Understanding Organizational Routine Evolution and Change in Healthcare: The case of CPOE Use at The Ottawa Hospital

The Ottawa Hospital is implementing a new information technology application system, or Clinical Provider Order Entry (CPOE) system. The students will model and study all aspects of the operational routines that are affected by the technology introduction and investigate how these routines evolve and change through simulation modeling. Examining the process of changing organizational routines is particularly important, not only because they are significantly related to the performance and survival of organizations, but also because routines represent the foundation of effective organizational performance. It is these changes, when optimized that can lead to cost savings and reduction in health care costs. Discovering how best to introduce such changes, and understanding the problems that can arise will provide lessons for other hospitals and organizations who want to implement similar disruptive technology.

A woman on the frontiers of existence: Judith Merril activism in 1970’s Toronto

Judith Merril was a renowned writer, critic and documentarist within the field of science fiction. While most of her writings have been connected to a variety of political movements, her Canadian years have been particularly engaged with anti-war and environmental issues. All throughout 1970, Judith Merril was an active advocate for peace and sought solution for environmental problems such as pollution, overpopulation and the risk of climate change, debating this problems on radio. Moreover, Merril argued for a science fiction aligned with the issues of its time, utilizing speculative imagination and futuristic narratives to debate current problems and how they affected women. Therefore, the present proposal aims to investigate Judith Merril’s activism during 1970’s Toronto, as well as the relationship between her work within the field of science fiction and her political engagement. Analyzing sources available in conversation with Gender Studies, Intellectual History and Literary Anthropology.

Investigation of CO2 phase behavior in flowlines for CCS processes

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is a practical solution for reducing the overall green house gas (GHG) emission and environmental footprint of the civilization. The CoFlow simulation software developed by CMG is one of the only tools available for predicting the performance of the CCS applications. Generally, there are technical challenges and prediction deficiencies associated with processes involving injection of high-pressure CO2. These include sudden phase changes effecting the pressure profiles in the process, vaporization of liquified CO2 causing solid formation which may result in significant risk. The objective of this process is to improve the flow and pressure prediction which enables the engineer to operate the process at optimized conditions while minimizing the hazards and potential downtimes.

Mitigating gas emissions from permafrost via the concrete-filled geosynthetic technology

The goal of this project is to assess the effectiveness of Concrete Canvas® in mitigating the radioactive radon gas exposure as well as methane infiltration into northern houses due to degrading permafrost. The outcomes of this research can provide northern communities with a relatively low-cost climate adaptation strategy to deal with toxic soil gas exposure in northern buildings. Radon is known to be the second most important cause of lung cancer after smoking. Smoking also exacerbates radon-acquired lung cancer rates by about 26 times while smoking is up to 4.4 times more prevalent in Arctic communities. Furthermore, the application of geosynthetic can provide the stakeholders with a promising technology to mitigate methane release from permafrost and landfills in local scales. The outcomes of this research project can enhance societal benefits in northern communities by improving public health
and housing.

Optical beamforming solutions for 6G

The project will develop a 6G silicon-based beamforming network incorporating optical technologies. Such a technology may increase the performance of the 6G wireless systems and to reduce the power consumption. The use of photonics to perform beamforming has a key advantage of wide instantaneous bandwidth with no beam squint problem. Since the signals are already modulated on an optical carrier, the use of photonics to perform beamforming will simplify the system since no additional electrical-to-optical conversion is needed.
