Fresnel holography for radio characterization of meteoroid fragmentation

The project aims to create a Python software that helps us better understand meteoroids, which are small celestial objects originating from comets and asteroids. This tool will analyze signals from radio meteor echoes, focusing on how meteoroids break apart when they enter Earth’s atmosphere, a phenomenon known as fragmentation. By comparing the software output with optical high-resolution images, we will make sure that our software is accurate and helps us properly interpret radio signals coming from both CMOR (Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar) and BRAMS (Belgian RAdio Meteor Stations). This project will benefit the University of Western Ontario, the University of Liège, and the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy as it will enhance our understanding of the strength and composition of meteoroids. In turn, this new knowledge will shed light on the distribution and evolution of dust particles in the Solar System. This project will also allow a better determination of meteoroid fluxes, an essential input for space operators to assess the risks that meteoroids pose to satellites, which play a crucial role in our globally connected society. Overall, this project will strengthen the collaboration between Canadian and Belgian researchers, creating a strong and unique international partnership in meteor science.

Mycelium biomass development for the production of meat alternatives

The overconsumption and overproduction of meat has led to an unbalanced and harmful relationship between the food industry and the environment. The Better Butchers have identified mycelium, mushroom root, as a great addition to current vegetarian proteins because of its high protein content, natural filamentous texture, and it can be grown easily in liquid culture. They have partnered with the Technology Access Centre in Bio- Innovation at La Cité College that has expertise and capacity in bioprocess optimization to realize innovative products to fill the gap in the current meat alternative market. This project will optimize biomass development of selected mycelium strains to produce meat alternatives assessed on yield, structure dimensions and density. The team is confident that the project will be successful and the cost of it will have a multiplied return of investment.

Fabrication and characterization of mixed matrix membranes toseparate greenhouse gases

Membrane separation processes have very low operating and maintenance costs in comparison to other separation technologies. The purpose of this project is to further develop the production of membranes that are suitable for capturing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. A membrane that is suitable for industrial applications is able to create a high purity product stream, and achieve this objective with the smallest possible amount of membrane. The membranes produced by the research team at Middle East Technical University are currently able to produce a high purity product stream, however, a large amount of membrane is required to do so. It is therefore proposed that the intern will collaborate with the research team at Middle East Technical University to further optimize their production process such that a high purity product can be produced with less membrane area

Sources, dispersion and fate of microplastics discharged in Strait of Georgia: Wastewater treatment plant effluent and combined sewer overflows in Metro Vancouver

This research aims to determine and study the sources of MPs in the SoG and identify the processes controlling MP dispersal within the MetroVancouver area. The majority of marine MPs are suspected to originate from and-based sources including
wastewater and stormwater/ road runoff. This project will assist in the identification and quantification of the various land-based pathways of MP release from MetroVancouver’s urban watershed through the measurement of the spatial and temporal
variations of MP concentrations and composition in the wastewater being discharged from the MetroVancouver region. This will be done through the collection and analysis of samples taken from the effluent of three wastewater treatment plants (Iona
Island, Annacis Island and Lions Gate), as well as from various combined sewer overflow (combination of stormwater runoff and untreated wastewater) locations within Metro Vancouver.

A Closed Loop Robotic Welding System Using Point Clouds and Drawing Data

This project addresses a flexible autonomous robotic welding system. Despite the advancements in robotic systems, there are still significant challenges in developing welding robots for industrial applications. Challenges such as accurately determining the weld seam coordinates, ensuring the electrode head remains at the correct distance from the weld seam, and mitigating high environmental noise have constrained the deployment of these systems to a limited range of activities, necessitating operator intervention during setup. In this project, an accurate approximation of the weld seam is achieved by integrating data from various sources, including point clouds from stationary cameras, point clouds from eye in hand camera, and drawing data. To maintain the correct electrode-to-weld distance during welding, adjustments are made within a closed-loop control system designed to regulate the welding arc’s impedance. The proposed framework is implemented within a simulation environment and subjected to evaluation.

Disaster Management and Informal Settlements in India

The most recent flood in Ahmedabad, India occurred in September 2013, when 50,000 people were displaced from low lying areas of the state. The World Bank report warns that the poor living in informal settlements, such as coastal slums in India, are the most likely to be killed or harmed by extreme weather linked to climate change. The purpose of this research is to understand the historical developments of post-disaster guidelines and disaster preparedness plans in urban slums of India. This study will analyze whether upgrades of physical and legal statuses, such as land ownership, of slum communities and homes can provide insight towards disaster preparedness plans and post-disaster guidelines. It will be the first to interview different stakeholder groups (governments, NGOs, and slum residents) to inquire whether slum upgrading strategies can be used as means of disaster-preparedness. Implications and lessons will be drawn for many emerging disaster-vulnerable cities around the world.
