HI-DSR: Hyperspectral Images enhancement via Deep Sparse Representation model

The current non-destructive and fast method of hyperspectral imaging technology are used for different application from remote sensing to medical imaging and food processing. Due to the nature of acquired data which are massive as well as physical consideration depend on the type of application, the careful, fast and accurate data analysis is mandatory to accelerate the usage of HSI technology. To cope with the type of HSI data in which the sparsity assumption is applicable, this project aims to address the HSI data representation though the sparse problem under deep learning approach. Eventually, the research project will provide possible unique feature extraction spatially/spectrally to give more accurate/realistic results but provable in the sense of sparsity.

CDL-West Internship

The Creative Destruction Lab is a seed venture development program for massively scalable science and technology based ventures founded to positively impact the human condition. The CDL has instituted a unique summer program in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that accelerates ventures that address Covid-19 in terms of information-based solutions. CDL-West, based at UBC Sauder School of Business, supports CDL-Recovery in venture recruitment, venture management, pedagogy, virtual event management and in achievement of mentor-delegated objectives. Given that CDL-Recovery exists above and beyond regular CDL-West programming, the CDL-West interns are crucial to the programs execution. The CDL-West interns will support all elements of CDL-Recovery but will have special emphasis on virtual event management and providing consultative support for the benefit of the ventures’ achievement of mentor-delegated objectives. Projects may include market analysis, customer development, financial analysis, and other core activities related to building early stage start-ups as designated by program mentors and allocated by the CDL-Recovery team.

Outreach Coordinator

An intern would assist us in two main ways: helping us adapt to the current pandemic
by assisting with moving our programming online and adapting to the current scenario as well as helping use a fresh pair
of eyes to help us secure grant opportunities by communicating with entities and other organizations. The key responsibilities of the intern would be grant planning and research, grant proposal development and reporting,
community outreach and donor relations. They would be responsible for working with our staff to communicate with potential
donors, organizations, and government entities to secure new opportunities that would benefit the organization.

Business Development Intern

CrashMeal Services Inc. is a mobile application based food-delivery platform in Vancouver. The company provides “meal plan” subscriptions from restaurants through the application. The role of a Business Development Intern will involve interacting with early users of the service and actively advertise the service through social media to create awareness of the service as the organization prepares for launch. Once the launch is underway, the intern will be required to actively pursue feedback from the users for delivery locations, waiting times and quality of service, which will shape future strategies of acquiring new users.

Improving the Accuracy of Satellite-to-Irradiance Models

With improvements in photovoltaic performance and price drops, solar energy will soon
become cheaper than many traditional sources. Irradiance-the amount of solar energy
reaching the Earth-is key In feasibility studies of solar energy systems. Over 20 years of
archival satellite imagery enable us to generate long-term data series to better understand
climatic averages of irradiance. Turquoise’s satellite-to-irradiance model must be optimized to
increase its accuracy and performance. Two categories of parameters must be optimized.
Physical model parameters-atmospheric turbidity and albedo, direct and diffuse components
of radiation-must be estimated for the model to match observations. Parameters of the
software-the optimal range of images for cloud index calculations and parallel proceSSing
parameters-must be tuned to improve efficiency.
Increased accuracy will enable Canadian investors and governments to make better
decisions, increase stakeholder trust in the satellite-based method as complementary to
ground measurements, increase the export potential of Turquoise and help accelerate the
adoption of solar energy in Canada.

Project Coordinator

The Digital Lab is an integrated unit of both BC Children’s Hospital and the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics. In alignment with the vision of both organizations, we produce and manage a portfolio of digital innovation projects that aim to improve pediatric health and healthcare services; including research, education, health advocacy, and the delivery of clinical services.

To accommodate disruptions to our business environment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have identified key areas to which an internship would be of key strategic value. The primary area the intern will be focusing on will be project management for digital innovation initiatives as well as strategy and operations management support within our internal operations and planning portfolio. Key activities to be taken to help restore and modify business operations will include but not limited to:

* Supporting core activities across the project life-cycle, from conceptualization to implementation and monitoring
* Implementing and monitoring operational processes related to project and portfolio management
* Identifying potential issues to project scope, timeline, and budget; analyzing, synthesizing and communicating data
* Conducting quality assurance on digital products as required to ensure value and accountability
