a powerful framework for the development of important optical signal processing functionalities. One of its key elements is the time-lens (TL). A TL is the time-domain equivalent of a spatial thin lens, namely, a device that imparts a quadratic temporal phase modulation to an optical signal. This project will address the performance enhancement of the time-bandwidth product of TLs, allowing the improvement of all kind of measurement devices and signal-processing tools involving the use of a TL. This have a great interest in modern science and technology, since it will enable the development of advanced signal-processing systems, which will allow unveiling the underlying physics of ultrafast transient and non-repetitive interesting phenomena.

Implication of Epigenetic Dysregulation in Early Embryo Development

The project aims to identify the interdependence that exist between epigenetic modifications that regulate gene expression, as well as their susceptibilities to permanent disruption following errors in the embryonic program. We use an innovative embryonic stem cell model in which the expression of an epigenetic enzyme responsible for DNA methylation can be controlled. We will define at high resolution the chronology and evolution of epigenetic disruption in embryonic cells. Beyond standard techniques molecular biology, sequencing approaches (Methyl-Seq, ChIP-Seq) coupled with bioinformatic analyzes will be exploited to establish detailed signatures for the DNA methylation and histone modifications. Under the guidance of a senior Postdoc, the student will participate in various aspects (experiments, analyses) of this project. By finely dissecting the epigenetic dysregulation mechanisms in embryonic stem cells, we aim to identify which epigenetic modifications are likely to be dysregulated in early embryos and how this could lead to adverse development.

Intestinal autoinflammation

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, is characterized by chronic, relapsing, or progressive inflammation of the intestine. Canada has among the highest incidences and prevalence of IBD in the world with as many as 1 in 160 people with disease [1]. In ulcerative colitis, inflammation predominantly occurs in the epithelial cell lining of the colon, whereas in Crohn’s Disease extends through the entire thickness of the gut wall and most frequently occurs in the distal ileum. These sequelae cause intestinal dysfunction and/or obstruction that requires surgery in 1 in 3 patients with Crohn’s Disease within 10 years of diagnosis. Tremendous strides have been made in dampening down inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases to reduce symptoms but the underlying cause(s) of disease remains unknown. Up to 40% of people with inflammatory bowel disease are predicted to become refractory to all available treatments [2-4].

Establishment of an X-ray CT and FTIR mouse brain reference atlas

The intern will construct a 3D atlas of the mouse brain, constructed using multiple biomedical and chemical imaging techniques. The atlas will aid visualization of the 3D distribution of brain metabolites and biomolecules.. The atlas will be a powerful research and teaching resource with its multi disciplinary approach to processing and visualizing data collected at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron. Biochemical imaging of the brain’s regional composition and metabolic processes will reveal new structural and functional information. The atlas will also serve as a control reference for the Saskatchewan Cerebrovascular Centre’s ongoing stroke research. Integrated supply chain planning and scheduling for construction projects

The importance of Supply Chain Management in improving construction management performance has been recognized since the 1990s. However, construction projects still take a longer time to finish and overrun the allocated budget. Moreover, construction projects suffer from a lack of supply chain integration. Thus, the construction industry has a significant need for effective construction supply chain management, which increases collaboration among its participants. Therefore, in this research project, we will consider supply chain integration that deals with the concurrent problem of real-time scheduling and supply chain planning for construction projects.
The outcome is developing an integrated supply chain coordination technique for scheduling and for pre-construction planning and project execution with the continuous update from the construction site. Développement d’un outil de suivi du profil d’acides gras du lait de vaches individuelles

Le projet de maîtrise de la candidate a pour objectif de fournir les connaissances et balises nécessaires au développement d’un outil de suivi de la vache en période de transition. Cet outil abordable et efficace sera développé à partir de la composition en acides gras (AG) du lait. La période de transition étant reconnue comme l’étape critique du cycle de lactation de la vache, un meilleur suivi des animaux à ce stade offrirait aux producteurs laitiers la possibilité d’ajuster rapidement le régime de leur élevage. Les problèmes de reproduction, de production et d’immunité en début de lactation sont effectivement associés à des pertes financières très significatives. Plus spécifiquement, ce projet servira à décrire les relations entre le profil d’AG du lait déterminé par spectroscopie infrarouge à transformées de Fourier (FTIR) et des indicateurs du succès de la période de transition telles les teneurs plasmatiques en bêta-hydroxybutyrate et en AG libres. Des relations sont aussi à établir entre la composition en AG du lait et des mesures de production, de reproduction et de santé des vaches individuelles. Dietary mercury and declining Leach’s storm-petrel numbers: toxicological and spatial implications

Leach’s storm-petrels are tiny, iconic seabirds found from the Bay of Fundy through Labrador in eastern Canada, and forage hundreds of kilometres offshore. Numbers of birds at some colonies have declined by >30% over the past two decades; the reason for these declines remain very unclear. Among the possible factors thought to be negatively influencing storm-petrels is mercury (Hg), a neurotoxic element that some studies have shown is high in this species. This project is a collaborative examination of tissue sampling from 5 colonies across storm-petrels range in Canada, to determine Hg levels, how that relates to diet in each area, and assess whether this contaminant may be influencing local populations. It will deliver on some of Canada’ needs for reporting under national and international legislation related to birds and contamination.

Red River Co-op’s Marketing and Operations Revamp

Some of the challenges that Red River Co-op is facing are their marketing of their local program and the lack of consistent structure in the grocery stores (SOPs). While, Red River Co-op has fresh and high quality of products, they are unable to communicate to their consumer base. Safeway and Sobeys, local competitors, are marketing to the same consumers. The global pandemic has affected the business as well as its employees and I would be able to help Red River Co-op pivot their business model to being more flexible so that they would be able to tackle times of crisis such as this with a fresh mindset and positive attitude. In this way, I would be able to address their marketing needs, improve the standardization of structures, logistics and supply chains as well as give them a competitive advantage in the market.
