Westland Insurance

Westland Insurance is a rapidly growing insurance provider dedicated to making insurance more accessible and engaging for clients and communities. As the organization expands, the need for a structured and effective Learning & Development (L&D) strategy becomes critical. One major challenge is ensuring that employees have access to engaging, well-organized, and strategically aligned learning resources. Currently, existing eLearning content requires better curation, mapping, and design enhancements to maximize its effectiveness. Additionally, leaders need better tools to support employee learning, and the learning management system (LMS) requires improved documentation and administration guides. This project will address these challenges by introducing innovative instructional design methods, leveraging technology to modernize content, and implementing sustainable learning support tools. Rather than focusing on routine training updates, the intern will analyze existing materials, redesign them using interactive tools like Vyond, and develop structured learning plans that align with business goals. To execute this project successfully, expertise in instructional design, digital learning technologies, and content development is required, along with strong analytical and communication skills to ensure that learning materials are accessible, engaging, and effective.

Aiding Leak Detection in Pipelines Using System Identification – Year two

The ultimate goal of this project is to detect and localize leaks in pipelines in real time. Hifi Engineering has developed
distributed fiber optic sensors. Measurements are obtained at evenly spaced intervals along the pipeline (called
channels). This project aims to develop data processing tools to improve leak detection and localization. Many events
occur along a pipeline whose effects are registered by sensors (trucks driving by, compressors turning on, leaks).
Events are registered in many channels as sounds propagate down the pipeline. We aim to remove the component of
a channel signal caused by events occurring in neighboring channels. This results in a de-cluttered channel signal. We
do this by constructing a data-driven dynamic model of the pipeline acoustics, and use it to filter out events that
occurred in neighboring channels. Subsequently, Hifi Engineering will process the de-cluttered signal to classify each
event (i.e. was the event a truck, leak,…).

Development and Optomization of Scalable Immediate-Release Oral Solid Dosage Form for Early-Phase Clinical Trials

This research project will focus on developing a new version of an oral medication – such as tablets or capsule – that is stable, effective, and easy to manufacture. The goal is to design a formulation that works well in laboratory tests and can later be produced on a larger scale for use in early-stage clinical trials. The intern will work directly with scientists at Corealis Pharma, a Canadian company that helps pharmaceutical and biotech companies bring their medicines from the lab to the clinic.

By testing how the drug dissolves, how it reacts to different environments, and how well it holds together during production, the intern will help ensure that the formulation is ready for future testing in humans. This project will help Corealis meet growing demand from clients, stay at the forefront of pharmaceutical development, and continue delivering high-quality research and manufacturing solutions from within Canada.

Spectrum management in non-terrestrial network (NTN)-integrated IoT system

As IoT adoption grows, ensuring seamless connectivity across diverse environments is increasingly challenging. Many devices, such as sensors in farming, environmental monitoring, and disaster response, operate in remote areas where traditional networks are unavailable or insufficient. In such cases, NTN-integrated networks play a crucial role in providing connectivity. However, NTN communications require high transmission power, rapidly draining IoT device batteries. Beyond power constraints, coverage gaps remain a persistent issue, as NTN-integrated networks may still struggle to provide consistent and reliable service in certain regions due to environmental factors, network interference, or infrastructure limitations. Additionally, in busy urban environments where thousands of IoT devices are in operation, network congestion becomes a significant challenge, leading to slower speeds, increased interference, and unreliable connections.
