Styrenic Polymers Debromination and Recycling

The current feedstock of en-life high impact polystyrene (HIPS) is currently impossible to be valorized and recycled due the presence of brominated fire retardants (FRs).
The presence of those FR´s is consequence of the need from the electronic industry to compile with the security regulations. However, now those brominated compounds are to be banned due its harmful and hazardousness nature in humans and environment. Thus, a debromination process is required in order to allow HIPS recycling and valorization.

Caractérisation de pastilles supraconductrices dans un champ magnétique rotatif

Le projet de recherche entrepris dans ce stage vise à établir une méthodologie pour caractériser des pastilles supraconductrices en fonction de l’angle d’un champ magnétique appliqué. Avec l’aide du magnétomètre géant du groupe de Philippe Vanderbemden, l’aimantation d’une pastille supraconductrice plongée dans un champ peut être déterminée pour obtenir sa densité de courant critique, une propriété intrinsèque à la structure du matériau. Cette densité de courant critique dicte les propriétés de magnétisation de la pastille et est donc une information cruciale lorsque l’on veut utiliser des supraconducteurs pour des applications. Lors du stage, des mesures du champ magnétique près de la pastille supraconductrice avec le magnétomètre géant seront produites en fonction de l’angle et de l’amplitude du champ appliqué pour l’aimantation afin de caractériser la densité de courant critique de façon générale. Des simulations par la méthode des éléments finis seront produites afin de valider les mesures. Cette caractérisation en profondeur me permettra d’avancer mon projet sur le guidage de nanoparticules magnétiques. La rotation des pastilles supraconductrices est importante pour créer des gradients assez puissants pour guider des particules magnétiques thérapeutiques pour traiter les cancers plus efficacement.

Cooperative Control of Multi-Manipulator Systems

This project aims at investigating the effect of communication constraints on cooperative manipulators. Afterward, the communication constraints will be detailed modeled, based on that the control strategy specifically for the multi-robot system will be developed. The stability of the system under the designed control strategy should be guaranteed, and the performance regarding the execution of the predefined cooperative task should also be assured. Its effectiveness should be verified in both simulations and experiments with the Franka Emika Panda arm. Overall, this work should include theoretical development and experiment evaluations. The final outcome will be presented either in the form of a detailed report or a published paper.

Sectorisation géographique multivariable en pré-optimisation du Problème du Voyageur de Commerce avec fenêtres de temps

Le projet consiste à développer des algorithmes permettant de créer des secteurs pour les clients de Fastercom. Afin d’y parvenir, différentes méthodes de Machine Learning seront évaluées et implémentées. Cette création de secteurs permettra d’améliorer la performance des algorithmes de la compagnie en découpant le gros problème d’optimisation de tournées de véhicules en petits problèmes plus simples. Ensuite ils seront traités l’un après l’autre, au lieu de s’attaquer au gros problème directement. Le gain sur le temps et sur la qualité des solutions obtenues améliorera la satisfaction des clients et réduira leur empreinte écologique en diminuant les trajets non-nécessaires effectués par leurs camions.

Optimal Orientation of Projection Components for an Augmented Reality System

The requirements of this project would be to determine the optimal orientation of the display screens and visor with respect to the user’s eyes. In order to do this, the person undertaking this project will be required to gain an understanding of existing augmented reality systems, how they work, and how their application can be extrapolated to this heads-up display for firefighters. This project will challenge the user to research and determine the optimal method of performing the augmented reality task, and then determine how the screen-visor orientation should be designed.

This paper will explore the industry sectors that attract and retain the largest number of very recent Chinese immigrants (5 years or less) to Canada and the credential recognition services that Chinese skilled workers need in order to be able to work to their full potential in Canada. This paper will also include a review of the Canadian policies and services towards attracting foreign skilled workers. The findings of this research will help Canadian employers in their business growth and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada scholars, migration think tanks, policy makers, and migrant workers advocacy groups to develop suggestions for changes to existing public policies and programs.

Experimental investigation of allowable engineering properties of regular and composite glulam columns

Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation (SMTC) is a renowned Canadian company for its quality mass timber products and ability to fabricate complex design. The company developed a new type of composite glulam as a structural element. Extensive experimental investigation in collaboration with Dr. Alam and Mr. Peng at UBCO revealed the future potential of this composite glulam column. The proposed research will extend the previous study by evaluating the engineering properties of each individual layer through experimental testing. Both the regular and composite glulam elements will be tested to understand and investigate the difference in behavior. This research will come up with the design values which can be used by the practicing engineers to design composite glulam column. The results of this study will have a significant effect on the development and application of this proprietary composite glulam element.

The effect of an affective music recommendation system and auditory beat stimulation on anxiety in the student population

Chronic anxiety is a growing psychological disorder worldwide and in Canada. Even when anxiety presents at pre-clinical levels, it can be disabling. Anti-anxiety drugs have many adverse side-effects. In some cases, listening to music decreases anxiety more effectively than anti-anxiety drugs. Binaural beats may also reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. This project will examine the potential additive effects of combining the anxiety reducing properties of calm inducing music and binaural beats. In this project, we propose to evaluate the anxiety reducing and calming potential of music and binaural beats through electroencephalographic (EEG) band power measures, galvanic skin response (GSR), Heart Rate Variability (HRV), anxiety measures, and emotional state measures (valence, arousal). We predict that the combination of music and binaural beats will cause a greater reduction in anxiety and increase in calmness than either of these conditions. More broadly, the proposed work is intended to provide a proof of concept for the effectiveness of a sound-based treatment of anxiety that is free of harmful side-effects.

Identification des préalables à l’implantation de l’Industrie 4.0 dans les PME manufacturières du Québec

Dans le contexte industriel d’aujourd’hui, il y a un écart entre la productivité des grandes entreprises et les entreprises internationales contrairement aux PME manufacturières du Québec. Cet écart peut s’expliquer par l’amélioration de l’agilité de production des grandes entreprises grâce à l’utilisation de nouveaux outils technologiques leur permettant de répondre aux exigences de production de la personnalisation de masse. De l’autre côté, les PME manufacturières du Québec ne suivre pas la tendance technologique de leurs compétiteurs. Ce retard de productivité peut s’expliquer par le manque d’agilité des PME manufacturières du Québec. Il est possible d’associer ce manque par la faible utilisation de technologies innovantes dans les procédés de production. Ainsi pour préparer les PME manufacturières du Québec à ce changement, il est important de mettre en place les préalables nécessaires en vue de l’implantation du 4.0. Les préalables permettront d’améliorer et d’optimiser la gestion actuelle de leur production et ainsi atteindre l’agilité nécessaire pour l’implantation du 4.0. L’arrivée du virage 4.0 dans les PME leur permettra donc de rester compétitifs face à leurs compétiteurs étrangers.

Filament quality control system for FFF 3D printing

Additive manufacturing, also referred to as 3D printing, gains increasing popularity in many industrial sectors. Fused filament fabrication is one 3D printing technology that is suitable for a variety of different applications in the field of aerospace, transportation and automotive. One major challenge in implementing this technology at an industrial scale is to guarantee consistent quality of the 3D printed product. Many printed parts have defects or fail during printing due to inconsistent material quality. The objective of this project is to develop a system to monitor the incoming material in real time to assure the 3D printed part quality remains constant for every printed part. Developing such a system will advance the maturity of the 3D printing process and forms the first step to aid the industrial partner in the integration of 3D printing into its current manufacturing portfolio.

An optical function analysis for thin-film device structures

Informed thin-film device design, wherein layers of thin-films are deposited onto an underlying substrate, requires an understanding of the spectral dependence of the optical functions associated with the thin-film layers which constitute such a device. In this project, we aim to further understand the form of the optical functions for the various types of thin-film materials and then use this knowledge in order to aid in the interpretation of experimentally acquired transmittance and reflectance spectra. We will start with the assembly of a library of optical functions corresponding to the various types of thin-film materials. A series of models that aims to capture this physicality will then be devised. Finally, we will use these models in order to narrow the parameter space that must be probed in determining the spectral dependence of the optical functions associated with the thin-film layers from measurements of the transmittance spectrum at normal incidence and the reflectance spectrum at near-normal incidence. The company sponsoring this project aims to commercialize a software offering capturing the results of this project. They also aim to exploit the results in order to develop new solar-based products.
