Retention of Bioactives in Haskap Berry Powder Produced by Refractance Window Drying

Haskap berries are a recent arrival to the North American market. They have extremely high levels of bioactive compounds that are associated with various health benefits including antioxidant activity and the reduction of many degenerative diseases. This research investigates the use of Refractance Window (RW) drying for the production of a high quality haskap powder for LaHave Forests Inc. Benefits to the company include an assessment of the bioactive quality of the powder throughout the manufacturing process and during various storage conditions. In addition, the potential use of the powder in beverages will be assessed and bioactivity determined. The results from this research will aid LaHave Forests Inc. in the development of new healthy haskap berry products.

La gamification : le pouvoir du jeu au service des organisations et des utilisateurs

Le mémoire porte sur la gamification, un nouveau terme qui désigne une pratique qui consiste à utiliser des éléments de jeu dans d’autres contextes que le jeu (ex: éducation, travail, applications web et mobile, etc.) dans le but d’engager et de motiver les utilisateurs à résoudre des problèmes et à atteindre des objectifs. L’objectif de ce mémoire est de comprendre comment la gamification se fait à travers diverses entreprises. Quels sont les principes fondamentaux et le processus de design au coeur d’une expérience gamifiée? Notre collaboration permettra de concentrer des efforts sur les projets qui sont en lien avec le design de formations gamifiées, donc qui utilisent des éléments de jeu pour atteindre les objectifs de formation. Le stagiaire contribuera à l’amélioration du processus de gamification des produits en ligne. De plus, le stage sera une occasion de tester ses connaissances en gamification par cette expérience et de les intégrer dans son mémoire. Finalement, il est à mentionner que le directeur de ce projet de recherche, Laurent Simon, est co-directeur du pôle MOSAIC et travaille depuis 15 ans sur le management et la stratégie dans l’industrie du jeu vidéo.

Energy Harvesting and Power Management Techniques for Hybrid-Powered Wearable Devices

Bigmotion Inc. was created to develop wearable health monitoring sensors and service the ‘at-home’ care segment of the elder care market. This project involves studying of existing literature and development of novel solutions for power management and energy harvesting for the product including tracking and fall detection systems using hybridpower. Analysis of proper control approaches for maximum power point tracking of flexible photovoltaic cells along with the integration of renewable energy harvesting system with the wireless-chargeable battery structure will be studied during this project. The energy harvesting systems will be used to utilize available solar energy to extend the lifetime of the battery, while wireless charging techniques improve the usability of the device by elderlies. The main barrier in system development is the size of the final product, which will be optimized through proper design. The results will be an efficient power electronic system to be in the hybrid-powered product.

Using Engaged Philosophical Inquiry in Drug Education – Year Two

Research has shown that “no use” drug education programs, with the objective of scaring or shaming youth into abstinence, have not been effective in addressing problematic substance use. The ineffectiveness of such scare tactic approaches has led program developers to focus on prevention and harm reduction associated with drug use, or in general, health literacy promotion. While significant ‘discussion-based’ drug education programs have been developed over the past decade and has encouraged students to be expressive and critical thinkers about their drug use ideas, their effective implementation has been a challenge. This project proposes using a ‘philosophical inquiry’ approach both as the content and means of professional development for teachers to help them develop skills related to effective techniques and tools, while simultaneously re-shaping the deep structures that operate on their attitudes and behaviours. The results will assist the partner organization to provide optimal prevention supports to help children and youth with substance misuse.

Optimization of Vertical Road Alignment Design

In the road construction process, a civil engineer commonly uses software to outline the horizontal and vertical road alignment on a topographical map. The software then calculates the amount of earth that needs to be excavated, or filled, at certain points of the alignment as well as pavement costs, land costs and other expenses. Our partner company provides such software. There is currently no commercial software that offers the user an automated optimization of the alignment based on the total cost. The few studies that investigate the optimization of both alignments simultaneously, do not guarantee optimal solutions. We will study a new model to optimize the vertical alignments with algorithms that will provide better results than existing solutions and provide a guaranteed optimal solution. The resulting implementation will interface with our industry partner road design software to accurately compute volumes and provide an accurate cost of building a vertical alignment.

Low cost and durable catalysts for automotive fuel cells – Year Two

The successful commercialization of the automotive fuel cell requires lowering costs of key components in the fuel cell stack, such as the catalyst materials at the centre of the electrochemical cell generating the energy. Nanoparticles of platinum supported on mesoporous carbons are typical materials being used for the current generation of the fuel cell stack. To meet the cost targets for commercialization we must be able to design catalysts that can increase their activity, be used more effectively, and last the lifetime of the fuel cell car. The proposed research will characterize the fuel cell catalyst using a variety of chemical, physical and spectroscopic analytical techniques to develop an understanding of how these characteristics influence fuel cell performance under different operating conditions and over time. This will improve our ability to design fuel cell catalysts that can meet the cost and durability targets for the next generation fuel cell car.

Herein we originally propose the utilization of those nanoparticles for a new lightassisted cancer therapy, that is, photogenerated · OH can lead to the DNA damage of of cells. Nanoparticles with surfaces that can be chemically tailored, exhibit a great advantage over the use of molecules in respect of target specificity and delineated in loco therapy; in this way, further increasing their enormous potential for medical applications. Therefore, the success of this project will benefit Pharmaster (our partner), which has been carrying out the R & D in the pharmaceutical molecules, to take its first step in the field of nanomedicine.

Investigating Social Network Models in Knowledge Building Teacher Communities

This proposed researched aims to examine online Knowledge Building Communities (KBC) for teacher professional development. KBC is a community, which is composed of a group of individuals working collaboratively to create collective knowledge rather than construction of a specific product or completion of a task. There is a commitment among the members of KBC to invest its resources in the collective pursuit of understanding (Hewitt, Brett, Scardamalia, Frecker, & Webb, 1995). In this research, I will focus on professional development in a KBC in order to define ideal conditions and constraints that constitute an optimal Knowledge Building professional development. In order to do this, I will examine a variety of network models of the participants and the ideas that are emerged in online KBC. Furthermore, the evolution of these models and the factors that affect the formation and evolution of them will be scrutinized. Accordingly, the results will be used to inform the development of the network models framework.
