Heated textile using screen-printing

Wearable devices are a promising technology for collecting and analyzing physiological and environmental data for various applications, including healthcare, sports and fitness, and occupational health and safety. In some settings, these wearable devices can also be integrated with actuation capabilities to interact with users.
The proposed research project focuses on applying wearable technologies to thermal comfort and regulation. This will be achieved through the design of heating gloves for Canadian workers in extreme cold environments, such as construction and mining. While protective gloves are essential in these environments, their bulkiness can be a drawback. They can limit dexterity and require a stronger grip, potentially contributing to carpal tunnel syndrome. Additionally, vibrations can exacerbate vibration-induced white finger, especially when hands are cold. By generating sufficient warmth, the gloves can be thinner, reducing the needed gripping force while still providing thermal comfort and regulation. The project will focus on designing and printing the heating element using screen-printed silver-based inks on textiles. A flexible PCB, developed in a concurrent research project, will control the heating element.
This research will contribute to the growing field of wearable and printed textile electronics and their application to occupational health and safety.

Our solution, AthleteAid is an mobile-app based service which compiles tried and tested medical decision rules and advice into a condensed, easy to follow step by step protocols. These protocols will alleviate stress and provide guidance for parents and coaches making decisions as well as reduce the amount of costly and unneccearry hospital trips. Using AthleteAid will also set Athletes on the pass of the most optimal and rapid recovery making their return to sports as safe as possible. With payment of a subscription fee teams will get access to an entire seasons worth of medical information and advice.

When a player gets injured, the designated team volunteer or parent will log on to our app and pick the injured area from an anatomy-labelled body. Our app will then ask a few baseline questions and based on their answers, will continuously lead them down a personalized string of questions. Finally, once we have a better understanding of their injury, we will provide them with a return to play decision, potential diagnosisis, immediate recommendations/suggestions to alleviate pain and reduce worsening of the injury, and a personalized rehabilitation plan.

research on 3D software user interface design

How to define user requirements accurately and design user interface appropriately have been a very active research area concerned with human-computer interaction and graphic design. Because of the scale and the complexity of three-dimensional (3D) animation software, making correct design decisions becomes tougher. Houdini is a 3D animation software as well as the main product of Side Effects. Using 3D animation software is always very challenge for users. It requires longer learning curves as well as interdisciplinary knowledge. With the increase of usage time, users become familiar with the functions and layout of Houdini and they turns out to be expert users. On the other hand, the apprentice users may carry experience from other 3D animation software or have no experience with any similar software. The conflicts between expert users and apprentice users emerge from the different requirements and expectation of Houdini. This research project will help Houdini to setup a standard design process including collecting data, extracting user requirements and making design decisions.

Cost-effectiveness of a synchronized care clinic for cardiometabolic therapies

Patients with type 2 diabetes are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, including stroke or heart failure. Newer medications can improve cardiometabolic health for patients with diabetes. But many clinicians are not yet comfortable prescribing these guideline-directed medications, and other clinicians are only comfortable after patients see several specialists. As a result, many patients do not receive guideline-directed medications, while others face long delays in beginning therapies. At the McGill University Health Centre, an innovative quickly and safely initiate guideline-directed therapies. In this new model, patients see three specialists at each appointment to efficiently adjust other medications and ensure safe initiation. In this project, we will use a simulation model to estimates outcomes for diabetes patients with and without guidelinedirected therapies. Using the model, we will estimate the clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness of this synchronized care model for patients with type 2 diabetes.
