Understanding how amino acid handling influences protein synthesis: a new paradigm in back pain research

Back pain caused by intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a major health problem in both the UK and Canada, for which there is no successful treatment. With degeneration there is loss of IVD tissue which impairs function and causes pain. This project will initiate a collaboration to investigate an unstudied area of IVD biology: whether changes in how cells handle amino acids, the building blocks of protein, might cause or contribute to disease and whether ‘rescue’ of amino acid handling might be a potential treatment for IVD degeneration. This will be done initially in skeletal muscle where the mechanisms of amino acid handling are better understood. The project aims to determine how inhibiting transport of the essential amino acid leucine into cells affects protein production by muscle cells and whether high amounts of other amino acids can rescue any damaging effects of transporter inhibition. The findings will provide vital information on how leucine transport and protein production are controlled in muscle and allow the techniques and knowledge to be applied in IVD research.

Superhydrophilic Membrane Technology for High-Efficiency Produced Water Treatment

Brine water is often produced in mineral extracting processes. It can cause damage to soil and biota when being spilled during storage and transportation. The damage can last for decades. Even after a mineral extracting process is closed, the damage of soil structure and composition would still not be recovered. The long-lasting devastation may cause irreversible environmental impacts and huge economic losses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop low-footprint on-site remediation technologies.

market research assistant – Pegah Safataj

How has your company been affected by the COVID??19 pandemic? Describe how an internship student is important to your future success and business strategy.
Badinotti developed a Covid-19 Protocol early on for distribution to all employees. We have implemented many measures at our workplaces to combat Covid-19 and we have managed this global crisis well. However, it continues to be a challenge to manage logistically at times.
We would like to have the bulk of this research completed during the intership so that we can use it for our 2021 business strategy so having a dedicated research internship student who will be able to focus on this project alone would be a great help.

The objective of this study is to develop a district energy evaluation and plan for the Regional Municipality of Durham. This will be achieved by analyzing and assessing the current energy demand and response at the Region of Durham throughout all sectors, including commercial, institutional, industrial and residential sectors. There are numerous potential district energy nodes throughout the member municipalities within the region. Furthermore, the region houses two major nuclear power plants, which can be leveraged as potential energy sources for district energy. Various energy sources, systems and storage solutions can be integrated to achieve a reliable district energy system, including geothermal, solar, nuclear, cogeneration, multigeneration energy systems as well as thermal energy storage options. The study also seeks to review the benefits of District Energy Systems (DES) relative to conventional Business As Usual (BAU) design and offer energy node considerations of where and how DES may be effectively implemented. This study shall be viewed as Phase 1 of a multi-phase assignment.

Lives with Houseplants in Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic

This is a research project that will explore human’s relationships with houseplants in times of the COVID-19 pandemic and unpack the psychological, sociological, and environmental significance of these relationships. By digging deeply into our relationship with houseplants and creatively telling stories about them, the project seeks to uncover and deepen our connection with nature in times that we are deprived of it, build connections with living things in times that we can’t connect with other humans, and nurture intimacy in times that intimacy is scarce. The insights from this project will shed light on how we can better nurture our mental health and forge connection with our immediate lived environment when responding to societal wide stress and crisis.

Novel process of organic peroxides synthesis

In this work, we will develop new processes, including new raw materials, to produce known organic peroxides; such processes will include direct coupling to manufacture organic peroxides. We will demonstrate the synthesis processes by selecting the appropriate carboxylic acid(s), hydroperoxide starting material(s), catalysts, and operating conditions to produce the desired organic peroxides, particularly, t-butyl peroxybenzoate and also extending to other peresters, such as, t-butyl peroxypivalate and t-butyl perox-2-ethylhexanoate. After that, we will optimize the critical process parameters that affect reaction efficiency, purity, and product yield. We will also analyze the final product including identification and quantification of impurities, and residual reactants. LUPEROX series are often used as a radical initiator in polymerization reactions, the high economic value and the modern synthesis routes will benefit the domestic market.
