Factors influencing overwintering survival in the tick Ixodes scapularis, including the effect of infection with Borrelia spp.

The plan is to research the physiology and behaviour of Ixodes scapularis, and Dermacentor variabilis ticks with and without the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium, Rickettsia bacterium, Francisella bacterium, and Bartonella bacterium to answer the overarching question: Are tick-borne bacteria that are pathogenic to humans also harmful to the tick vectors in Nova Scotia? Cold hardiness and fat content, and temperature preference will be used as measures of physiology and behaviour respectively. This work will lead to the development and dissemination of health promotional material to the local community.

Development of the Tat-GluN2BCTM peptide as a novel therapy for acute myocardial infarction

Acute myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack) is a major disease of the cardiovascular system and a leading cause of death and hospitalization in North America. It results in 7.4 million deaths globally per annum. Current clinical medications only prevent the disease but cannot cure it after a heart attack occurs. Scientific evidence suggests that DAPK1 is a vital protein that can cause heart damage during a heart attack, and I have created a compound that is able to reduce the level of DAPK1 in the heart so as to prevent heart damage. In this project, I propose to test the efficacy of this compound in various models of heart attack, which may lead to a novel therapy for this devastating disease. This proposed project will not only give me a comprehensive training in scientific research, but also help the partner organization, a Canadian biotechnology company, rapidly grow its product pipeline.

Novel formulation for the treatment of interstitial cystitis

Interstitial cystitis is an inflammatory disease of the urinary bladder and is recognized as a serious medical condition associated with a profoundly negative impact on patients’ quality of life. Currently, there are no widely acknowledged causes of this disorder and no effective treatments available. Panag is a Halifax based drug company which focuses on development of novel therapeutic treatments which can be used to alleviate both pain and inflammation associated with IC. The goal of our research is to provide IC patients with symptom and pain relief, as well as to improve outcome. Previous research showed that the immune system is regulated by another system within our body, called the endocannabinoid system. Our approach uses special drugs, called cannabinoids, which are designed to target this system and as a result, provide symptom and pain relief and improve patients’ quality of life. TO BE CONT’D

Anticorrosion and conductive smart thin-film coating built by additive manufacturing

Corrosion is a phenomenon that can be only mitigated, not stop. Usually, paint is applied to the surface that needs to be protected from the environment. Sooner or later, it peals off or wear, leaving the surface unprotected. Besides protection from corrosion, the paint or coating rarely has other properties like being electrically conductive.
Another emerging industrial sector could greatly help to create complex coating. This sector is known as 3D printing or “Additive Manufacturing” (AM) and it is currently used for fast prototyping. Recently, these printers were modified to print metal, concrete, food and even organic fabrics. That technology could coat any existing surface. It could also include several materials to add more properties. The present research project for these Mitacs interships will aim to improve actual AM technology for the specific application of manufacturing thin-film anticorrosion and conductive coating. The fixating effect of LCA during ideation in eco-design: a case study

Although life cycle assessment (LCA) is a robust eco-design tool, its capacity to inspire creative ideas among designers is unclear. LCA is often used as a portrait of a product’s environmental hotspots, which are then addressed as design compromises. This highly technical design method usually leads to incremental improvements of products, and appears to do little to foster radical innovation. In contrast to this method, innovative design purposely stimulates creativity by challenging the cognitive fixations that keep designers in the realm of dominant design, in order to develop disruptive concepts that may be far removed from the functional unit as defined in an LCA. It is argued that innovation and radical change, rather than incremental change, are needed to accelerate the transition to sustainability. Yet it has never been shown, in a highly technical engineering context, that more creative solutions are necessarily more sustainable than solutions inspired directly by an LCA. Furthermore, it has not been shown that ideation using LCA necessarily leads to less creative results than ideation using spotlight concepts, or guiding scenarios, to eliminate fixations during ideation, as is recommended by innovative design theory […]

Developing statistical methods to discover genetic variants underlying longitudinal decline in lung function

COPD is a common inflammatory lung condition that is characterized by airflow limitation and symptoms of cough and shortness of breath. Globally, it affects 384 million people and is responsible for ~4-7% of all deaths. Longitudinal genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are needed to unravel the molecular determinants of dynamic quantitative traits underlying COPD, such as decline in lung function over time.
Analysis of longitudinal GWAS to find biomarker of lung function decline was unsuccessful in the past. None of the discovered biomarkers were replicable. A novel statistical methods is needed to address challenges faced by current methods, to more powerfully and precisely discover biomarkers from longitudinal GWAS.
We will develop a novel statistical method based on Bayesian hierarchical model improve biomarker discovery from longitudinal GWAS. This novel method will be applied to unique data owned by our collaboration team, and try to find novel biomarkers for dynamic traits underlying COPD.

Highly selective hydrogenation Rh-MxOy catalysts using Rh@M core-shell nanoparticle precursors

Catalytic selective hydrogenation is a method that can be used in reaction chemistry to selectively increase the amount of desired product that is formed after a reaction. This ultimately increases the efficiency of a reaction and decreases operation costs, providing significant theoretical and industrial value. However, within catalytic selective hydrogenation, research regarding oxides-modified noble metal catalysts, the relation between structure of metal-oxides and their performance, and the key factor controlling the catalytic stability are unclear. These metal-oxides can be essential to the process, thus, the topic requires further studies. This research project aims to develop a technical procedure to modify the structure of some metal-oxides while examining their catalytic stability and selectivity. When we have a clear understanding of the structure of metal-oxides interfaces, highly selective hydrogenation catalysts can be designed. The methodology used to develop highly selective catalysts in this project can be extended to other materials and applications.

The study on the surface modification of LTA zeolite membrane

In the field of organic solvent dehydration, pervaporation technology has a certain advantage over the conventionally-used distillation and absorption. Pervaporation technology not only reduces cost but also improves separation efficiency. Zeolite membrane, specifically the LTA-type, offers a promising alternative to the current use of polymer membranes within the field of organic solvent dehydration due to its ability to allow only water to pass through it. The objective of this research project is to change the surface of LTA zeolite membrane using various organic molecules, including dopamine, polydimethylsiloxane and lignin. In this project, the LTA seed is firstly hydrothermally synthesized, and then is ball-milled to increase the seed activity. The organic molecules are then used to modify the membrane layer or hollow fiber substrate, which should increase the membrane’s selectivity without affecting its permeance. TO BE CONT’D

Detection, characterization and analysis of unsafe video content on YouTube

A safe video platform can provide a healthy and suitable environment for users in general and children in particular. This project aims to utilize machine learning and deep learning techniques to identify and flag sensitive and questionable content (e.g., content related to violence, sexuality, etc.). The algorithm will leverage video frames extracted from the database for training and building a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. This model can detect and classify videos just like a human being. With this technology, BBTV can provide a more appropriate channel management solution to content creators that leverage its services.

Defect Functionalized Sustainable Energy Materials: From Design to Devices Application

Oxide materials have many interesting properties, in particular in the field of sustainability sciences. The Hosono group at the Tokyo Institute of Technology is world leading in synthesizing novel oxide materials with very interesting electronic properties with potential applications in the fields of superconductivity, catalysis and optically transparent electrodes for photovoltaics or displays. I will gain insights and experience in synthesizing these materials in Japan. To characterize the homogeneity of the materials I will use scanning probe techniques developed in the Grutter lab at McGill University. Defects play an important role in these materials – the outcome of this project is to measure the spatial homogeneity of the properties of oxide based materials and thus develop a deeper understanding of the role of defects in determining the material properties.

TO BE CONT’D
