Evaluating and learning from a mind-body medicine course: A mixed methods study (2)

This project learns from the experience of participants in an eight-week Mind-Body Medicine program (MBM). Mind-Body Medicine (MBM) teaches people how to help themselves by uncovering and engaging their inner resources and building resilience, broadly understood. The eight-week MBM program is delivered through the Iris Centre for Mindfulness, Peace and Healing in Fredericton. This research synthesizes the data gathered through previous Mitacs funded projects and focuses on knowledge mobilization through academic publication and presentations. The previous internships analyzed nearly 1000 course completion surveys and conduced individual and group interviews with participants, including participants who dropped out of the training. A public report was produced synthesizing the findings for a lay audience. This internship will focus on knowledge mobilization resulting in the production of at least one academic presentation and manuscript for peer review, with the intern as lead author on both. The research will support program development at the Iris Centre and contributing to the development of similar programs in the province of New Brunswick and nationally.

Tree responses to drought in the context of climate change

Extensive ecosystem changes are expected to be driven by decreasing water availability in the western boreal forest. Warming of 2° C since the 1950’s has already been linked to water stress and declining tree growth in
some regions and species. Tree rings are a valuable tool for tracking changes in forest growth over time, but sampling is often cost and time prohibitive. Our research will assess the impact of drought in Alberta boreal forest
using tree rings, as well as evaluate the use of satellite imagery as a complementary, low-cost measure of forest growth. We will also make recommendations to improve the AMBI sampling protocol for tree rings to facilitate
future forest growth research.

Affective mechanisms for interactive environments

The proposed internship, developed between the University of Waterloo and Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI), will develop and validate prototypes for novel expressive interactive sculpture environments. The work incorporates human perceptual studies and machine learning techniques for generating models for perception and generation of affective expression within experimental architecture and installations, and systematically deriving the relationship between affect and structure. Researchers will develop design methodology and control algorithms and will produce initial prototypes of mechanisms. The design process and prototypes developed will enable PBAI to integrate new technology within new environments capable of affective communication with installation visitors.

Optimization algorithms for improved transloading cargo operations in container terminals

This research project aims to make the process of moving cargo from trains to shipping containers more efficient. We’re going to create smart plans and ways to organize this process better, making sure the cargo is packed into containers in the best way possible. By doing this, we aim to reduce the time it takes to consolidate different types of cargo, minimize how much cargo is moved around, and make sure the containers are loaded in a way that’s most effective. This will be done in partnership with Ray-Mont Logistics, a company that deals with products like agricultural goods and chemicals, aiming to help them in their supply chain.

Brewing yeast development and production optimization

Yeast producers grow and distribute a wide variety of brewing yeasts to brewers to be used to make a wide selection of beers. These yeasts are commonly provided shipped as a wet slurry of yeast of a known number that brewers use to start the brewing process. Brewers demand high quality yeast to ensure efficient brewing and are always in search of novel yeasts with more desirable attributes and less undesirable ones. With this research we propose to optimize the growth process of a wide selection of yeasts to improve the yield and develop existing and novel yeasts with improved desirable traits and less undesirable traits. Overall, this project will increase production efficiency and increase the selection of yeast available from Escarpment Labs.

Towards Causal Deep Learning for Explainability, Robustness, and Extrapolation

In many applications, Machine Learning (ML) predictions are used to make downstream decisions. Acting on ML predictions however can change the distribution of features that the ML model relies on for predictions. The implication is that such downstream decisions procedures implicitly expect the ML model to generalize outside of the observational distribution. Unfortunately, this is often not the case, and ML models tend to be brittle outside of their training distribution. ML models will thus produce unreliable extrapolations, leading to poor downstream decisions based on wrong predictions.

Causal models, which aim to learn the structural causal models underlying the data generation process, are a natural fit for such use-cases. This is because causal mechanisms are more robust to superficial changes in the data distribution, and can be expected to extrapolate better to new environments. This project aims to combine deep learning and causal inference to develop causal forecasting models adapted to three important applications. Students will start by implementing existing approaches on three applications (demand forecasting, health prediction, and ML model understanding), before working on new techniques for causal ML in three directions.
