WWiKY BioSciences Inc. – Business Development Intern

At this point we are in need of an update to our business plan in order to expand our options to find financial support within the current economic climate.
We need to expand our list of government support options, explore multiple markets to widen our net of potential investors, to explore multiple international markets, explore additional potential partnership options.
We also need to explore and potentially modify the commercialization plan for our current research product as there is potential for use of hypoxia-detection in tissues potentially damaged by COVID infection. Like all start-ups we face the challenge of needing to find funding to being on staff and yet need personnel to do the work to make the money…. Growing Canadian start-ups require these types of bridging and growth support opportunities.

Microstructure Evolution and Thermomechanical Fatigue of Service-Exposed Coke Drum Materials

There is a growing demand when it comes to the repairing of the coke drum since most of the current in-use coke drums has been in service for decades. This study will develop a new methodology to assess the microstructure evolution and thermal mechanical properties of service-exposed coke drums. The focus of experiments of this project involves high temperature fatigue test to evaluate the fatigue life of the material. Through the studying, the evolution of microstructure evolution will be better identified and understood, providing the foundation of the analysis in the future. Finally, an optimized heat treatment procedure to help in repairing of the coke drum is to be developed, which will greatly benefit Suncor in the quality of repairing and reduce the cost.

Effects of Geomagnetic Disturbances on Power Transformers

Explosive eruptions on the sun’s surface eject charged particles that may travel the earth path. They cause disturbances in earth’s magnetic field and as a result, a low frequency current is induced in electrical power system transmission lines. The induced current increases operating temperature of power transformers. This overheating reduces lifetime of the transformer and may even lead to a catastrophic failure of the transformer. In this project, the overheating is evaluated by measuring amount of byproducts generated in oil insulation of the transformer including dissolved gases and bubbles. These byproducts are indicators of insulation deterioration. The measurements are performed under various conditions, and novel contactless measuring techniques are developed in this regard. Results of this project provide power system operators with critical limits on operating temperature of power transformers to increase their lifespan and prevent catastrophic failures during a geomagnetic disturbance.

Nonlinear Projection Methods for Prediction of Trends in Cancer Incidence and Mortality

Main aim of this project is to develop a prediction model for cancer projection, with detailed information regarding incidence, mortality and other measures of cancer burden for the most common types of cancer, presented by age, sex, time and geographic locations. These data can help stimulatenew research as well as assist decision-making and priority-setting at the individual, community, provincial/territorial and national levels. This prediction Model can be implemented by using historical data to model trends of cancer risk, and extrapolating the trends into the future to project the rates and numbers. Monitoring cancer incidence and mortality time trends is essential for cancer research and health-care planning.

Project proposal Key Assets Nl

Key Assets has been in operation in the province since 2009 and is affiliated with an international network operated by the Martin James Foundation which provides services to children, youth and families. In this province they offer an array of services from individual and family therapy to residential support for children in care. Currently, with a staff of over 300 they provide services to over 200 young people. The Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (CAYAC) is supported by Key Assets but stands as an independent registered charity with a goal of advocacy of services, public policy, research and professional learning for vulnerable youth. The board is moving toward an interdisciplinary research project that will inform the broader community of the evolving needs of these children and families. This internship will help develop a plan to both design a research model as well as engage various community partners and link them with university faculties and researchers to establish a research cluster.

Conatix Finance and Marketing Internship

Due to the nature of the start-up technology organization, Conatix works in agile sprints. Project responsibilities will be diverse and change almost daily between improving, iterating, and implementing various deliverables. Some projects that the Conatix team have outlined for my term with the team are:

o Creating a fundraising plan and implementing the respective campaign. This project will require development of investor deck presentations that provides a full corporate outline on financial projections, market size and capture capabilities.
o Continuous maintenance and improvement of the contact (CRM) database. This project will be ongoing and require diligence in client contact and information vetting.
o The team would also like to see a brief final report summarizing what has been completed over the period of employment to prevent loss and ensure continuation of any implemented activities.

This project will allow me to help Conatix cover as much ground for general data analysis and business development as possible. With a team that is already stretched for ensuing deadlines and on a limited budget the ability for me to apply my skill set to the partner organization’s activities will lessen the burden of the pandemic and its affect on start-up fund raising capabilities.

Business Strategy Internship- Impact Kitchen

Impact Kitchen has four locations in Toronto, built on the belief that food has the power to shape our daily lives. Their mission is to empower the community to eat healthy, nutritionally-dense foods with a focus on quality and sustainability. I will be given the opportunity to work in both their strategic partnership department, as well as conduct some research as to how Covid 19 has affected their business, and what can be expected in the reopening phase of restaurants. One of my roles will be to research their most popular products, determine how often they are purchased and at what locations. One of the other roles will be looking to create more strategic partnerships within Toronto as well as maintaining existing partnerships. This project will allow Impact Kitchen to gain another member on their team without the financial burden of having to hire a full-time member during these difficult times. It will help them to navigate this stressful time with a new fresh minded individual who can bring ideas to the table. With the opening of locations, and the team being extremely busy ensuring all customers are feeling safe and health TOBECONT’.

Empire Company (Sobeys) Strategy Internship

Empire Company is headquartered in Nova Scotia. They average $26.6B in annual sales, and break up their business operations into two categories: 1) Food Retailing (Sobeys, Farm Boy, FreshCo, Thrify Foods) & Related Businesses (Lawtons Pharmacy, Fuel & Convenience (Sobeys Express), Wholesale, and Liquor) and 2) Investments/Operations. The purpose of this project is to re-imagine the delivery of Empire’s services through COVID-19. This project will specifically focus on the Fuel & Convenience (F&C) related business. How do we re-imagine the F&C business in the midst of a pandemic, to become the number one F&C provider throughout the nation? Convenience stores are notoriously known for their over-priced, unhealthy, and unappealing appearance. How can we flip this orthodox, and create a convenience store never seen before in Canada? Through this project, I will create a strategic plan for the growth and value-creation for the F&C business. This includes a size-up, strategy, and execution development phase as outlined in detail in the proposal. This also includes creating a plan of action (with risks/challenges/mitigation/timeline) to put this strategy into action in the fall. With 350 current locations, we aim to grow the F&C business to every province.

Co-op Marketing and Communications Assistant

The COVID-19 crisis is compounding many of the mental health challenges the vulnerable youth in our program already face. We, and our school district partners, have seen an increase in anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, addictions, and trauma. A number of families have lost income and are experiencing food insecurity, heightened anxiety, and hopelessness. In response, Take a Hike pivoted: We moved all programming online and proactively engaged youth.
As a result, we have a new online offering. An intern would add valuable skills, time, and energy to our team and assist us in moving forward with planned marketing and communications projects.

Below is a (shortened) list of activities the intern could be involved with and develop. We would be happy to tailor the scope of the internship to meet the ability of the intern.
– Google Analytics data collection and reporting
– Search engine keyword research to optimise new content on website and reach our key audiences with information regarding mental health services available across BC
– Target audience research and benchmark research – i.e. compiling data around best times to post on each platform for our various stakeholders
– Updating website content for SEO. We use Squarespace and it is quite straightforward to TOBECONTINUED
