Marketing/Business Development Intern

Vitacore is a collaborative corporation made up of scientists, engineers, doctors, and business leaders, with the primary goal of domestically manufacturing high-quality healthcare products and personal protective equipment (PPE). COVID-19 has created massive shortages of PPE around the world with counties blocking exports, widespread substandard products, bidding wars, and pandemic profiteering. By manufacturing locally from raw materials Vitacore is providing Canada with a reliable & consistent supply of PPE that avoids geopolitics, has the highest level of quality control, creates local jobs, reduces lead time, and is at a lower cost.

Impact of Lumbar Vibrotactile Plantar Sensory Substitution System on Gait and Balance

Peripheral neuropathy is a medical condition that leads to a loss of sensation in the feet. Due to this loss, patients suffering from this condition are at an increased risk of falling due to impaired control of posture and gait function. Orpyx Medical Technologies Inc. has developed a biomedical device to substitute the sensory loss in the feet. The device consists of pressure sensing insoles that provide real-time feedback to the patient about the pressure distribution at the feet. The main objective of this collaboration is to investigate the effectiveness of the device to improve postural control and gait function in patients with peripheral neuropathy. These results directly contribute to the understanding of the medical device and facilitate an application for patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy with the ultimate goal of improving their quality of life.

Criterium Group – Analyst/Junior Consultant

Since the first case in Alberta, COVID-19 has impacted everyone, especially the most vulnerable. At Criterium Group, we pride ourselves on our resiliency; with our agile structure and ways of working, we have been able to adapt to these challenging times. In light of the pandemic, we have focused on working with our clients to support their strategy development and adapt their structures and processes, so they too can be resilient. In addition to supporting current projects in both the private and public sector, one client and partnership we want to support even further and highlight is the United Way of Calgary and Area (UWCA).
UWCA has had to shift their focus on dealing with the crisis at hand and requires consultancy support in paving the way for even greater resilience in the future. Criterium Group is proposing to hire four to five interns from the top Canadian universities to consult for UWCA. Criterium Group would cover the costs and would provide consulting services to UWCA as pro bono. Specifically, the Criterium Group interns would support the Social Impact Lab (Lab) and Digital Transition initiatives.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance BSI Project

The main objective of this project is to comprise a document that illustrates a recommended program framework for SGI to implement that will measure and monitor Corporate Claims. This will be accomplished through conducting research of industry best practices within the insurance sector and comparing and contrasting these practices with one another. Additionally, information will be gathered from claims operations from both SGI Auto Fund and SGI Canada insurance departments. Through this research and collaboration, a comparison of potential alternatives will be looked at which will most likely involve a cost-benefit analysis. From all of this, a recommended framework will be developed for SGI to put into place, which will monitor and measure claims within the organization.

Improving Construction Permitting Process using Predictive Analytics

In public sector, the decision making of construction permitting can have direct impacts on the ongoing urban development. The efficiency and predictability of the review process is critical for municipalities to provide timely and accurate results to the public. As the review process is managed digitally with process data available, using data analytics to develop predictive models can result in improvement of efficiency and predictability. Therefore, the City of Edmonton collaborates with the University of New Brunswick on a research project to utilize simulation techniques to provide predictive analytics to assist construction permit decision making. A Discrete Event Simulation (DES) will be used to represent the construction permit procedures virtually and incorporate historical and real-time data to predict the permit processing time. The developed simulation engine will be able to run what-if analysis to improve resource assignment in the permit review process, and eventually reduce the inefficiencies and bottlenecks. The develop simulation model will be integrated with the City of Edmonton’s existing operating system to provide timely decision support information for its construction permit review process.
