Management of ecosystem services of Haute Mauricie region in Quebec

Forest ecosystems are not only a source of timber, it also provides other societal benefits such as regulation of water quality, soil quality maintenance, climate regulation and pollination among many others. However, these services are not static and they change across time and space depending on the nature and extent of the changes in land use and land cover. This study in Mauricie region of Quebec will examine how ecosystem services has changed over the past decades, how they look like at present and what are the possible future scenarios. This study is expected to generate valuable information for sustainable management strategies that will enhance the resilience of forests in the Mauricie administrative region to future disturbances.

Bio-Optimized Technologies to keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment

This project aims to develop a new technology for the production of biodegradable plastics that can decompose under various natural conditions, including soil and oceans, by up to 90%, which minimizes plastic waste and its environmental footprint. The technology will first target application in food packaging and drink containers, which is a main market for sing-use plastics and a key source of plastic waste. The project will allow Oligomaster, a Canadian technical start-up and the industrial partner on the project, to be a technical leader in the field of sustainable polymer production. It will also prepare the interns for transitioning to industrial careers in an promising area of the polymer industry.

Développement d’un dispositif de soutien aux parents pour soutenir le cheminement scolaire de leurs enfants

Le projet de recherche porte sur le soutien des parents dans le cheminement scolaire de leurs enfants qui évoluent au primaire ou au secondaire. Il vise ainsi trois objectifs : 1) comprendre l’expérience parentale en matière de soutien à la persévérance de leurs enfants; 2) identifier les besoins des parents concernant le soutien à la persévérance scolaire de leurs enfants; 3) développer un dispositif de soutien pour les parents afin qu’ils puissent mieux accompagner leurs enfants dans leur cheminement scolaire. Suivant les principes méthodologiques de la recherche-développement, nous désirons joindre 40 parents d’enfants du primaire et du secondaire de la région de Lanaudière lors de groupes de discussion pour mieux connaître leur expérience parentale et leurs besoins en matière de soutien scolaire de leurs enfants. De plus, les participants seront impliqués dans le développement d’un dispositif de soutien en réponse aux besoins exprimés concernant l’accompagnement de leurs enfants dans leur cheminement scolaire. Réalisé avec la participation du CRÉVALE (Comité régional pour la valorisation de l’éducation), ce projet contribuera à optimiser leur offre de ressources concernant le soutien de parents dans le cheminement scolaire de leurs enfants.

Development of a Hydrated Electron Dosimeter for FLASH and Conventional Radiotherapy Applications

The aim of radiation therapy is to give a high radiation dose to the tumour while minimising the dose to healthy tissues. Radiation therapy has seen significant progress and innovations in recent years. Implementation of these newly developed treatment techniques in the clinic require high accuracy in dose delivery due to the relationships between absorbed dose, local tumor control and particularly normal tissue damage. Measurements of radiation dose is important to ensure accurate dose delivery to the patients. Several techniques are available to measure the radiation dose, in vivo or in vitro but they have limitations. In particular, the non-tissue equivalence of the detector housing/material and the sensitive volume leads to perturbations of the radiation fluence and necessitates correction factors. Another constraint placed on conventional dosimetric techniques is the limited resolution. In radiotherapy, in vivo dosimetry means measurement of the radiation dose received by the patient during treatment, as opposed to ex vivo or in vitro dose measurements made either before or after the treatment using a phantom to represent the patient. The aim of this project is to develop a novel, compact, sensitive, and fast detector based on radiolysis of water, which is decomposition of water molecules by TOBECONT’.

Identification de méthodologies innovantes au soutien et au développement de services sportifs municipaux

Dans le contexte socioéconomique actuel, notamment marqué par une plus grande décentralisation des services municipaux (Mosley, 2009) et par les exigences relatives à l’efficacité et à l’efficience des ressources allouées, la reddition de ces mêmes services est un enjeu d’importance, à la fois pour les instances étatiques (les bailleurs de fonds) et pour les citoyens (les bénéficiaires). Néanmoins, les études théoriques et empiriques laissent paraître, à l’heure actuelle, d’importantes lacunes relatives à l’articulation de ces services dans le contexte ci-haut évoqué, et plus précisément à l’égard des services de sport et de loisirs offerts à l’échelle municipale. À ce titre, le présent exercice voudra, à l’aide d’une série de sous-projets, identifier des méthodes innovantes relatives au soutien et au développement de services sportifs en contexte municipal.

Synthetic Souls: An AI-based framework for designing bots in multiplayer video games

Multiplayer video game refers to games in which more than a single person can play at the same time, either by collaboration or competition. The number of available multiplayer games is tremendous and is still growing. They can range from 2 players to few thousands (e.g., massively multiplayer online role-playing game). In order to ensure the best gaming experience, multiplayer video games rely on two assumptions that are up to the players: they must create a team of the required number of people for playing the game, (2) they must play until the end of the game. In practice, such conditions can be hard to satisfy, especially for games requiring a lot of players, or when the game duration is long. Besides, the connection loss of a player could also negatively affect the gaming experience for all the players, especially for real-time games. One solution is to use intelligent agents that mimic human behaviours. Such agents are referred to as bots. the goal of this project is to design an efficient, generic, and easy-to-use framework for designing bots in multiplayer video games. To do so, we plan to use state-of-the-art ML techniques.

Spécificité des champignons ectomycorhiziens de la forêt tempérée nordique : le cas d’un champignon comestible d’intérêt pour la mycosylviculture au Témiscouata

La cueillette de champignons ectomycorhiziens comestibles gagne beaucoup en popularité dans le Bas-St-Laurent. Il est nécessaire d’acquérir des données fiables sur les besoins des champignons, afin de développer un nouveau modèle de foresterie intégrant cette ressource. Ce projet vise à identifier les espèces végétales qui s’associent à l’appareil végétatif de certains champignons comestibles via des structures appelées manchons mycorhiziens. Des échantillons de sols seront prélevés à proximité de champignons dans les forêts de la MRC de Témiscouata. Les racines portant des manchons y seront recueillies. Puis, l’espèce végétale et l’espèce fongique y étant associées seront identifiées à l’aide de technologies de séquençage génétique. Cette étude fournira de précieuses données pour le développement de la mycosylviculture, puisqu’elle permettra de choisir les arbres à privilégier pour favoriser la croissance de champignons d’intérêt. Ces nouvelles connaissances sur les dynamiques écologiques de la forêt nous permettront également d’en améliorer la productivité.

Évaluations d’impact des projets de développement et des programmes sociaux dans les pays en développement dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19

Le but de ce projet est d’évaluer les impacts des programmes sociaux et des projets de développement à partir de données d’enquêtes collectées avant et pendant la pandémie de COVID-19. Un premier objectif sera de recenser les méthodes et les approches économétriques pour l’analyse des effets causaux. Sur la base de ce travail, les données mises à disposition des stagiaires seront analysées. Une attention particulière sera portée aux biais de sélection et d’attrition ainsi qu’à l’hétérogénéité inobservée à partir de méthodes des variables instrumentales. Des instruments pourront notamment être construits à partir des données géospatiales disponibles et des coordonnées GPS des communautés et ménages enquêtés. Un second objectif sera de proposer et de comparer diverses approches statistiques et économétriques afin d’évaluer les effets causaux, notamment l’hétérogénéité des effets. Des analyses de robustesse seront également effectuées.

Devant le problème grandissant des matières résiduelles issues de l’industrie de la construction et de la démolition au niveau mondial ; et face aux diverses possibilités d’utilisation des panneaux de placo – plâtre, tant en termes de possibilités industrielles qu’en termes de protection de l’environnement, un programme d’évaluation spécifique sur ces matériaux a été développé à l’Université du Québec à Montréal. Des solutions réalistes et raisonnables d’exploitation et d’utilisation seront fournies. Le Département des Sciences de la Terre et de l’Atmosphère de l’Université du Québec à Montréal cherchera à proposer des méthodes novatrices permettant la valorisation de ces matériaux dans le respect de l’environnement.

Application des CNN aux images satellites THR pour l’évaluation des impacts économiques et sociaux de la réhabilitation de corridors de transport en Irak

Ainsi, l’objectif principal de ce projet est de développer une méthode basée sur les techniques d’observation de la Terre (OT) afin d’évaluer les effets de la réhabilitation de corridors de transport en Irak sur le développement d’infrastructures économiques et sociales. L’approche sera basée sur l’application de l’apprentissage profond aux images satellites THR pour la détection des bâtiments résidentiels, commerciaux, industriels et d’autres géo-objets reliées aux activités économiques (ex. parcelles agricoles). Les géo-objets détectés sur les images satellites serviront à calculer des indicateurs de développement économique et social. Les connaissances générées par cette recherche fourniront des apprentissages pour d’autres pays fragiles et touchés par un conflit ainsi qu’aux pays à revenu intermédiaire de la tranche inférieure.

Application of Heritage Conservation and Temporary Protection Plans in the Planning Act Process.

This project involves researching and developing templates for heritage conservation plans and temporary protection plans to manage impacts to cultural heritage resources, such as historic buildings and landscapes. The objectives of this study are: 1) a Literature Review of best practices and background information; 2) Compare these with current Ontario legislative requirements;3) Develop analytical tables for Heritage Conservation Plans, and Temporary Protection Plans; 4) Apply these plans to two real world examples and 5) Collaborate in research on the histories of Canadian suburban planning. The partner firm will get access to university research facilities (libraries) and best-practice templates for future heritage planning projects.

Regional Risk Assessment of Underground Metro Infrastructure under Different Dynamic Loads

Underground metro infrastructures are subjected to different types of dynamic loads that would hinder their ability to function properly. This proposed research aims to assess the risks of city-scale underground tunnel networks under both periodic human-induced vibrations (i.e., blasting and drilling vibrations) and short-term extreme earthquake hazards. We will develop a GIS model for the tunnel soil/rock profiles in Montreal by synthesizing a comprehensive dataset for tunnel designs, embedment depths, and soil/rock properties from geotechnical surveys. Using the GIS data, we will develop high-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models to examine the dynamic behaviors of tunnels with interface conditions, namely segment joints where tunnel designs change and/or soil/rock profiles vary discontinuously. We will focus on examining to what degree the interface boundary would respond differently than other locations. Subsequently, we will expand the analyses to two-dimensional (2D) probabilistic FE analyses on the city-scale tunnel-soil/rock portfolios to evaluate the time-history responses of tunnels under varying levels of above-mentioned dynamic loads. The associated response demands will be convolved with stress limits and loading models to assess the regional risks of tunnel lines. Finally, we will incorporate the associated risk outputs into the GIS model to facilitate data visualization and risk interpretation.
