Part A. Mapping Economic, social, and health ecosystem and agencies in
Greater Saint John Project
Outcomes:
1. Understand the interdependencies amongst the actors and the customers they serve creating awareness and transparency in the components of the larger system
2. Move from a linear approach to a systems perspective to assist in understanding
who is addressing what problem, seeking alignment addressing the needs
3.Create a platform for dialogue and actions providing potential cost savings, enhanced employee and stakeholder engagement, alignment of actors and a mindset and behaviour that we are strong together.
Like most communities Saint John has a significant number of organizations , businesses, agencies, volunteers and levels of government all coping with covid 19 in the now,
near and the far. While all well intended the citizens, employees, businesses- large and small, the government employees, the volunteers, the out of work, do not have a clear understanding of where to go for help . For example in the economic pillar there are numerous govt agencies that are all working hard in a reactive mode resulting in frustration, confusion, increased cost and duplication.

Development of a subject-centered social media and network platform

Developing subject-based social media requires proper interaction with the users by learning and analyzing their profile and dynamically incorporating their opinion. In this project, a crowd-based profiling of users with respect to their peers will be developed and confidence factor calculated based on the collective opinion of the crowd will be assigned to the individuals’ opinion. There is a prototype system already developed as a proof of idea. The intern will enhance the prototype by adding new functions and modules to it. In the first phase of this project, there are two specific tasks assigned for the intern; (1) Item/Subject Time Wall Display (an alternative display for the item page), (2) Automation of identification of parents vs Child subjects OR Time line display for subjects and its associated events. Each task should take about two months to complete.

Commercial Process Optimisation of Lithium Extraction and Refining from Saskatchewan Brine Deposits

With the growth in demand for electric vehicles and mobile devices powered by rechargeable lithium batteries, demand for lithium is expected to increase by over 200% in the next decade. Current lithium production comes primarily from Australia, South America and China. There are significant lithium reserves in the same Saskatchewan aquifers currently being exploited for their concomitant oil reserves. Although the lithium concentration in these aquifers is lower than in brines being mined elsewhere, new lithium selective extraction technologies show great promise for making extraction of lithium from these aquifers economical. Prairie Lithium has previously identified a lithium selective ion exchange material that can extract more than 99% of the lithium in a brine sample in only 4 minutes. We have also carried out a successful field trial of our proprietary technology at a scale of 50 m3/day of brine. This field trial represents the first successful extraction of lithium at an operating oil and gas facility in Saskatchewan. The project described here involves further optimization of all aspects of the lithium extraction, recovery, and refining process in support of the full commercial deployment of our proprietary technology.

Evaluation of geomorphic assessment methods and geomorphic performance of river restoration designs in mountain streams in British Columbia

River restoration in the steep mountain streams of British Columbia focuses on enhancing conditions for fish habitat, including salmon spawning habitat. These restoration projects are designed using 2D hydraulic models, but their performance during large flood events is relatively unknown. This project will use a set of laboratory experiments to assess the performance of common designs under large flood events. A scaled model of a restoration design will be built, and the sediment transport and topographic change of the channel during simulated floods will be measured. The project will provide the partner organization with an assessment of the current models and methodologies used to design and monitor river restoration projects.

The Impacts of Roads and Farming on Raised Bog Hydrology

This project will investigate the impacts of historical land use on Langley Bog to better understand how these unique ecosystems are affected by cranberry farming and fill roads. Bogs require a high water table and high acidity to maintain conditions suitable for bog-specific vegetation to grow. To determine whether the site is moving away from bog habitat, water levels, water quality, and vegetation will be monitored for four months across twelve different locations using a series of ground wells. Given the rarity of this ecosystem, this research will ultimately provide recommendations to the partner organization on how to restore Langley Bog.

Soil, Water and Topography Maps as a Management Tool to Improve Profitability and Sustainability within the Potato Industry

The proposed research will explore opportunities in measuring spatial variability in soil, water and topography within potato fields. Addressing this variability by doing site specific application of inputs such as fertilizer, crop protectant and seed can help to increase environmental sustainability and economic viability in potato production. This research will help develop new applications for SWAT mapping in potatoes all over the world.
