In-depth characterization of a 6 qubit quantum processor

Equal1 aims to democratize quantum computing by making it accessible and affordable with its innovative quantum silicon technology. By integrating the entire quantum computing system onto a single chip, Equal1 aims to significantly reduce the size and cost of quantum computers, transforming their performance and scalability. Our technology is based on silicon spin qubits integrated with classical control electronics using standard microelectronics foundry processes. Silicon spin qubits made in academic labs have already demonstrated key milestones including single and two qubit gates above the error correction threshold [1-2]. Fault tolerant quantum computing will require taking the technology to the next step by building similar devices in an industrial foundry process, unlocking the unlimited capability of the microelectronics industry for scaling. Recently, Equal1 unveiled Bell-1, the first-ever rack-mounted silicon quantum computer loaded with a 6 qubit quantum processor [3]. This project aims to perform an in-depth characterization of our 6 qubits QPU to give us more insight on its performance.

Assessing team functional state in emergency response

The need for better measurement of emergency response teams has been recognized as one of the key challenges that characterize the field of team work studies. Ideally, when assessing team performance, one should combine information about the nature of the team (e.g., what is the team structure?) and about its members (e.g., is one of the member exhausted?). This challenge is particularly hard to address in the context of emergency response, due to the inherent complexity and dynamism of the domain. For instance, how do you assess team member’s level of fatigue when deployed in the field? How do you integrate this information at higher level in order to assess team performance? The objective of the project is to develop and implement a model capable of online assessment of the capacity of the team to carry out its tasks. A better team assessment could, for instance, help organizations develop better training procedures or adapt resources allocation in real operational contexts

Intelligent Knowledge-based Digital Assistant for Enhancing Customer Service in a Fundraising Management Organization

Customer service operations in fundraising management organizations often face the challenge of handling large volumes of repetitive inquiries during high-demand periods such as festival seasons, raffle result announcements, and charity campaign launches. Traditional customer service support methods cause delayed responses due to limited staff availability, resulting in customer dissatisfaction. To address these challenges, we propose the integration of an AI-based digital assistant into an online fundraising management platform to streamline operations and enhance customer service for charity and non-profit organizations. The proposed work will leverage a combination of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and knowledge bases to support the development of an intelligent digital assistant. Specifically, this project explores the integration of Oracle Digital Assistant with Large Language Models (LLMs) to create a context-aware and human-like conversational agent capable of understanding complex user queries and retrieving relevant information. The proposed AI-based digital assistant will reduce operational burden on human agents by automating common queries and supporting the delivery of timely responses to improve customer service satisfaction.

Statistical advancements in the analysis of migratory movements using a novel broad-scale automated radio-telemetry array.

Partnerships among researchers and corporations are continually pushing the advancement of animal tracking technology, allowing smaller animals to be tracked for longer periods, over greater spatial scales, and at finer scale spatial resolutions. Yet the statistical analyses of these data is lagging behind. Using a novel, state-of-the-art network of 57 automated telemetry arrays distributed across southern Ontario, we will develop statistical methodologies to quantify the migratory movements of birds. We will first estimate error around the estimated location of individual detections, and then incorporate observation error into Bayesian state-space models to quantify effects of sex, age, species and environmental variability on the direction, speed, and habitat use of migratory birds. Working together with Bird Studies Canada and Lotek Wireless Inc, this project will generate new information and new methodologies to inform ecologically sound wildlife management, policy and regulatory decisions. For example, it could help to guide the placement of wind turbines to minimize disturbance to migratory animals. All analytical and online visualization tools developed will be open-source and freely-available, which could lead to more users and the continued development and broader application of Lotek’s coded tag technology.

Identification of Blood Biomarkers for Diagnosis of Peripheral Arterial Disease

Persons with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and healthy individuals will be recruited for a study to identify novel blood biomarkers for the diagnosis of PAD. Participants will be matched for age and sex. They will have their Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) measured. They will then be asked to return to the clinic within two days to provide a fasting blood sample. The intern will conduct a literature review regarding potential biomarkers for PAD diagnosis and become familiar with the diagnostic capabilities and equipment developed by Koven Technology Canada. They will learn about potential approaches for developing a diagnostic kit (based on a panel of biomarkers) from both technical and marketing points of view. The intern will confirm the inclusion and exclusion criteria to distinguish persons with PAD from those who are healthy, and they will assist with obtaining the clinical samples. This research will serve as the basis for a subsequent study involving a comparative analysis of the blood samples by metabolomics to identify potential biomarkers. The intern will assist with the necessary correlation analysis for selecting compounds capable of serving as blood biomarkers for PAD.

The impact of the physical and social environment on epigenetic modifications, telomere length and the development of breast cancer

Recent studies have shown that interactions between beings and the environment, including social practices and human behavior, have an impact on the susceptibility to develop chronic diseases such as cancer, through epigenetic modifications or telomere shortening. The term epigenetic applies to the modifications that regulate gene expression without modifying the DNA sequence. Furthermore, telomere is a repetitive region at the end of each chromosome to protect them against deterioration caused by aging, stress, environment, etc. The aim of this project is to determine how the chronic and acute stress interacts in our body increasing susceptibility to breast cancer. The psychosocial environment might influence the epigenetic modifications and/or telomere length, thereby increasing the risk of developing breast cancer. The main benefit for the partner organization is to increase the knowledge they have on breast cancer, mainly concerning the interactions between human beings and the environment, including social practices and human behavior.
