By expanding the scope to include the Atlantic Canadian provinces, the project will aim to decipher industry best practices in each region and to find ways for AFTeR to forge stronger connections. The project aims to better understand how the textile reuse industry can be developed into a circular economy, and to recommend ways in which this growth can be leveraged into meeting the goals of AFTeR members.

Development and Validation of a Needle Decompression Simulator to Support the Acquisition and Maintenance of Advanced Care Paramedics Skills

Paramedics perform a range of services in pre-hospital patient care, often being the first responders for the most critically ill patients. As such, it is crucial for them to learn and retain life-saving clinical procedures throughout their career. Simulation has been designed to provide a way to paramedic training. This project focuses on the development of a 3D printed simulator for training and re-training of the needle decompression procedure, a life saving yet rarely performed procedure. Once developed, we will test whether the 3D printed simulator leads to improved performance in paramedics relative to standard training. We anticipate that this project will result in a novel, effective and low-cost training solution for paramedics.

Characterization of insoluble minerals in the conventional potash mines of Saskatchewan: Implications for the origin and paragenesis of the Prairie Evaporite Formation

Potash, a group of potassium bearing minerals, is an essential crop nutrient. The use of potash-based fertilizers increases crop yields while making plants more resistant to extreme climate and disease. It is essential to meeting the food needs of the growing human population. Canada-based Nutrien Ltd. extracts potash from underground mines across Saskatchewan and is the largest producer in the world. The potash deposits Nutrien mines formed in a vast salty sea that stretched across western Canada 385 million years ago. Nowhere do analogous potash deposits form on the planet today. Understanding their origin requires detailed description of the potash rocks, which are found deep beneath the Canadian prairies. This project will conduct high-resolution sampling within Nutrien’s mines followed by high-precision analytical work to further characterize and understand their origin. The results will ensure Nutrien is able to continue efficiently mining Saskatchewan’s potash, which is among the highest quality on the planet.

GlenxRose – Linking the Clinic and Industry to Improve Patients’ Adherence to Therapeutic Interventions Using eXtended Reality

The present proposal is focused in extended reality technologies applied for the rehabilitation of brain injuries and voice-related disorders. The prevalence of these two conditions are high in the Canadian population. The adherence in the rehabilitation of these medical conditions are low. The University of Alberta (CogPro lab) in collaboration with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital has created an extended reality system called the ‘GlenxRose program’ for improving patient adherence to therapy for brain injuries and voice-related disorders. The general objective of this research design and implement clinical research in order to foster the adoption of a new rehabilitation technology, i.e. ‘GlenxRose program’ in the standard care services at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Apprentissage continu par modulation de paramètres d’incertitudes

L’intelligence artificielle et l’apprentissage profond font leur entrée dans notre vie. Que ce soit par le biais de moteurs de suggestion de film, d’assistant vocale ou d’aide à la conduite automobile, il est désormais pris pour acquis que cette technologie est là pour rester. Mais les modèles d’intelligence artificielle que nous connaissons aujourd’hui souffrent tous du même défaut. Ils peuvent être entraînés pour effectuer une tâche donnée, mais ils cessent d’apprendre dès que cet entraînement est terminé. Or, nous évoluons dans un environnement changeant et dynamique. Une voiture autonome entraînée pour reconnaître certains panneaux de signalisation ne saura pas quoi faire si un nouveau panneau fait soudainement partie du paysage. Le but de ce projet est de doter les modèles d’intelligence artificielle d’une composante permettant de moduler leur fonctionnement après leur période d’entraînement initiale. Les modèles ainsi modulés auraient donc une plus grande durée de vie et seraient plus performants.
