Looking Glass Foundation – Sustainable Fundraising Strategy

Looking Glass Foundation is an organization in BC that supports individuals struggling with eating disorders. They provide innovative programs and services that instill hope, decrease isolation and sustain recovery. As a not-for-profit organization, Looking Glass Foundation relies heavily on fundraising efforts to sustain the programs and serices they offer. One of their most significant fundraiser is an annual gala which they host each Spring. This year, due to COVID-19, they had to cancel this event. This seriously impacted the financial resources they greatly depend on. Given the uncertainties of COVID-19 and the disruptions it has caused, it is evident that in order to continue the work they do, Looking Glass Foundation will have to reassess their fundraising strategy and replace it with one that will continue to sustain them in the future. This project is about creating this critically needed Sustainable Fundraising Strategy for Looking Glass Foundation.

Green Sustainable Telco Cloud

Bringing cloud computing from the Internet domain to Next Generation Networks (NGN) in order to
provide Telco cloud services will leverage the use of NGN, reduce costs and create many value-added
services. It is therefore becoming critical for world-class carriers, like Bell and Telus, to adopt a cloudbased
communications model. However, unlike public Internet clouds, a Telco cloud has specific
requirements, such as performance, scalability, security and isolation. The CANARIE GreenStar
Network (GSN), led by Mohamed Cheriet, recently became the first network in the world to be
powered entirely by renewable energy. The proposed project will evolve the GSN platform and will
address challenges in building interoperable elastic cloud services that are green and sustainable, by
designing open and scalable clouds with environmental control features that optimize workload,
energy consumption and GHG emissions. Unlike most of the server-centric public Internet cloud
solutions, the proposed model will be network-centric and target the telecommunications industry. The…tobecont’d….

Fortune Label Inc. – Digital Marketing and Transformation

The overarching goal of this project will be to strengthen organic, and possibly paid, traffic to build company credibility and generate leads for the sales pipeline by developing an online presence within the B2B manufacturing market prior to a Merger and Acquisition. The project will include website development, Search Engine Optimization, User Experience maximization, as well as content creation and Social Media Marketing campaigns integrated with sales channels. The specific contributions that the project will provide is setting up the company with the tools and resources to maximize sales and profits by the time the acquisition process begins. Since Fortune Label does not currently have any online presence, that adds a layer of difficulty to an M&A because the brand is unknown and not fully credible to the market, and there’s also little ability to consistently generate leads. Thus, Fortune Label’s potential to generate revenue will be undervalued in the event of an M&A. Through the project, however, we will be able to provide a family-owned business with the ability to maximize its market value, thus providing a robust platform to negotiate the best possible price for the company.

Accurate Image Geo-Localization using Smartphones

To improve traveller services in train stations, SNCF and Keolis Canada seek to develop a mobile application for real-time geo-localisation based on still images captured by the user on its smartphone. This would allow guidance through the station and provide key information. This project will develop a Deep Learning (DL) model for accurate and real-time image-based geo-localisation, relying on novel computer vision and trained by image datasets previously collected and anonymized by SNCF. The DL model will allow for context-aware recognition, and for progressive pruning and knowledge distillation of deep networks. A mobile application compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, providing 2D classical visualisation, will also be developed with the constraints of limited processing resources (memory complexity and energy consumption). This cross-disciplinary project will train highly qualified personnel to face challenges in areas of strategic interest. It will intensify the exchange of ideas around new DL models in visual recognition applications, using large and unlabeled datasets. Findings will be disseminated in high caliber scientific journals and exploited in SNCF and Keolis applications.

Research on Data and Operation Transformation Techniques

Considering the fact that software is deployed on open devices (such as PCs, tablets, smartphone, etc.), White-Box Cryptography (WBC) that protects security software is becoming an essential technology. In the software security industry, there is an ongoing research on new methods to perform WBC and, more specifically, to design data transformation algorithms that are robust against tampering and attacks in the open software context. This internship will familiarize Irdeto, a software security company, with the new topics and advancements in digital communication and information theory concerning data transformations. This internship also aims to develop new methods and techniques utilizing new literature, as well as integrating the new ideas with the current methods available at Irdeto. Prototyping, documentation and contribution to the literature are essential parts of this internship as well.

Automatic Question-Answer Generation from Educational Texts

As online educational platforms and blogs such as Coursera, Edublog, Korbit Technologies Inc. etc. are becoming increasingly popular, a great way for students to learn is to solve QA problems on educational texts. Students also learn by getting answers to their questions. Since manual QA generation of huge content of educational texts seems impracticable, an important research goal is to create natural question-answer generation systems from reading comprehension materials. Neural sequential models (e.g. LSTMs, Transformers etc.) are able to generate natural questions by paying attention to important part of texts and have improved state-of-the-art on many QA datasets, and also helped develop new datasets. In this research project, we will investigate how we can leverage current state-of-the-art NLP neural models for question-answering generation. We are equally interested in identifying lesser worked areas such as conversational QA (which helps develop intelligent agents that can drive QA style conversations and test user understanding of passage), exploiting active learning by querying the student for questions in-case of insufficient labelled data), crowdsourcing educational blogs for use in building QA models.

Terahertz Surface Plasmon Near-Field Sensor for Material SensingApplications

In this project, we plan to address the specific problem that TeTechS Inc is facing at this stage of
its product development project, which is collecting a complete set of measurement data for an
array of organic materials with different levels of purity and demonstrate the capability of its
proprietary terahertz sensing techniques to qualify and quantify purity and integrity of organic LED
(OLED) materials with the level of precision required in OLED deposition and material purification
processes. Materials used in organic electronics pose a significant opportunity for terahertz
measurement applications. TeTechS have performed research on a subset of materials used in
organic electronics can demonstrate the effectiveness of its measurement system in detection
and quantification of the materials signatures. We believe that TeTechS’ technology can serve in
many stages of organic electronics production and enhance the quality of end products in the
organic electronic industry. There is currently no terahertz system on the market to address this
problem in the…TOBECONT’D…
