Developing a Smart Tool for Enhanced Oil Recovery Screening Based on Artificial Intelligence

Oil production constitutes a significant portion of the world’s demand for sources of energy and raw materials for production of numerous daily-needed items. However, most of the currently producing oilfields are in their production decline phases with much of their oil left unproduced due to technical barriers. Sustained production of these underground resources depends on methods such as Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), which involves injection of specific material or energy in oil reservoirs to enhance oil displacement towards producing wells. The first step in making EOR implementation decisions is screening the available EOR technologies and methods. Despite several screening methods proposed over the past five decades, there is no advanced screening method suitable for universal use. The aim of this project is developing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based EOR screening tools to identify the critical screening parameters as well as to assess and rank the EOR options for any oil reservoir.

Caring for the caregiver: Exploring the “lived” caregiving and self-care experiences of family caregivers of persons with scleroderma during COVID-19

Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune connective tissue disease that damages skin and internal organs. Although many Canadians with scleroderma live at home with supported care from family, seeing their loved ones struggle with reduced participation in activities of daily living caused by disease symptoms often causes caregivers emotional distress in their caregiving role. Given the need for physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, family caregivers are experiencing increased social isolation (to prevent contracting and spreading COVID-19) and emotional distress with fewer community care resources available. To direct the development of socially inclusive caregiving, self-care, and social support resources for family caregivers of persons with scleroderma, this research will provide an in-depth understanding of family caregivers “lived” experiences with caregiving and self-care during COVID-19. It will also provide evidence of how co-participation in an online scleroderma support group program influences caregiver burden, loneliness, social connection, social support, and self-care behaviour.

Radiant Energy Spectrum Converter for Enhanced Thermophotovoltaic Systems

Thermo-photovoltaic (TPV) systems are optical heat engines that convert radiant heat to electricity using a photovoltaic cell. TPV is a highly promising technology that can potentially be used to generate electric power from any high-temperature heat source including concentrated solar radiation, industrial waste heat, heat from radioisotope decay, and fuel combustion systems. However, the performance of TPV systems needs to be improved to achieve widespread commercialization. The objective of this project is to develop a novel class of optical cavities to significantly enhance the efficiency of TPVs. The proposed structure will provide for substantial improvements in TPV technology with a wide variety of applications such as solar thermal cogeneration processes, waste heat recuperation systems, auxiliary power conversion devices, fuel-to-electric-power conversion, self-powered devices, and remote power supplies for off-grid applications. These advances bode well for providing alternative energy sources and conversion methods in support of a global transition to cleaner energy.

Energy Efficient Integrated Design of FlightManagement Systems and Autopilots

The amount of emissions to the atmosphere is currently an important environmental concern as
policy makers and Heads of State are starting to demonstrate a strong interest in energy efficient
transportation, in particular energy efficient aircraft. However, current autopilot technology will
often not take into account the energy used to perform a given maneuver which can lead to
potentially larger fuel consumption and larger atmospheric emissions than what is strictly
necessary. The task of energy optimization is typically left to a flight management system (FMS).
However, the next generation aircraft will require additional functionality in fuel efficiency that can
benefit from a tighter and better interaction of the FMS and the autopilot subsystems. For such a
scenario, this research proposes to perform an integrated design of the FMS-autopilot ensemble
to be more energy efficient. A first collaborative effort of the applicants, has involved the study of
energy efficient autopilot design methods for fixed set points. We now propose to study…TOBECONT’D…

Dress for Success Saskatoon Internship

The intern will research possible ways to explore and strengthen relationships between the organization and its clients, donors, and volunteers. They will implement a digital system to centralize client documents. With the new information system, the intern will improve client relations by improving tracking and retention of client information. Through this tracking, the intern will research new ways to create a program that will foster a network of support for clients to better fit their needs and be a continual support.

Mayana Geneviere

Mayana Geneviere (MG) hopes to grow and scale within today’s current commercial climate. To respond to disruption, MG has needed to pivot its business plan and strategy, which must be optimized through the project undertaken by the intern. This work involves researching potential markets for product launches, auditing processes for working remotely, and exploring new ways to navigate disruption. To do so, the intern will be responsible for gathering data, analyzing results, and reviewing processes to ultimately develop an in-depth strategic plan alongside a implementation plan. The expected benefit to MG is to provide clarity and minimize uncertainty in order to make the most informed business decisions moving forward.

Prospecting/Demand Generation Internship

Fortune Label is a family-run industrial label and packaging company that has operated in the Greater Toronto Area since 1995. The company is at a crossroads as it is trying to decide between two options (sell or scale). The Intern will be responsible for identifying potential customers and establishing first contact with those companies through a multitude of prospecting methods. The main objective of this project is to be able to acquire one new sizeable customer by the end of the internship before taking the final decision (sell or scale).
